Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes as its subject the intensely private discussions that arise when ordinary people confront life and death choices and struggle with decisions in a world of medical and scientific complexity. Laurie Zoloth began her work in bioethics in a large public California hospital system, where she was part of a group tasked with the creation of an ethics committee in every hospital in the system, that would hear hundreds of cases every year, including pediatric cases from the hospital's intensive care, neonatal intensive care, burn, and oncology units. The book explores the dilemmas presented in these cases and reflects on the competing, often incommensurate moral appeals offered by the participants. It then analyzes the cases against and with similar concepts within Jewish thought, using rabbinic texts to make legible the factors at play as one makes ethical judgments. This philosophical position is feminist as it considers and at times advocates for the inclusion of family and community in the rationale of the clinical setting. Intertwined with legal statements in the Talmud are aggadot, or midrashic texts, literary narratives used to argue a point, or to complicate a point, or to deepen the meaning of the communal discourse, adding history, case studies, or fictive tales to the discussion. Zoloth argues that these texts can be usefully applied to problems in bioethics. She develops the case for a textual turn that is fully imagined and enriched by the many possible re-interpretations of narrative: biblical, rabbinic, medieval, modern, and post-modern.

Book excerpt: A unique insider's view of today's complex and often contentious world of medicine Anxious about the prognosis, lost in a blur of technical jargon, and fatigued from worry or pain, people who are ill are easily overwhelmed by treatment choices. Told through eight gripping clinical dramas, Second Opinions reveals the forces at play in making critical medical decisions. Dr. Jerome Groopman illuminates the world of medicine where knowledge is imperfect, no therapy is without risks, and no outcome is fully predictable. He portrays moments of astute diagnosis and misguided perception, of lifesaving triumphs and shattering failures. These real-life lessons prepare us to navigate the uncertain terrain of illness, and enable us to balance intuition and information, and thereby make the best possible decisions about our health and future.

Have you ever thought that very little work was being done for this huge sum? Or, have you ever thought that the entire process, whether buying, selling, or borrowing was something very like a racket? If so, then you are not alone. The Home Seller’s Second Opinion First is an insider’s look at, and a consumer’s way through, all of the horses**t that surrounds the buying, selling, and owning of a home. At one level the book is a simple how-to; the book teaches you how to negotiate a better contract with your Realtor®; the book teaches you how to analyze your loan; and the book teaches you how to analyze your local real estate market. At another level The Home Seller’s Second Opinion First is a rigorous analysis of the conflicts of interest that permeate the marketplace and hinder the American Dream. Here are the responses of a few of the people that have been taught the contents of the book. “It was easy! I fired my Realtors® and hired another one in less than an hour. You saved me $4000!” Pam. Colorado Springs, CO “First I wanted to punch you, then I wanted to hug you.” Susan. Los Angeles, CA “I think you saved our marriage.” Jennifer. Denver, CO In many aspects of our society, choice is merely illusory, and the consumer is only given fake options: The blue store or the orange store? This book gives the homeowner real choice by providing real information and real options available to the buying, selling, and owning public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last several years have seen a sharpening of debate in the United States regarding the problem of steadily increasing medical expenditures, as well as inflation in health care costs, a scarcity of health care resources, and a lack of access for a growing number of people in the national health care system. Some observers suggest that we in fact face two crises: the crisis of scarce resources and the crisis of inadequate language in the discourse of ethics for framing a response. Laurie Zoloth offers a bold claim: to renew our chances of achieving social justice, she argues, we must turn to the Jewish tradition. That tradition envisions an ethics of conversational encounter that is deeply social and profoundly public, as well as offering resources for recovering a language of community that addresses the issues raised by the health care allocation debate. Constructing her argument around a careful analysis of selected classic and postmodern Jewish texts and a thoughtful examination of the Oregon health care reform plan, Zoloth encourages a radical rethinking of what has become familiar ground in debates on social justice.

Book excerpt: Lucid and logical in structure, this new edition, previously entitled Sourcebook on Medical Law draws together a wide range of essential material, including extracts from statutes, cases and academic commentary from medical law; an area which is fast becoming an important part of undergraduate syllabuses.Fully updated to take account of recent developments in this dynamic area of law, it examines two major pieces of legislation: the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Human Tissue Act 2004 as well as a significant amount of new case law, including the House of Lords decisions in Chester v Afshar and Gregg v Scott and the Court of Appeal decision in R (on the application of Burke) v GMC and others.Divided into two parts, it covers:the general principles that permeate medical law, exploring illness and the ethics of care and healthcare in England and Wales and consent to treatment, confidentiality and medical malpracticeissues which arise in relation to specific areas of medical treatment, including infertility treatment and surrogacy, pregnancy and abortion, treating the incompetent, the mentally ill, medical research, organ transplants and euthanasia. This textbook is an invaluable reference tool for all those studying medical law as well as those studying medicine.
