Book Synopsis Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere: Distribution, Formation, Migration and Management by : Lu Qi
Download or read book Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere: Distribution, Formation, Migration and Management written by Lu Qi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of the book ‘Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere’ is sub-titled Characteristics, Dynamics and Provenance of Sand Dunes in the Northern Hemisphere. It brings together a vast body of information and insight into sand dune and desert systems from North Asia, Central Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. Chapters from the Russian Federation include studies on dune systems within the permafrost zone and there is a case study from temperate zone dune system in coastal Japan. Volume 2: Characteristics, Dynamics and Provenance of Sand Dunes in the Northern Hemisphere of 16 chapters in three Parts, focusses on Saharan Africa, Egypt, and Middle East and gives attention to sand mobility and encroachment with case studies from a number of countries where these matters are of concern. We also include chapters on the remote dunes in the permafrost zone and in the hyper-arid deserts of Iran. Case studies are used to highlight the characteristics of dunes and their interaction with humans in several widely divergent settings. Volume 2 concludes with some musing on the value of study of the past as key to the future and speculates on what the future might hold in the light of a warmer and drier Earth and a rise in sea level that threaten large tracts of low-lying land with marine incursions and destruction from storm surge. PART 4 Sand Mobility and Encroachment The seven chapters in this Part examine the real-world impact of sand encroachment and dune migration on people and their economic activities and the health, welfare and financial implications related to destruction of infrastructure, including human habitations. PART 5 Sand Dune Landscapes Distribution, Formation and Management Seven Case studies from several geographic regions in Africa, the Middle East, north-east Asia are presented here to demonstrate the underlying mechanisms in dune formation and the diverse approaches to their management. Human impacts such as sand mining, tourism development, combine with natural forces like climate variability to challenge the realization of an optimum management strategy. PART 6 Concluding Thoughts: Coping with an Unknown Future from a Little-known Past The two chapters in Part 6 have special roles. We are privileged to publish new research findings that are summarized here in Chapter 38 from extensive and detailed work conducted in the Kyzyl Kum, and Karakum sand seas of Central Asia. There is a strong belief that further study of the little-known past such as revealed in this study could unlock clues as to what a future Earth might look like. This leads on to speculation in Chapter 39 about the implications of what we already know about global change (not only climate change) and the impact of the Anthropocene on the dune systems, both inland and coastal. Sea level rise, marine incursions and an increase in extreme weather events will affect dune systems and sand seas on the Northern Hemisphere (and beyond).

Book Synopsis Sedimentology of Aqueous Systems by : Cristiano Poleto
Download or read book Sedimentology of Aqueous Systems written by Cristiano Poleto and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-02-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediments in aqueous systems are of increasing interest to academics, researchers, practitioners and stakeholders around the world. This book not only covers the characteristics of the sediments themselves, but also their physico-chemical impact on aquatic habitats and subsequent management implications. There is a strong focus on methods and instrumentation for collecting data and monitoring of environmental sediment quality and as a result, a wide range of environments are considered - from urban areas to freshwater estuaries and marine ecosystems. The chapters have been written by international specialists in the field, ensuring a good breadth of examples, experiences and case studies throughout. This book will appeal to a broad spectrum of interests from geographers, to engineers and environmental scientists, and at undergraduate to post graduate and academic researcher levels.
Book Synopsis River Sedimentation by : Silke Wieprecht
Download or read book River Sedimentation written by Silke Wieprecht and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment dynamics in fluvial systems is of great ecological, economic and human-health-related significance worldwide. Appropriate management strategies are therefore needed to limit maintenance costs as well as minimize potential hazards to the aquatic and adjacent environments. Human intervention, ranging from nutrient/pollutant release to physical modifications, has a large impact on sediment quantity and quality and thus on river morphology as well as on ecological functioning. Truly understanding sediment dynamics requires as a consequence a multidisciplinary approach.River Sedimentation contains the peer-reviewed scientific contributions presented at the 13th International Symposium on River Sedimentation (ISRS 2016, Stuttgart, Germany, 19-22 September 2016), and includes recent accomplishments in theoretical developments, numerical modelling, experimental laboratory work, field investigations and monitoring as well as management methodologies.
Book Synopsis Forest Ecosystems and Environments by : Takashi Kohyama
Download or read book Forest Ecosystems and Environments written by Takashi Kohyama and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-19 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal East and Southeast Asia are characterized by wet growing seasons, and species-rich forest ecosystems develop throughout the latitudinal and altitudinal gradients. In this region, the Global Change Impacts on Terrestrial Ecosystems in Monsoon Asia (TEMA) project was carried out as a unique contribution to the international project Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems. TEMA aimed to integrate forest ecosystem processes, from leaf physiology to meteorological budget and prediction of long-term change of vegetation composition and architecture through demographic processes. Special attention was given to watershed processes, where forest ecosystem metabolism affects the properties and biogeochemical budgets of freshwater ecosystems, and where rivers, wetlands, and lakes are subject to direct and indirect effects of environmental change. This volume presents the scaling-up concept for better understanding of ecosystem functioning.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Development and Planning III by : A. Kungolos
Download or read book Sustainable Development and Planning III written by A. Kungolos and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, in many countries there has been, an increase in spatial problems that has led to planning crisis. Planning problems often connected with uneven development, deterioration of the quality of urban life and destruction of the environment. The increase urbanisation of the world coupled with global issues of the environmental pollution, resource shortage and economic restructuring demand that we make our cities places worth living in. Problems of environmental management and planning are not restricted to urban areas. Environments such as rural areas, forests, coastal regions and mountains face their own problems that require urgent solutions in order to avoid irreversible damages. The use of modern technologies in planning gives us new potential to monitor and prevent environmental degradation. Effective strategies for management should consider planning and regional development, two closely related disciplines and emphasise the demand to handle these matters in an integrated way.Containing papers presented at the Third International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning, this book addresses the subjects of regional development in an integrated way as well as in accordance with the principles of sustainability. Notable topics include: Regional Planning; City Planning; Rural Development; Environmental Impact Assessment; Environmental Management; Environmental Legislation and Policy; Integrated Territorial and Environmental Risk Analysis; Ecosystems Analysis; Protection and Remediation; Social and Cultural Issues; Environmental Economics; Geo-Informatics; Urban Landscapes; Transportation; Waste Management and Resources Management.
