Book excerpt: In order to make benchmark validations of the nuclear data for fusion related materials, absolute leakage neutron from various spherical sample piles were measured earlier at OKTAVIAN. A detailed analysis for Si cross-section is presented here. A leakage neutron spectrum from a Si spherical pile of 60-cm diameter was compared with the calculated results obtained using MCNP-4A with different neutron data libraries. For a detailed study, trial calculations were also performed using modified JENDL-3.2 data libraries. It was found that ENDF/B-VI (release 5) gives the best predictions and the three JENDL data files and EFF-2.4 can predict the measured spectra fairly well. The prediction with FENDL-1.0 file differs by a large extent from the measured spectrum. The discrepancy found in the JENDL, EFF and FENDL calculations are likely to be due to the too low discrete inelastic scattering cross section and too large continuum inelastic cross section values of these libraries, respectively.

Book excerpt: Neutron emission spectra induced by 14.6-MeV incident neutrons, retrieved from ENDF/B-V, are graphically compared with experimental data by Hermsdorf et al. and Clayeux and Voignier. The elements selected for the comparisons include Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Nb, W, and Pb. In addition to comparing the evaluated total neutron emission spectra with experimental data, individually evaluated spectra from contributing reactions are presented. Only a few of the evaluated spectra were found to agree well with the measured spectra, namely, those evaluations which utilized advanced nuclear model codes with precompound effects and competing binary and tertiary reactions. Recommendations for removing several defects in most evaluations are made. 3 figures.

Book excerpt: For ten days at the end of September, 1987, a group of about 75 scientists from 21 different countries gathered in a restored monastery on a 750 meter high piece of rock jutting out of the Mediterranean Sea to discuss the simulation of the transport of electrons and photons using Monte Carlo techniques. When we first had the idea for this meeting, Ralph Nelson, who had organized a previous course at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture, suggested that Erice would be the ideal place for such a meeting. Nahum, Nelson and Rogers became Co-Directors of the Course, with the help of Alessandro Rindi, the Director of the School of Radiation Damage and Protection, and Professor Antonino Zichichi, Director of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre. The course was an outstanding success, both scientifically and socially, and those at the meeting will carry the marks of having attended, both intellectually and on a personal level where many friendships were made. The scientific content of the course was at a very high caliber, both because of the hard work done by all the lecturers in preparing their lectures (e. g. , complete copies of each lecture were available at the beginning of the course) and because of the high quality of the "students", many of whom were accomplished experts in the field. The outstanding facilities of the Centre contributed greatly to the success. This volume contains the formal record of the course lectures.

Book excerpt: Parameters of neutron resonances are finding increasing interest, not only for scientific problems like the understanding of astrophysical processes but even more so for applications. For the construction and the safety of conventional nuclear reactors such data are essential and for new developments like the thorium-uranium cycle or for nuclear waste transmutation they are indispensible. Since the last publication of neutron resonance parameters at Landolt-Börnstein in 2004, the quality and precision of the data has been considerably improved, partly by the operation of new neutron spectrometers, e.g., the CERN time-of-flight facility recently put into operation and also by the use of new carefully designed neutron capture detectors. Volume I/24 contains neutron resonance parameters for the nuclear levels of 356 nuclei with Z ranging from 1 to 98 compiled by two eminent experts in the field. Again a considerable effort was made in comparing data from different sources in order to solve some previous discrepancies and establish 'best values', one of the main characteristics of Landoldt- Börnstein publications. In order to compare the data from different sources a comparison of the various experimental installations has been given. In view of the large amount of data the parameters for only the most important resonances are given in the printed version. However, the data for all resonances are available online at www.springerlink.com (DOI: 10.1007/978-3-540-87866-7). Neutron resonance parameters of many nuclei were previously published by Landolt-Börnstein in Volumes I/16B and I/16C.
