If it is well adapted, you have something valuable and can discard your old variety and go on improving the new one as long as you care to farm. BUY SEED CORN ON THE EAR. In buying seed corn, however, whether it be in your own state or any other, I want to warn you not to buy shelled corn. There are several reasons why you cannot afford to do this. In the first place, if you have ever stopped to think of it, you will know that the dealer who sells shelled corn, can sell ninety per cent of his crop for seed purposes, while the amount of ear corn he can sell for seed is only about ten per cent. You will note that in advertising, the breeders always put two prices on their corn, one price upon the ear corn and invariably a lower price upon the shelled corn, just for that reason. If you buy shelled corn, the man who sells that corn sorts it with a scoop shovel, shells it with a machine, runs it through a fanning mill and sends you what is left, and he can sell you kernels that come from a nubbin no longer than my finger. Suppose you want to test it. You take a handful, put it in the germinator and find that 60 or 70 per cent of it will grow. You are no better off than you were before you tested it. All you know is, that, if you plant it, you will probably get sixty to seventy per cent of a stand, but you cannot pick out the bad kernels. When you buy corn in the ear it invariably costs you more money, but you have the advantage of knowing that the man who sells it n1ust give you something near what he claims to or, if he does not, you will send it back.
