Book excerpt: It was late on a Friday afternoon, but was that any excuse? Property Manager Maddie’s heart sinks when she realises that she has given Alex Isherwood the wrong keys to his rental cottage. It’s already dark and the weather is foul and promising to get worse. There’s no other option – she has to drive out to Seaspray Cottage and sort out this mess. Give him the keys – that was all she had to do. So how was it that an hour later, she was sitting in front of an open fire, minus her own clothes, and sharing a meal with a man who didn’t take ‘No’ for an answer? The tempest outside was nothing to the storm that was stirred up inside the cottage. With a shared history in the town, they had a few things in common, but didn’t know how much. It’s amazing how tightly held some secrets can be, even in a small town where everyone knows everything. Can it really be that they are related? Maddie’s world disintegrates as the secrets of her past are revealed.

Book excerpt: The lure of a town like Alice. The lives of three women were about to entangle in ways they never expected. Kathy Training as a pilot fulfilled a lifelong dream for Kathy, but others didn’t take her career choice as seriously. She wanted a chance to prove herself, but offers of work were thin on the ground, or came with conditions she didn’t want. She jumped at the chance of a contract flying role in Alice Springs, in the centre of Australia. Was it possible to be nervous and excited at the same time? A new life beckoned in flying for StationAir and she was determined to make the most of it. Sarah Life was mapped out for Sarah; keep working at StationAir, marry Dave, and perhaps eventually settle on the family pastoral property. For now, they loved the aviation community and it loved them. Then the bombshell dropped, and Dave’s diagnosis put all their plans in jeopardy. Sarah wasn’t fussed about the big wedding—she just wanted to be married to Dave. What were her chances? Melissa Melissa didn’t mix much with people in Alice Springs. Living on a remote station with her father, her opportunities were limited. She’d made most of her friends while attending boarding school and they all lived in Sydney. Reserved or aloof? The town couldn’t decide. It was easier for them just to ignore her. Her passion was photography, but that didn’t meet her father’s expectations. She had always known that one day she would marry neighbor, Alex Woodleigh, but for now the bright lights and the camera lens held greater sway. Meet the three women as their lives collide, and gravitate in unexpected directions. Each woman has influences on the lives and ambitions of the others.

That's where you'll find the biggest names in venture capital, including famed VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, where lawyer-turned-entrepreneur-turned-VC Scott Kupor serves as managing partner. Whether you're trying to get a new company off the ground or scale an existing business to the next level, you need to understand how VCs think. In Secrets of Sand Hill Road, Kupor explains exactly how VCs decide where and how much to invest, and how entrepreneurs can get the best possible deal and make the most of their relationships with VCs. Kupor explains, for instance: • Why most VCs typically invest in only one startup in a given business category. • Why the skill you need most when raising venture capital is the ability to tell a compelling story. • How to handle a "down round," when startups have to raise funds at a lower valuation than in the previous round. • What to do when VCs get too entangled in the day-to-day operations of the business. • Why you need to build relationships with potential acquirers long before you decide to sell. Filled with Kupor's firsthand experiences, insider advice, and practical takeaways, Secrets of Sand Hill Road is the guide every entrepreneur needs to turn their startup into the next unicorn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable feature of the collapse of the British Empire is that the British departed from almost every single one of their colonial territories invariably leaving behind a messy situation and an agenda of serious problems that in most cases still haunt those territories to this day. One such territory is the Southern British Cameroons. There, the British Government took the official view that the territory and its people were expendable. It opposed, for selfish economic reasons, sovereign statehood for the territory, in clear violation of the UN Charter and the norm of self-determination. It transferred the Southern Cameroons to a new colonial overlord and hurriedly left the territory. The British Governments bad faith, duplicity, deception, wheeling and dealing, and betrayal of the people of the Southern Cameroons is incredible and defies good sense. Ample evidence of this is provided by the declassified documents in this book. Among the material are treaties concluded by Britain with Southern Cameroons coastal Kings and Chiefs; and the boundary treaties of the Southern Cameroons, treaties defining the frontiers with Nigeria to the west and the frontier with Cameroun Republic to the east. The book contains documents that attest to the Southern Cameroons as a fully self-governing country, ready for sovereign statehood. These include debates in the Southern Cameroons House of Assembly; and the various Constitutions of the Southern Cameroons. The book also reproduces British declassified documents on the Southern Cameroons covering the three critical years from 1959 to 1961, documents which speak to the inglorious stewardship of Great Britain in the Southern Cameroons. This book removes lingering doubts in some quarters that the people of the Southern Cameroons were cheated of independence. Its contents are further evidence of their inalienable right and sacred duty to assert their independence. No one who reads this book can possibly be indifferent to the just struggle of the Southern Cameroons for sovereign statehood.

His gleaming vessel, Ocean Dream, carries not just his lifelong sailing ambitions, but the weight of a past he's left behind. Local fisherman's daughter Lily Jardine has salt water in her veins and cynicism in her heart. To her, Harley is just another city slicker playing sailor—more suited to a kiddie pool than the open seas. But as engine repairs stretch on, she discovers depths in the quiet stranger that makes her question her hasty judgment. As Sandy Bay's rustic charm begins to crack Harley's defensive shell, an unexpected connection sparks between two people from different social sets. Yet Harley knows he has no right to ask more of the free-spirited Lily. And she knows that dreamers who chase the horizon eventually sail away. Sometimes, the heart drops anchor when you least expect it—and the biggest adventures begin when you stop running from your past and finally find your way home. A tale of second chances, sea-swept romance, and discovering that love might just be the best navigation system of all.

Download or read book Secret Beaches of Greater Victoria written by Theo Dombrowski and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secret Beaches of Greater Victoria is a comprehensive review of nearly 100 beaches on the Saanich Peninsula and in the Greater Victoria area. While some of these are well used by people living nearby, many are virtually impossible to find without combing through official maps and back-road guides. Even the seemingly well-known shoreline from Oak Bay to Beacon Hill hides its own tiny pocket beaches and obscure coves. Just as important as finding these spots is knowing what to expect. Thus each location is accompanied by detailed information that any beach explorer should know before setting out. Is the beach a few level steps from a vehicle or down a high, steep bank? Is the beach suitable for children? Large groups? Kayakers? All of these questions and many more are answered in this book, which includes Theo’s hand-drawn maps, photographs and artwork. Take a few steps off a grassy area and enter a world of miniature reefs and islets (Lansdowne Road) Watch boats navigating Enterprise Channel from a hidden headland (Radcliffe Lane) Relax on an expanse of beautiful white sand (Gonzales Beach) Explore a beach where you can see low-tide critters like anemones, starfish and crabs (Beaufort Road, Sidney) Refresh your pleasure in the shore and head out to picnic, play, launch kayaks, watch winter storms or just enjoy the waves.
