Book excerpt: In this moving, funny and sometimes chilling book, leading Australians open their ASIO files and read what the state's security apparatus said about them. Writers from across the political spectrum including Mark Aarons, Phillip Adams, Nadia Wheatley, Michael Kirby, Peter Cundall, Gary Foley and Anne Summers confront – and in some cases reclaim – their pasts. Reflecting on the interpretations, observations and proclamations that anonymous officials make about your personal life is not easy. Yet we see outrage mixed with humour, not least as ASIO officers got basic information wrong a lot of the time, though many writers have to contend with personal betrayal. Some reflect on the way their political views have – or haven’t – changed. Meredith Burgmann and all those who were spied on have produced an extraordinary book where those being watched look right back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the convicts arriving in Van Diemen's Land' it must have felt as though they'd been sent to the very ends of the earth. In Tasmania's Convicts Alison Alexander tells the history of the men and women transported to what became one of Britain's most notorious convict colonies. Following the lives of dozens of convicts and their families' she uncovers stories of success' failure' and everything in between. While some suffered harsh conditions' most served their time and were freed' becoming ordinary and peaceful citizens. Yet over the decades' a terrible stigma became associated with the convicts' and they and the whole colony went to extraordinary lengths to hide it. The majority of Tasmanians today have convict ancestry' whether they know it or not. While the public stigma of its convict past has given way to a contemporary fascination with colonial history' Alison Alexander debates whether the convict past lingers deep in the psyche of white Tasmania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a philosophical history of Tasmania’s past and present with a particular focus on the double stories of genocide and modernity. On the one hand, proponents of modernisation have sought to close the past off from the present, concealing the demographic disaster behind less demanding historical narratives and politicised preoccupations such as convictism and environmentalism. The second story, meanwhile, is told by anyone, aboriginal or European, who has gone to the archive and found the genocidal horrors hidden there. This volume blends both stories. It describes the dual logics of genocide and modernity in Tasmania and suggests that Tasmanians will not become more realistic about the future until they can admit a full recognition of the colonial genocide that destroyed an entire civilisation, not much more than 200 years ago.

Book excerpt: The third International Workshop on Information Security was held at the U- versity of Wollongong, Australia. The conference was sponsored by the Centre for Computer Security Research, University of Wollongong. The main themes of the conference were the newly emerging issues of Information Security. Mul- media copyright protection and security aspects of e-commerce were two topics that clearly re?ect the focus of the conference. Protection of the copyright of electronic documents seems to be driven by strong practical demand from the industry for new, e cient and secure solutions. Although e-commerce is already booming, it has not reached its full potential in terms of new, e cient and secure e-commerce protocols with added properties. There were 63 papers submitted to the conference. The program committee accepted 23. Of those accepted, six papers were from Australia, ve from Japan, two each from Spain, Germany and the USA, and one each from Finland and Sweden. Four papers were co-authored by international teams from Canada and China, Korea and Australia, Taiwan and Australia, and Belgium, France and Germany, respectively. Final versions of the accepted papers were gathered using computing and other resources of the Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland. We are especially grateful to Jerzy Urbanowicz and Andrzej Pokrzywa for their help during preparation of the proceedings.

Book excerpt: Author of the bestselling Truganini, Cassandra Pybus has uncovered one of the darkest and best kept secrets in Australian colonial history. In the nineteenth century, collectors and museum curators in Europe were fascinated by the antipodean colony of Tasmania. They cultivated contacts in the colony who could supply them with exotic specimens, including skeletons of the thylacine and the platypus. But they were not just interested in animals and plants. The belief that the original people of the colony were an utterly unique race and facing possible extinction had the European scientific community scrambling for human exhibits. Many eminent colonial figures were involved in this clandestine trade, among them four colonial governors, several key politicians and even Lady Jane Franklin. In Britain, Sir Joseph Banks, the Duke of Newcastle and Professor Thomas Huxley were among many eminent men who solicited human specimens from the colony. Worse still, the men responsible for the care and protection of the few original people who had survived the ravages of disease and the infamous Black Wars were prominent in the trade. Cassandra Pybus has uncovered one of the darkest and most carefully hidden secrets in Australia's colonial history. It is time we all knew the truth. 'Truth-telling is every Australian's responsibility. Reading this book will help you to walk with us.' - Thomas Mayo 'A deeply ethical, and deeply disturbing, historical reckoning - a model of truth-telling for white Australians. In spell-binding prose, Cassandra Pybus reveals the continuing legacies of colonial dispossession ...' - Professor Warwick Anderson 'Exhaustively researched and arrestingly told' - Professor Mark McKenna
