Book excerpt: Following the harrowing events of the Errand of Vengeance trilogy, tensions between the Federation and the Klingon Empire are the highest they have been for twenty-five years. Even as Federation Ambassador Robert Fox engages in tense negotiations with his Klingon counterpart to maintain the peace, Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise sees his vessel refitted from a ship of exploration to a ship of war. The impact of the coming conflict will be felt by many of the Enterprise crew - and by those on the other side. Amongst them is security supervisor Leslie Parrish, who is stunned to learn she is carrying her dead lover's child - and that he was a Klingon spy, surgically altered to pass as human and infiltrate Kirk's ship. Meanwhile Karel, the brother of the Klingon agent who was posing as John Anderson, faces a crisis of faith and conscience as he sees the Klingon Empire falling into dishonourable ruin… And Michael Fuller, whose son Sam was killed in a battle with Klingons, reenlists in Starfleet. But is he driven by loyalty or revenge?

Book excerpt: Set during the founding years of the Roman Empire, Zolia's Revenge is the story of two virginal Sabine sisters: Ronica the Revolter and Zolia the Crusader. Told by the older sister, Ronica, it is a gut-wrenching depiction of the Rape of the Sabine Women, their degradation and torture at the hands of King Romulus and the Roman men, and their eventual heroic escape. Marked by historical events that intermingle tragedy, love, romance, and unforgettable fantasy characters, this compelling story paves the way for Christianity in a world of non-believers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mind is where most of the battles in your life are won or lost. If the thought life is obedience to Christ, you can live a more spiritually fulfilled and successful life. In Controlling the Thought Life, author Barrington C. Hibbert helps you look at your negative thoughts in light of God’s word and discusses how to experience better outcomes in many areas of your life. Hibbert addresses the thought life from a biblical perspective rather than from a psychological one. While psychology provides many insights, and offers some solutions, it is inadequate to solve the human problem, for at the heart, humanity’s problem is the sin nature, which only God can fix. Controlling the Thought Life provides an inspired, straightforward, and easy-to-read discussion on an array of dysfunctional thoughts. It examines these chosen thoughts, applies God’s word to them, and encourages you to obey what Christ’s word has to say about them rather than letting these thoughts dominate you. Hibbert shows that you can be transformed by a renewed mind and can strengthen your walk with Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of signs in American literature and culture. It is mainly about electric signs, but also deals with non-electric signs and related phenomena, such as movie sets. The 'sign' is considered in both the architectural and semiotic senses of the word. It is argued that the drama and spectacle of the electric sign called attention to the semiotic implications of the 'sign.' In fiction, poetry, and commentary, the electric SIGN became a 'sign' of manifold meanings that this book explores: a sign of the city, a sign of America, a sign of the twentieth century, a sign of modernism, a sign of postmodernism, a sign of noir, a sign of naturalism, a sign of the beats, a sign of signs systems (the Bible to Broadway), a sign of tropes (the Great White way to the neon jungle), a sign of the writers themselves, a sign of the sign itself. If Moby Dick is the great American novel, then it is also the great American novel about signs, as the prologue maintains. The chapters that follow demonstrate that the sign is indeed a 'sign' of American literature. After the electric sign was invented, it influenced Stephen Crane to become a nightlight impressionist and Theodore Dreiser to make the 'fire sign' his metaphor for the city. An actual Broadway sign might have inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. In Manhattan Transfer and U.S.A., John Dos Passos portrayed America as just a spectacular sign. William Faulkner's electric signs are full of sound and fury signifying modernity. The Last Tycoon was a sign of Fitzgerald's decline. The signs of noir can be traced to Poe's 'The Man of the Crowd.' Absence flickers in the neons of Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles. The death of God haunts the neon wilderness of Nelson Algren. Hitler's 'empire' was an non-intentional parody of Nathanael West's California. The beats reinvented Times Square in their own image. Jack Kerouac's search for the center of Saturday night was a quest for transcendence. This book will interest readers who want to learn more about the city, the history of advertising, electric lighting, nightlife, architecture, and semiotics. In contrast to other cultural studies, however, Signs of the Signs is primarily a work of literary criticism. Lovers of literary light will appreciate this book the most.

