Download or read book Colloquies written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 1320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus' Familiar Colloquies grew from a small collection of phrases, sentences, and snatches of dialogue written in Paris about 1497 to help his private pupils improve their command of Latin. Twenty years later the material was published by Johann Froben (Basel 1518). It was an immediate success and was reprinted thirty times in the next four years. For the edition of March 1522 Erasmus began to add fully developed dialogues, and a book designed to improve boys' use of Latin (and their deportment) soon became a work of literature for adults, although it retained traces of its original purposes. The final Froben edition (March, 1533) had about sixty parts, most of them dialogues. It was in the last form that the Colloquies were read and enjoyed for four centuries. For modern readers it is one of the best introductions to European society of the Renaissance and Reformation periods, with lively descriptions of daily life and provocative discussions of political, religious, social, and literary topics, presented with Erasmus's characteristic wit and verve. Each colloquy has its own introduction and full explanatory, historical, and biographical notes. Volumes 39 and 40 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series - Two-volume set.

Book Synopsis Two Aristotelians of the Italian Renaissance by : Edward P. Mahoney
Download or read book Two Aristotelians of the Italian Renaissance written by Edward P. Mahoney and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the psychological, metaphysical and scientific ideas of two major and influential Aristotelian philosophers of the Italian Renaissance - Nicoletto Vernia (d. 1499) and Agostino Nifo (ca 1470-1538) - whose careers must be seen as inter-related. Both began by holding Averroes to be the true interpreter of Aristotle's thought, but were influenced by the work of humanists, such as Ermolao Barbaro, though to a different degree. Translations of the Greek commentators on Aristotle (Alexander of Aphrodisias, Themistius and Simplicius) provided them with new material and new ways of understanding Aristotle - Nifo even put himself to learning Greek - and led them to abandon Averroes, especially as regards his views on the soul and intellect. Nevertheless, both Vernia and Nifo engaged seriously with the thought of medieval scholars such as Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas and John of Jandun. Both also showed interest in their celebrated contemporary, Marsilio Ficino.

Book Synopsis The Kingdom of Darkness by : Dmitri Levitin
Download or read book The Kingdom of Darkness written by Dmitri Levitin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1500, speculative philosophy lay at the heart of European intellectual life; by 1700, its role was drastically diminished. The Kingdom of Darkness tells the story of this momentous transformation. Dmitri Levitin explores the structural factors behind this change: the emancipation of natural philosophy from metaphysics; theologians' growing preference for philology over philosophy; and a new conception of the limits of the human mind derived from historical and oriental scholarship, not least concerning China and Japan. In turn, he shows that the ideas of two of Europe's most famous thinkers, Pierre Bayle and Isaac Newton, were both the products of this transformation and catalysts for its success. Drawing on hundreds of sources in many languages, Levitin traces in unprecedented detail Bayle and Newton's conceptions of what Thomas Hobbes called The Kingdom of Darkness: a genealogical vision of how philosophy had corrupted the human mind. Both men sought to remedy this corruption, and their ideas helped lay the foundation for the system of knowledge that emerged in the eighteenth century.
Book Synopsis The Tradition of Medieval Logic and Speculative Grammer by : Fabienne Pironet
Download or read book The Tradition of Medieval Logic and Speculative Grammer written by Fabienne Pironet and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Vernunft, Kontingenz und Gott by : Philipp Stoellger
Download or read book Vernunft, Kontingenz und Gott written by Philipp Stoellger and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: Contingency confounds reason. If reason tries to reduce contingency, it will come up against its limitations. God on the other hand is more familiar with contingency, since contingency originates with him. If one thinks through the relationship between God and contingency, reason will also discover its contingency. Using modern approaches as examples, the authors of this work investigate the history of this unsolved problem.
