Os livros são desdobramento de um curso internacional de especialização em qualidade em saúde e segurança do paciente, oferecido na modalidade a distância (EAD) no âmbito de uma parceria entre a Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz e a Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Especialistas brasileiros e portugueses produziram materiais didáticos para o curso, pois se verificou uma escassez de publicações sobre essas temáticas, sobretudo em língua portuguesa. Contudo, os materiais ganharam vida própria, independente do curso. Estruturadas de modo a suprir as reais necessidades de formação de médicos, enfermeiros, farmacêuticos, profissionais das tecnologias da saúde e gestores, as coletâneas têm por base conhecimentos e evidências que refletem o atual estado da arte em segurança do paciente.
