Download or read book Aeolian and Adhesion Morphodynamics and Phytoecology in Recent Coastal and Inland Sand and Snow Flats and Dunes from Mainly North Sea and Baltic Sea to Mars and Venus written by Detlef Mader and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1995 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outline of the aeolian and adhesion morphodynamics and phytoecology in recent coastal and inland sand and snow flats and dunes includes examples from the North Sea coast (Netherlands, Germany and Denmark), Baltic Sea coast (Germany, Poland, Russia and Lithuania), snow flats on ice plates covering frozen inland lakes (Germany), Great Sand Dunes aeolian dune field and Medano Creek sand flat (Colorado/USA), Red River sand flat (Texas and Oklahoma/USA); and Mars, Venus, Titan, Triton and other bodies in the solar system of planets and satellites. The actual geological, geomorphological and physical geographical study of modern dune fields and fluvial or marine sand flats permits also the comparative palaeoenvironmental interpretation of ancient dune fields and sand flats in fluvial basins in Buntsandstein (Lower Triassic), Rotliegend (Lower Permian) and Keuper (Upper Triassic). Lists of References, Key Words and Illustrations. More than 10,000 References.
Book Synopsis Sand and Sandstone by : F. J. Pettijohn
Download or read book Sand and Sandstone written by F. J. Pettijohn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition appeared fourteen years ago. Since then there have been significant advances in our science that warrant an updating and revision of Sand and Sandstone. The main framework of the first edition has been retained so that the reader can begin with the mineralogy and textural properties of sands and sandstones, progress through their organization and classification and their study as a body of rock, to consideration of their origin-prove nance, transportation, deposition, and lithification-and finally to their place in the stratigraphic column and the basin. The last decade has seen the rise of facies analysis based on a closer look at the stratigraphic record and the recognition of characteristic bed ding sequences that are the signatures of some geologic process-such as a prograding shallow-water delta or the migration of a point bar on an alluvial floodplain. The environment of sand deposition is more closely determined by its place in such depositional systems than by criteria based on textural characteristics-the "fingerprint" approach. Our revi sion reflects this change in thinking. As in the geological sciences as a whole, the concept of plate tectonics has required a rethinking of our older ideas about the origin and accumu lation of sediments-especially the nature of the sedimentary basins.

Book Synopsis The Geology of Fluvial Deposits by : Andrew D. Miall
Download or read book The Geology of Fluvial Deposits written by Andrew D. Miall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluvial deposits represent the preserved record of one of the major nonmarine environ ments. They accumulate in large and small intermontane valleys, in the broad valleys of trunk rivers, in the wedges of alluvial fans flanking areas of uplift, in the outwash plains fronting melting glaciers, and in coastal plains. The nature of alluvial assemblages - their lithofacies composition, vertical stratigraphic record, and architecture - reflect an inter play of many processes, from the wandering of individual channels across a floodplain, to the long-term effects of uplift and subsidence. Fluvial deposits are a sensitive indicator of tectonic processes, and also carry subtle signatures of the climate at the time of deposition. They are the hosts for many petroleum and mineral deposits. This book is about all these subjects. The first part of the book, following a historical introduction, constructs the strati graphic framework of fluvial deposits, step by step, starting with lithofacies, combining these into architectural elements and other facies associations, and then showing how these, in turn, combine to represent distinctive fluvial styles. Next, the discussion turns to problems of correlation and the building of large-scale stratigraphic frameworks. These basin-scale constructions form the basis for a discussion of causes and processes, including autogenic processes of channel shifting and cyclicity, and the larger questions of allogenic (tectonic, eustatic, and climatic) sedimentary controls and the development of our ideas about nonmarine sequence stratigraphy.
