Book Synopsis Sectoral Approach to Training by : John Warmerdam
Download or read book Sectoral Approach to Training written by John Warmerdam and published by Cedefop. This book was released on 1998 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opportunities and limitations of a sectoral approach to training research and policy were examined through the commissioning and analysis of reports on trends and issues in five European countries: Belgium; France; Germany; Greece; and the Netherlands. Special attention was paid to the opportunities of sectoral initiatives for small and medium-size companies and the interconnectedness of training initiatives and the social dialogue between employer and employee associations. "Sector" was defined broadly as an economic and sociopolitical category. The prospects for a sectoral approach in training research were said to be favorable because the relevance of a sectoral approach will likely increase in the coming years as a result of a general trend to decentralize training. Practical opportunities for applying a sectoral approach to training research were found to differ strongly from country to country and from sector to sector within countries. After an examination of the possible roles of individual firms, company networks, professional associations, and regional-sectoral partnerships in formation and implementation of sectoral policies training, it was concluded that sectoral training policies should be connected and completed with training initiatives at the subsectoral and cross-sectoral levels. A conceptual model for analyzing sectoral training systems was proposed. (Contains 41 references.) (MN)

Book Synopsis A Sectoral Approach to Training in the Printing Industry and the Hospital Sector by : John Warmerdam
Download or read book A Sectoral Approach to Training in the Printing Industry and the Hospital Sector written by John Warmerdam and published by Centre. This book was released on 1998 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of sectoral training systems in two economic sectors--the printing industry and the sector of health care in hospitals--was examined in a study that entailed parallel research projects in five European countries: Belgium, Latvia, The Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The study was based on the assumption that the development of sectoral training systems entails four processes: articulation of sectoral (training) agencies and bodies; negotiation of training agreements; creation of training policies and provisions; and implementation of training policies and programs at the firm level. Sectoral training systems were generally more clearly developed in the printing sector. Printing sector training systems were highly developed in Norway, Belgium, and the Netherlands. In the United Kingdom, the established social partner-led training system that was broken down by the liberal government in the 1980s has recently been reconstructed through the conclusion of joint training agreements and the establishment of a joint training council. In all five countries, sectoral-level training was less articulated in the hospital sector. The research model was deemed a workable device for description and analysis of developments in the two sectors studied. (Contains 15 references) (MN)

Book Synopsis The Financing of Continuing Training in Denmark by : Birthe Hedegaard
Download or read book The Financing of Continuing Training in Denmark written by Birthe Hedegaard and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Denmark, suppliers of continuing training constitute the point at which the sources of finance meet the people who receive continuing training. On the basis of this close connection between training suppliers and the financial sources behind them, continuing training activities can be subdivided into these five categories: (1) continuing training activities supplied by public resources; (2) labor market training schemes; (3) training activities of industry and labor market organizations; (4) continuing training courses offered on the open market; and (5) in-house continuing training. For salaried employees (white-collar workers) and public employees, continuing training opportunities depend on the individual's job function and position and are very diverse. Generally, salaried employees in the private sector participate primarily in continuing training schemes financed mainly by their employers, through participants' fees. About 80 percent of public training schemes are financed through taxation. The continuing training of salaried employees in the public sector is financed predominantly through taxation by means of participants' fees paid to commercial course suppliers and professional associations. For the industrial sector, labor market training schemes are of paramount importance. The financial structure of labor market courses was initially tax-financed but is now fund-financed. Few firms have in-house training. (The 21-item bibliography is in Danish.) (YLB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Europe is certainly one of the richest and most educated areas of the world, some of the challenges faced by the old continent are staggering: low economic growth, structural difficulties in the labour market, and increasing international competition. Politicians and policymakers may advocate different means of overcoming the potential economic decline of Europe, but most agree that Europe needs to strengthen human capital, its ultimate competitive advantage in the world economy. This book looks at the accumulation of human capital from two perspectives, first through formal education and then professional training. It provides a useful summary of the key characteristics of education and training in Europe and also asks key questions about the fundamental problems with the current educational and training systems. More importantly, the book goes on to discuss which policies are necessary to make existing education and training systems more efficient, while also making higher skills available to a wider range of people.
