Book excerpt: This study examined teachers' perceptions of the implementation of literacy instruction initiatives in secondary content classrooms. It explored the extent to which literacy training impacted the practice of middle and high school teachers and the reasons why they did or did not implement the literacy practices they learned. The differences between early literacy and adolescent literacy were presented, as well as overviews of three secondary literacy frameworks that support the adolescent literacy research including Reading Apprenticeship, Literacy Design Collaborative, and Penn Literacy Network. Professional development models, such as instructional coaching and professional learning communities, were described and change theory was examined. The study was conducted in two school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania. Middle and high school teachers from both districts, as well as teacher leaders from each district participated in the study. Content area teachers completed a survey, which provided information about literacy trainings in which they participated and how and why these literacy trainings impacted or did not impact their practice in the classroom. Interviews were conducted with teacher leaders to provide more information about the literacy training and ascertain their perceptions of implementation of the literacy initiatives. The results of this study demonstrated that teachers are more likely to implement new literacy frameworks if they understand the value of the initiative for their students. The findings also indicated that combinations of literacy initiatives correlated to greater levels of implementation, rather than a single initiative.

This research brief summarizes student and teacher outcomes, lessons learned, and other findings from an evaluation of the Alabama Reading Initiative at the secondary school level. Ten primary lessons learned are cited: (1) Be responsive to the different needs of secondary and elementary students and schools: a one-size-fits-all approach will not work; (2) Develop partnerships among teachers, administrators, and schools to create a coherent and well-defined K-12 continuum of reading instruction; (3) Provide secondary teachers and schools with consistent support from specialized staff; (4) Be attentive to local, state, and national policy environments related to reading; (5) Intensive Reading Programs should be available at the secondary level in addition to literacy across curriculum initiatives; (6) Ensure that there is centralized leadership at the beginning, but encourage and support the emergence of local leaders; (7) Coordinate support from district and state administrators; (8) Emphasize the importance of using explicit strategies for increasing comprehension and show how they can be applied in all content areas; (9) Identify students who are most at risk for continued reading difficulties and provide intervention as early as possible; and (10) Use data to inform instructional decisions. Conditions for initiative implementation, caveats, specific school examples and additional resources are included. (Contains 6 endnotes.) Book excerpt: What it really means to "read closely." What could Fern Arable, Jay Gatsby, and Winston Churchill possibly have in common? They all need masterful teachers to help students revel in their complexity. And Nancy Frey and Doug Fisher are just the two mentors to help you make that happen. Call it close reading, call it deep reading, call it analytic reading—call it what you like. The point is, it’s a level of understanding that students of any age can achieve with the right kind of instruction. In Rigorous Reading, Nancy and Doug articulate an instructional plan so clearly, and so squarely built on research, that teachers, schools, and districts need look no further. The 5 Access Points Toward Proficiency Purpose & Modeling: Teachers think aloud to demonstrate critical thinking and how good readers always know why they are reading. Close & Scaffolded Reading Instruction: Teachers engage students in repeated readings and discussions, with text-dependent questions, prompts, and cues to help students delve into an author’s ideas. Collaborative Conversations: Teachers orchestrate collaborative learning to get students in the habit of exercising their analytical thinking in the presence of their peers. An Independent Reading Staircase: Teachers artfully steer students to more challenging books, with strategic bursts of instruction and peer conferences to foster metacognitive awareness. Performance: Teachers offer feedback and assessments that help students demonstrate understanding of text in authentic ways and plan instruction based on student understanding. There’s more . . . Also included are illustrative classroom video clips available via QR codes along with an online Facilitator’s Guide with PowerPoints--making Rigorous Reading the only resource a teacher, school, or district needs to seriously stretch students’ capacity to read and comprehend text.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, interests in the cyclical nature of reading failure have increased, resulting in programs designed to address the needs of adolescent students. Among many programs for older struggling readers, READ 180 is a program widely used in urban schools that addresses the needs of older struggling students. The purpose of this study was to determine what, if any, teacher and administrator practices used in the READ 180 program best support the literacy learning of older struggling readers in an urban school district that is populated predominantly by African American students.Four research questions guided this study: (1) what are the relationships between selected demographic characteristics of READ 180 teachers and their students' approximate grade-level gain in reading? (2) What is the relationship between selected teachers' reported use of instructional practices and their students' approximate grade-level gain in reading? (3) What is the relationship between teachers' perceptions of READ 180's potential for students' literacy learning and their students' approximate grade-level gain in reading? And (4) What is the relationship between teachers' perceptions of administrative support and their students approximate grade-level gain in reading? The analysis of the data yielded four major findings. There was a statistically significant difference in the age and years of teaching experience in READ 180 of those teachers whose students scored at or above the district norms and those who scored below district norms. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups of teachers in their reported classroom practices, perceptions of the READ 180 programs' potential for improving students' literacy learning, or perceptions of administrative support. However, from the open-ended responses, two classroom practices were identified as most useful, small-group instruction and computer-assisted instruction, while independent reading and whole-group instruction were identified as least useful. The two strategies that were identified by teachers as most helpful and most needed for administrative staff were access to supplies as most helpful and scheduling and monitoring of students as most needed. The findings of the study led to implications for practicing teachers, administrators, and researchers.
