This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The costs of inadequate earthquake engineering are huge, especially for reinforced concrete buildings. This book presents the principles of earthquake-resistant structural engineering, and uses the latest tools and techniques to give practical design guidance to address single or multiple seismic performance levels. It presents an elegant, simple and theoretically coherent design framework. Required strength is determined on the basis of an estimated yield displacement and desired limits of system ductility and drift demands. A simple deterministic approach is presented along with its elaboration into a probabilistic treatment that allows for design to limit annual probabilities of failure. The design method allows the seismic force resisting system to be designed on the basis of elastic analysis results, while nonlinear analysis is used for performance verification. Detailing requirements of ACI 318 and Eurocode 8 are presented. Students will benefit from the coverage of seismology, structural dynamics, reinforced concrete, and capacity design approaches, which allows the book to be used as a foundation text in earthquake engineering.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of the material behavior of concrete under dynamic loads, especially impact and impuls, opens the volume. It is followed by a summary of the various analytical tools available to engineers interested in analyzing the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete members for dynamic load. These range from relatively simple and practice-oriented push-over analysis to sophisticated layered finite element models. Important design-related topics are discussed, with special emphasis on performance of concrete frames subjected to seismic loads. The significance of modern software systems is recognized by including extensive examples. For readers not current in dynamic analysis methods, an appendix contains a review of the mathematical methods most commonly used for such analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the dynamic behavior of reinforced/prestressed concrete structures, such as: buildings and bridges. It discusses how to predict or check the real inelastic behavior of concrete structures subjected to dynamic loads, including equipment loads, earthquake motions, seismic interactions and missile impacts. A number of techniques have recently been developed to assist in evaluating such occurrences. This book is intended to apply structural dynamics to concrete structures and is appropriate as a textbook for an introductory course in dynamic behavior of concrete structures at the upper-undergraduate or graduate level as well as for practicing engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While reinforced concrete structures depend on ductility for acceptable seismic performance, research on the material behavior of concrete and steel has indicated that the loss of ductility may occur under low temperatures. The current research program investigates the behavior of reinforced concrete column-type members under low temperatures ( -20 degrees Celsius, -30 degrees Celsius, and -40 degrees Celsius, approximately) and compares the results to an identical specimen tested at ambient laboratory temperature (23 degrees Celsius). The columns are lightly reinforced, and were loaded in a reversed cyclic manner while inside of an environmental chamber. The results of the experimentation indicate moderate increases in column strength as the temperature decreases, as well as moderate decreases in ultimate displacement capacity as the temperature decreases. The hysteretic damping properties of the columns were not significantly affected by low temperatures, and the specimen tested at -40 degrees Celsius exhibited a shortening of the extent of plasticity.

This book sets out to remedy this situation: it begins by presenting the most frequently used experimental techniques in the study of the dynamic behavior of concrete, then continues by examining seismicity and seismic behavior, soil behavior, models of concrete structures subject to seismic activity, seismic calculation methods of structures, and paraseismic engineering.
