Book excerpt: Jack the Ripper is dead. This simple certainty may come as no surprise, since the prostitute killer raged in the Whitechapel slum in London more than 130 years ago. But it never became quiet around the first serial killer. And therefore the former investigator of the Scotland Yard, Frederick Abberline, came to look for the murderer of the women many years after his death. He is accompanied by a mysterious stranger who is pretending to know the true identity of Jack. Mark Roth adopted his analysis of Jack the Ripper, subtitled ambiguously as "Observation in nine Scenes", as a play. Frederick Abberline meets a stranger who knows suspiciously much about the murders in the East End of London. Together, the two dissimilar protagonists reopen the case, examine evidence, question suspects, and seeking for Jack. Some of the murder victims are interrogated, either. But this "Autopsy of a terrible allure" is far from being pure fiction. The evidences and case descriptions mirror the current level of Ripper research and refer to well-known authors such as Begg or Sugden. The perpetrators profile by the FBI of the 1980s is considered too. Roth succeeds in preserving the historical authenticity, as well as giving an outline of what happened in London in 1888. His dissolution of the Ripper's identity is consequently nothing entirely new - although it has never been told in this way before.

But after stumbling upon a critically injured yellow Lab, Fletcher unexpectedly finds a reason to live. He finds Jack. Fletcher and Jack are a team, and like the hundreds of other U.S. Military dogs and their handlers in Vietnam, they serve their country, saving countless lives. To the men, the dogs are heroes. But at the end of the war, the U.S. government announces that all the dogs serving in the war have been declared “surplus military equipment” and will not be transported home. Ordered to leave Jack behind, Fletcher refuses – and so begins the journey of two friends who will go to the ends of the earth to save each other. Based on the actual existence and abandonment of canine units in Vietnam, Finding Jack is more than just a story of man saves dog. It is a story of friendship and love, and a moving tribute to the forgotten heroes of a desperate war. And proof that sometimes it is dog that truly saves man.

His sex life makes him the hot topic for the high school gossip machine. But who cares? Like Jack always says, 'it could be worse'. He doesn't actually expect that to come true. But after Jack starts writing an online sex advice column, the mysterious love letters he's been getting take a turn for the creepy. Jack's secret admirer knows everything: where he's hanging out, who he's sleeping with, who his mum is dating. They claim they love Jack, but not his unashamedly queer lifestyle. They want him to curb his sexuality, or they'll force him. As the pressure mounts, Jack must unmask his stalker before their obsession becomes genuinely dangerous... Praise for Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts) 'The affirming, sex-positive, brilliant new book that puts the "adult" into young adult literature' Attitude 'Humane, sex-positive writing of the funniest, filthiest and most heartening kind' The Guardian

Here are the stories of fifteen people who confront death in their own ways and who find spiritual strength in their faith. This is also the story of a remarkable and gifted priest, one who has made ministry with the chronically ill a special focus of his pastoral life and has guided people not only through their dying but also to God. In this book, readers will find the inspiring stories of people who found hope and courage in life so that they could meet death. Readers will also glean insights into how they might approach their own deaths or care for others who are in the midst of making the last journey of life. This is a book that illuminates how to answer one of life's most important questions: How shall I die?

Book excerpt: 'One of the most important and compelling books I've ever read...If you want to understand why we are in this crisis, listen to the voices all too often airbrushed from the political conversation' Owen Jones Now We Have Your Attention makes sense of what is happening in British politics by taking a radically different perspective: the people's. From a warehouse in Manchester to a pub in Essex, from the outskirts of Glasgow to a racecourse in Durham, Jack Shenker uncovers the root causes of our current crisis and the future direction of British politics through the lives of ordinary individuals. Taking us deep into communities hollowed out by austerity and decades of economic disadvantage, among a generation crippled by precarious work and unaffordable housing, he shows where the chaos at Westminster ultimately springs from - and how disillusionment with it is fuelling a passionate engagement with politics of a completely different kind: local, personal, effective and utterly fearless. Joining a 'McStrike' protest on a roundabout in Cambridge and a gathering of the London Renters' Union in the aftermath of Grenfell, meeting hard-right bloggers in Newcastle and climate change protesters in Brighton, Shenker draws on exceptional access to campaign groups, activist movements and grassroots gatherings throughout the country - including unique access to Momentum, who have re-radicalised the Labour party from the outside in - to introduce us to the citizens and leaders of tomorrow: people who are changing things for themselves. Inspiring and terrifying in equal measure, Now We Have Your Attention uncovers a revolutionary transformation in attitudes and behaviour, and a future that will shape us all.

Miller leads his reader into a deeper understanding of the gospel and a life of humility, faith, and prayer. Miller gently challenges those called to serve as leaders to find their primary motivation in the glory of God alone. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Author Bio: Author David A. Kraft, a retired President of one of Simon & Shuster's largest business publishing divisions and an ex-columnist for the USNR, has lived through mergers, acquisitions and the horrors of downsizing for over 35 years. He has used this intimate knowledge of the corporate culture to write BigBro.com. Book Description: This is a story of high-level corporate greed. Jack Knox is Computer Security Director of ICCR, the world's largest computer service company, a multi-billion dollar operation that virtually controls the word-wide financial health of thousands of corporations. When profits dropped and growth rate sagged, ICCR, through its ruthless CEO, Martin Strange, mercilessly cut costs to satisfy Wall Street. Knox vigorously opposed the policy. He warned top management of the dangers ahead and was driven underground to fight for his beliefs. He used the only weapon at his disposal, control of ICCR's vast network of clients. He found himself all alone, pitted against the enormous power of the corporation, and soon against the whole country. Cornered, he resorted to financial blackmail. He anonymously threatened ICCR using the pseudonym of BigBro. Immediately his whole world fell apart as he was pulled into a web of intrigue, violence and notoriety. Using the power of the Internet, he hacked into client company files and brought the financial world to its knees. Knox became public enemy number one, sought by the police, FBI and the murderous agents of the savage Martin Strange. BigBro.com adeptly merges truth and fiction in one of the most enthralling cyber-thrillers of the year.

Book excerpt: Claims of Identity is a book of essays discussing relationships between archetypes and identities. Drawing on history, timeless tropes, and comparative literature, this book explores the activities of identification in a variety of ways, adding significance to representations of outsiders and the marginalized in order to appreciate authors and cultures with a view toward philosophy. A thematic treatise included in this volume -- "Claims of Identity in Bret Harte's Gabriel Conroy" -- argues that identity is claimed rather than inherently bestowed, and that this is contributive to California identity. The treatise also discusses Bret Harte, the original California author. Gabriel Conroy, Bret Harte's only long novel, published in 1875, tells a fiction of who "owns" California, symbolized as a silver mine in the Sierras. Various imposters are implicated. The result is a sweeping adventure that typifies Californian identity to this day, and compliments the understanding of additional topics.
