Meriwether is the original college-dropout whose adventures created a blueprint for generations of travelers from the hippies of the 1960s to today?s backpacking students. Book excerpt: Essays addressing relatively unknown or unexamined speeches delivered by famous or influential environmental figures. The written works of natures leading advocatesfrom Charles Sumner and John Muir to Rachel Carson and President Jimmy Carter, to name a fewhave been the subject of many texts, but their speeches remain relatively unknown or unexamined. Green Voices aims to redress this situation. After all, when it comes to the leaders, heroes, and activists of the environmental movement, their speeches formed part of the fertile earth from which uniquely American environmental expectations, assumptions, and norms germinated and grew. Despite having in common a definitively rhetorical focus, the contributions in this book reflect a variety of methods and approaches. Some concentrate on a single speaker and a single speech. Others look at several speeches. Some are historical in orientation, while others are more theoretical. In other words, this collection examines the broad sweep of US environmental history from the perspective of our most famous and influential environmental figures.

Book Synopsis Seeing Europe as a Traveler, Not a "Tourist" by : Dennis Glaser
Download or read book Seeing Europe as a Traveler, Not a "Tourist" written by Dennis Glaser and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-12-02 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Geezers Guide to Seeing Europe as a Traveler, Not a Tourist is precisely what the title implies. Based in a home he shared with a family in a small French village near Paris, Glaser traveled France, England, Austria, Hungary, Germany and Portugal. Not to just visit the many tourist attractions, but to meet and form relationships with the people who lived there. He mastered the art of traveling on buses and the continents high-speed trains and, in most cases, with no definite destination in mind. His objective was to know the people, and through them, learn the lessons their cultures had to teach him. Two trips to Tunisia, in North Africa, brought him into contact with the Arab world that tourists never have the opportunity or inclination to experience. Accounts of a trip on the Orient Express are mixed with reports on traveling to London by train through the chunnel. Often without a precise destination in mind and always without advance hotel reservations, Glaser was exposed to Europe in ways a tourist seldom would be able to experience its varied nations and cultures. For example, he visited the Normandy beachheads on the Fourth of July, and spent two weeks in a Portugal resort hotel primarily populated by German tourists. Drawing on an extensive catalog of pen pals, he often was exposed to life as it was actually lived and not just as described in a tourists guide book. And everywhere he met interesting people: a schoolteacher in France, an American traveler on the European leg of his around the world journey, a native of Brazil who had married a man from Poland, and was now living in Germany, a writer in England who was a rural farm child during World War II and grew up to become the first model for a famous cosmetics company founder. So, this is not your usual travel book. In it, youll meet people youd never expect to meet, and gain insights on life in other countries and other cultures. It is not a book that needs to be read cover to cover. Instead, just open to any chapterand enjoy!

The varied outlines of Sunium, on the one side, and gina on the other, were very clear, but in the deep shadows there was mystery enough to feed the burning impatience of seeing all in the light of common day... -from "On Arriving in Athens," by J.P. Book Synopsis Consuming Landscapes by : Thomas Zeller
Download or read book Consuming Landscapes written by Thomas Zeller and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What we see through our windshields reflects ideas about our national identity, consumerism, and infrastructure. For better or worse, windshields have become a major frame for viewing the nonhuman world. The view from the road is one of the main ways in which we experience our environments. These vistas are the result of deliberate historical forces, and humans have shaped them as they simultaneously sought to be transformed by them. In Consuming Landscapes, Thomas Zeller explores how what we see while driving reflects how we view our societies and ourselves, the role that consumerism plays in our infrastructure, and ideas about reshaping the environment in the twentieth century. Zeller breaks new ground by comparing the driving experience and the history of landscaped roads in the United States and Germany, two major automotive countries. He focuses specifically on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the United States and the German Alpine Road as case studies. When the automobile was still young, an early twentieth-century group of designers—landscape architects, civil engineers, and planners—sought to build scenic infrastructures, or roads that would immerse drivers in the landscapes that they were traversing. As more Americans and Europeans owned cars and drove them, however, they became less interested in enchanted views; safety became more important than beauty. Clashes between designers and drivers resulted in different visions of landscapes made for automobiles. As strange as it may seem to twenty-first-century readers, many professionals in the early twentieth century envisioned cars and roads, if properly managed, as saviors of the environment. Consuming Landscapes illustrates how the meaning of infrastructures changed as a result of use and consumption. Such changes indicate a deep ambivalence toward the automobile and roads, prompting the question: can cars and roads bring us closer to nature while deeply altering it at the same time?

Book excerpt: Revised with a new epilogue, “We the People,” this fifth edition of National Parks: TheAmerican Experience continues the highly engaging story of how Americans invented and expanded the concept of national parks. A prominent adviser to the Ken Burns Emmy Award-winning documentary, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea," Alfred Runte is renowned as the nation's leading historian on the meaning and management of these treasured lands. Further supported with period photographs and now twelve pages of color paintings, National Parks remains a stirring look into the lands that define America, from Yosemite and Yellowstone to wilderness Alaska. This is how we got our parks, and looking to the future, the challenges that remain in preserving them. Are “we the people” still up to the task? Yes, this history advises, but only if we consistently cherish the national unity that our commitment to the parks further demands.

This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2004, the fifth enlargement of the European Union saw the accession of eight Central and Eastern European states (the 'A8' countries of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia), with Cyprus and Malta joining at the same time. This was the largest expansion in the EU's history, adding ten member states and 75 million people. In January 2007, the accession of Bulgaria and Romania (the 'A2' countries) added a further 30 million people. The Committee's report examines the impact on UK business of the accession of the 'A8' and 'A2' countries, following on from two previous inquiries ("Industrial and Trade Relations with Central Europe", HCP 893, session 1997-98, (ISBN 9780105550785); and "Industrial and Trade Relations with the Baltic States", HCP 835, session 1999-2000 (ISBN 9780102524000)). The Committee's report concludes that the EU accession of these countries has been beneficial to the UK economy and business, chiefly through the plugging of gaps in the UK labour market as well as through increased opportunities for exports and investment. However, these benefits could be greater if businesses were better informed about the resulting opportunities, and the Government should consider what it can do to reduce the 'fear factor' of investing outside UK businesses' comfort zones, particularly in the new member states which are accessible to small and medium-sized companies. The Committee also highlights the importance of improving the skills base of the domestic workforce if UK business wishes to remain globally competitive.
