Book excerpt: The future expansion of urban areas is one of the most pervasive threats to the natural environment and the services it provides society. In this dissertation, the dynamics of stream macroinvertebrate community structure, secondary production and carbon-nitrogen-phosphorus stoichiometry along an urban development gradient in Louisville, KY are assessed. Chapter 1 provides a brief review of the effects of urbanization on stream ecosystems with an emphasis on macroinvertebrate communities. In Chapter 2, the effects of urbanization on macroinvertebrate and fish communities are assessed at 24 stream sites that drain catchments with varying degrees of urbanization in Louisville. The analysis revealed strong relationships between urbanization, in-stream disturbances induced by urbanization and both biotic communities. In chapter 3, the temporal variation in macroinvertebrate community structure of six streams in Louisville is assessed. From this analysis, it was apparent that temporal variation in macroinvertebrate taxon abundances throughout the year, which primarily resulted from taxon life history differences, can affect the interpretation of biotic indices used to assess the biological integrity of streams. In chapter 4, macroinvertebrate secondary production (i.e. the rate of macroinvertebrate biomass accumulation over time) we quantified at each of the six sites assessed in Chapter 3, and identifies possible regulatory factors of macroinvertebrate production along the urban gradient. In this analysis, macroinvertebrate secondary production was strongly associated with changes in the quantity and quality of food resources at each site. Finally, in chapter 5, macroinvertebrate production data (Chapter 4) are combined with the carbon-nitrogen-phosphorus body elemental contents of each macroinvertebrate taxon to determine how differences in macroinvertebrate community structure and secondary production at each site affect the flow of these vital elements through macroinvertebrate communities. Strong relationships we observed between phosphorus loading into streams, macroinvertebrate production, and the carbon-nitrogen-phosphorus stoichiometry of macroinvertebrate communities at each site. Overall, these results suggest that stream biodiversity is greatly reduced with increasing urbanization in Louisville. Moreover, in addition to losses of biodiversity, secondary production stoichiometric analyses, which are relatively unstudied phenomena in urban streams, indicate potential changes in the roles of these communities in the fundamental ecosystem processes of energy flow and nutrient cycling.

Book excerpt: The structure and composition of benthic macroinvertebrate communities can vary spatially and over time. Spatial and temporal variation along a stream has many implications for population and community dynamics, which may influence bioassessment programs. I examined variability in the benthic community of eight streams within the Polecat Creek, Virginia watershed. These streams vary in size from 1st to 4th order. The streams were sampled once every season for eleven years using standard bioassessment protocols. Macroinvertebrates were sampled from both sediment and submerged wood habitats at each site. The coefficient of variation (CV) was used to quantify among season, among year and among site variability of eight community metrics from both the sediment and wood samples. ANOVAs were calculated using Tukey post-hoc test to determine if there were statistically significant differences in taxonomic richness and mean CV values across seasons, years and sites for both sediment and wood samples. Sorenson's Quotient of Similarity was used to examine the extent of differences in the taxonomic composition of the macroinvertebrate communities among the four seasons over the 11 years of the study and among the 8 sampling sites. A high amount of variability was observed among seasons, sites and years. A wide range of CV values was observed among community metrics, with certain metrics exhibiting low overall mean CV values and others exhibiting very high overall mean CV values. It is important to understand the temporal and spatial variability of macroinvertebrates when planning biomonitoring programs.

Book excerpt: Disturbance is a dominant force in streams, and macroinvertebrates have adapted by using specialized strategies to reach refugia. Refugia include stable environments with abundant shelter and food resources. In the Missouri Ozarks, spring-fed tributaries are possible refugia. To determine if spring-fed tributaries serve as thermal refugia, submergent bidirectional movement was measured from spring-fed and surface-fed confluences in the Current River, Missouri during winter and summer. Macroinvertebrates were sampled to capture standing and bidirectional movement. Macroinvertebrate communities in summer significantly differed and formed three groups: surface-fed tributaries, Current River main channel, and spring-fed tributaries as supported by nonparametric analyses. Spring-fed tributary macroinvertebrate communities were distinct, which suggests these tributaries are unlikely thermal refugia for macroinvertebrates. Because greatest community differences existed between tributary types, mesohabitats were investigated. Mesohabitats differed in community composition and taxonomic richness within functional feeding groups with marginal vegetation having high taxonomic richness. Chironomidae among mesohabitats were analyzed because of their high diversity and density in streams. At the genus level, the inclusion of chironomids in analyses did not alter bioassessment metrics although chironomids alone were able to differentiate among mesohabitats reflecting differences found by the entire macroinvertebrate community. The most abundant chironomid taxa related best to nutrients and sediments. Further work with Chironomidae at the species level could improve environmental assessment and interpretation. The mesohabitat scale was able to differentiate among macroinvertebrate communities and should be further investigated in the Ozarks.