Book excerpt: No-holds-barred political strategist Warren Kinsella’s colourful, no-holds-barred look at punk rock, and how it influenced him and millions of other kids to strive for nothing less than changing the world. Playing bass for Calgary punk-rock quartet the Hot Nasties might seem a strange way for one of Canada’s top political strategists to have spent his formative years, but in Fury’s Hour — Warren Kinsella’s exploration of punk’s history and heroes, its factions, failures and triumphs — he shares his unique view into a subculture that has long encouraged people to think big about the world. From early meetings with icons Joey Ramone and Joe Strummer, Kinsella has gone on to interview a who’s who of punk: Sex Pistols Johnny Rotten and Glen Matlock, Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye, Billy Idol, DOA’s Joey “Shithead” Keithly, Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz, Blink 182, Good Charlotte and many more. Since he was a teenager, Kinsella has challenged his heroes to put into words the true value of the music. How, after decades of co-optation by the record industry, neo-Nazis and misdirected radicals, are new generations continuing what he calls punk’s “search for the real”? In Fury’s Hour, with the iconoclasm and passion that have marked his career in politics, Warren Kinsella searches for the soul of a sound that invigorated the way he and millions of others have grown up — finding a way to turn anger into energy.

I'm a Theosian-a minor goddess. They call me Fury. Oath bound to Hecate, I was charged from birth to hunt down Abominations who come in off the World Tree and send them back to Pandoriam. In the wake of the second World Shift, Tam and I have spent eight years building UnderBarrow and Willow Wood into a thriving community. We’ve created an oasis of civilization, a safe haven in the vast sea of chaos left after Seattle fell. But as we settle into our new life, a terrifying danger is rising. Travelers through our territory are being attacked, viciously savaged and taken for food. There are no survivors and no witnesses, but rumors begin to circulate. One of the old gods has returned with a taste for blood. When the Frostlings report that lycanthropes are gathering under a strange banner, we know we’re in trouble. Whoever is at their helm is proving a ruthless, deadly enemy. As the attacks close in on Willow Wood, Hecate warns me that if we can’t stop them, all we’ve worked so hard to build will be destroyed. Book excerpt: Dorina Basarab is a dhampir—half-human, half-vampire. Subject to uncontrollable rages, most dhampirs live very short, very violent lives. But so far, Dory has managed to maintain her sanity by unleashing her anger on those demons and vampires who deserve killing... Dory is used to fighting hard and nasty. So when she wakes up in a strange scientific lab with a strange man standing over her, her first instinct is to take his head off. Luckily, the man is actually the master vampire Louis-Cesare, so he’s not an easy kill. It turns out that Dory had been working with a Vampire Senate task force on the smuggling of magical items and weaponry out of Faerie when she was captured and brought to the lab. But when Louis-Cesare rescues her, she has no memory of what happened to her. To find out what was done to her—and who is behind it—Dory will have to face off with fallen angels, the maddest of mad scientists, and a new breed of vampires that are far worse than undead…

Book excerpt: Christian has a touch decision to make; does he go for the mysterious girl that teases and eludes him, or for the bubbly blonde who’s near perfect in his eyes? Looking past their unique personalities and their incredible sex appeal that is so difficult for him to resist, his decision bears heavy burden because the girls in question are really a Valkyrie and a Harpy. The two races have been warring with each other for many millennia and Christian’s final choice will decide one of their fates for good. As if a love triangle with devastating consequences wasn’t enough, Christian also has to make a good impression his freshman year of college if he wants to have any chance of playing football next fall. While behaving like a good boy and dealing with two fantastical girls, he also has to come to terms with who his father is and, more importantly, what his father is. Mayhem, an immortal that previously held the title as The God of War, offers to help Christian on his journey to answer all of his questions. Mayhem’s help proves to be detrimental rather than beneficial and forces Christian to take matters into his own hands. It’s time for him to grow up and make up his mind; time is short.
