Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Salmon There are at least two respects in which the subject of Salmon is important, and two in which it is interesting. It is important commercially, the salmon fisheries forming ancient and valuable property, a large means of employ ment, and a very considerable supply of food somewhat less important as furnishing an old and keenly - relished sport, the privilege of exercising which has become a sort of property superadded to the value for purely commercial uses. It is interesting as involving some of the strangest facts, the most instructive experiments, and the most perplexing mysteries in natural history; and as having within these few years undergone inves tigation more searching and legislation more vigorous than for centuries before. The subject, too, is especially a British, or British and-lrish one - still more especially a Scottish one. The great majority of countries have by nature been cut off from direct interest and from any kind of power in the matter, and no country has an interest at once so great and so imperilled as our own; for upon few nations has the gift of the king of fish been conferred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secrets of the Salmon Of all kinds of fishing practised in all parts of the world, salmon fishing is still generally regarded as the most interesting. This sport is so ancient that a lore has grown up about it and customs and methods have become so fixed that it seems almost a sacrilege to change them, or to attempt anything in the way of innovation. Being an inventor by inheritance, nature, and profession, I happen to be one of those who have no regard for convention, or what others do, unless it appeals to my sense of what is right and reasonable for the result to be accomplished, and it was in this spirit that I approached salmon fishing. My object was to hook and play the fish on an artificial fly, no matter how it was accomplished and whether I followed the accepted customs or not. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern fly-fishing is only the latest chapter in a two-millennia saga of technological creativity and passionate observation of the natural world. In Fly-Fishing Secrets of the Ancients, historian-naturalist Paul Schullery explores the earlier chapters in that saga and unearths a host of provocative theories, techniques, and insights that helped shape the modern fly-fisher. Schullery demonstrates that whether we're looking for a good fish story, a clearer understanding of why we fish the way we do, or even a way to improve our own sport, we ignore our elders at our peril. Fly-Fishing Secrets of the Ancients offers the beginning fly-fisher an unprecedented opportunity to come to terms with some of the sport's most fundamental theoretical and practical challenges. It offers the expert fly-fisher a chance to test current angling dogma--and his or her own pet theories--against that of the sport's greatest past masters. And it offers all readers a fresh, probing, and often-humorous take on the great endless fish story we perpetuate and enrich every time we cast a fly.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-History and Habits of the Salmon, Sea-Trout, Trout, and Other Freshwater Fish Fish and their ways have at all times engaged the attention of the writer, and the outcome of these studies has been the production of this volume. Within its pages he has endeavoured to clear up many points relative to the history of salmon and trout which have until lately remained a mystery. So many unsatisfactory theories have been advanced, that he determined to take full advantage of his position as Manager of the Tay Salmon Fisheries Co., Ltd., and do all in his power to investigate and further our knowledge regarding this most interesting branch of Natural History. With this end in view, the marking of smolts on their way to the sea, and their recapture afterwards, have been extensively carried on, and their weight, date of capture, and the particular run to which they belonged, have been carefully recorded. Hitherto it was believed that salmon smolts returned as grilse the same year as they went down to the sea, but a study of the smolt does not bear this out. Again, the writer shows that the large Spring salmon, the small Spring salmon, and also the "Summer Run," are on their first return from the sea, and not from the kelt grilse as many supposed. Evidence is also given that the so-called salmon bull-trout is not a trout, but a true salmon which has spawned, and consequently has become altered in appearance and white in the flesh.
