The North American Monsoon is suggested as the forcing mechanism of deltaic progradational events of the Rio Grande River delta. Interpretations of reflection seismic profiles reveal that eustatic rise in sea-level from the Last Glacial Maximum to present is accompanied by several regressional events of the Rio Grande delta 5.5, 9.5, and 11.5 ka BP. Much of the migration of depositional facies within a delta system is forced by hinterland tectonics and base-level rise and fall. However, we suggest that the movement of facies within the Rio Grande delta system represent climate forcing as the most dominant influence on sediment deposition during this short time period. While dominance of climate influence is possible, the sensitivity of an increase in monsoon precipitation and its effect on sediment flux has not yet been tested. We test monsoonal effects using relationships between sediment flux, river discharge, and precipitation. Heavy water management and withdrawal and complexity of precipitation timing and events within the region make the relationship between precipitation and sediment flux difficult to quantify using modern data sources. Therefore, it is necessary to numerically simulate stream discharge to test potential sensitivities of the system to monsoonal precipitation using a stream discharge model. Precipitation input into the stream discharge model is gathered from a suite of climate model simulation outputs. Suspended sediment flux is derived from the outputs of the flow models using empirically derived sediment rating curves. Results of sediment modeling show that increased precipitation during the monsoon months of July-September, 6 ka BP increased monthly suspended sediment flux by 79 percent. The suite of climate models does not include 9 or 11 ka BP, but we suggest the monsoon may have been stronger during this time based on greater received insolation at these times. This study also shows that duration and intensity of monsoonal precipitation events can more greatly affect stream discharge and sediment flux than increased precipitation with constant storm intensity.

This is problematic in that it has created extensive flooding. The purpose of this study was to determine the erosion and transport potential of the sediments obstructing the flow of the Rio Grande by employing a unique Mobile High Shear Stress flume developed by Sandia's Carlsbad Programs Group for the US Army Corps of Engineers. The flume measures in-situ sediment erosion properties at shear stresses ranging from normal flow to flood conditions for a variable depth sediment core. The flume is in a self-contained trailer that can be placed on site in the field. Erosion rates and sediment grain size distributions were determined from sediment samples collected in and around the obstruction and were subsequently used to characterize the erosion potential of the sediments under investigation.

A preliminary review of water quality, bed sediment, and reservoir sediment-coring data in the watershed reveals a complex hydrological system, with varying potential sources of contamination. Within the lower portion of the watershed (defined as from the dams at Elephant Butte Reservoir in New Mexico and Red Bluff Reservoir in Texas co the Gulf of Mexico) arsenic, lead, and mercury appear at levels and/ or trends which may be of concern. Through the use of a geographic information system, this project evaluates the extent of contamination from selected toxic substances, identifies potential sources and/ or naturally-occurring conditions for the contribution of these toxic substances, and evaluates the potential for using Geographic Information Systems to model the watershed. The project uses data collected over the thirty year period from 1966 - 1996 by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission, the United States Geological Survey, the International Boundary and Water Commission, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The project utilizes water quality, bed sediment, sediment coring, land use, land cover, soils, water-quality permitting, precipitation, flow, and reservoir-release information to attempt to derive a model depicting the movement of sediment through the watershed. Because the United States federal government has not promulgated standards for sediment (as of 1998), the project references standards from both the State of Washington and Canada for screening of sediment quality.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled 'Sediment Flux through the Yellow River Sediment Routing System' Submitted by SHI Changxing for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2002 Sediment fluxes through riverine sediment routing systems are one of the main causes for many environmental problems and disasters, to which the effective solutions should be based on quantification of the sediment fluxes and clarification of related mechanisms. This study probed into the sediment fluxes through one of the largest riverine sediment routing systems in the world, the Yellow River sediment routing system, in a spatial detail of four basic functional cells and on time scales of 0 4 10 -10 years. Investigation of the sediment fluxes was carried out through construction of sediment budgets of the system mainly based on information derived from deposits in the sinks and records of sediment load, and through analyzing some important mechanisms for the characteristics of the constructed sediment fluxes in the system. The dry bulk densities of deposits in various depositional environments in the system were investigated for acquiring reliable sediment budgets from deposits. The sediment budget for about 10 years when the Diaokouhe lobe of the Yellow River delta was formed was 14.510 tones of sediment income distributed into the lower Yellow River, the delta, and the sea by proportions of 33%, 49%, and 18%, respectively. The high proportion of sediment deposition in the delta was associated with the high sediment-sequestering efficiency of the ephemeral sediment-charged hyperpycnal underflows off the river mouth and floods over the delta plain because these two processes tend to arrest all the incoming fine as well as coarse particles. A positive relation exists between the proportion of sediment deposited in the deltaic lobe and sediment discharge. The amount of sediment escaping from the delta displays an exponentially decreasing trend with the distance from the delta front. 11 The sediment budget for the period from 1855 to 1968 was 1.87810 tons of sediment income deposited in the lower reaches and the river delta by proportions of 62% and 32%, respectively. The larger proportion of sediment deposition in the lower reaches was associated with the nonexistence of dykes during the period from 1855 to 1875 and the frequent dyke breaching before 1949. It was found that the percentages of sediment deposition in the delta on two time scales are different because the expanding delta captures the sediments, which were deposited in front of the delta in the earlier periods. The total sediment yield from the source in the Holocene was found to be about 12 810 tons, which was the total mass of sediments accumulated in all the sinks of the system. Using radiocarbon dates in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, it was revealed 9 that the annual sediment yield on a 2500-year average increased from 0.6810 tons 9 in the first quarter to 1.0110 tons in the last quarter of the Holocene. Furthermore, it was disclosed that human activities enlarged the sediment yield by a total of about 12 0.310 tons over the past 2500 years and were the cause for the difference between 9 the measured sediment yield of 1.610 t/yr and the predicted natural sediment yield 9 of 0.9510 t/yr in the middle of the last century.
