Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook on the Economics of Manipulation in Sport by : Markus Breuer
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook on the Economics of Manipulation in Sport written by Markus Breuer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport has enjoyed steadily increasing prominence and economic importance since the Millennium. But threats to its integrity appear to have grown in parallel, undermining the very sense of innocence and fun which is an important part of its appeal. Threats to the spirit of sport come from internal, external and even state actors, who seek either to manipulate events on the field or to exploit the institutions of sport for their own ends. As the reputation of sport becomes more tarnished as a result, its sustainability as a significant part of the entertainment industry is called into question and loss of reputation may even result in decline in recreational play. In this wide-ranging collection of essays, the international team of contributors explores the structural economic sources of the problems that beset sport and address the question of ‘what is to be done?’ through economic reasoning. Specific topics covered include doping, match-fixing for betting or sporting gain, the role of forensic statistics in detecting nefarious activity, issues related to club ownership, corruption in the awarding of mega-events and within sports governing bodies, and the role of the law and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In the final chapter, the Editors pull together the various strands and propose that policy to mitigate the threat to fair play should be built around two themes: improving sports governance and designing incentives to help actors in sport choose honest over manipulative behaviour. The book will appeal to practitioners from sport management as well as to academics including students and researchers.

Download or read book The International Olympic Committee, Law, and Accountability written by Ryan Gauthier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olympic Games is unquestionably the largest and most important sporting event in the world. Yet who exactly is accountable for its successes and failures? This book examines the legitimacy and accountability of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This non-governmental organisation wields extraordinary power, but there is no democratic basis for its authority. This study questions the supremacy of the IOC, arguing that there is a significant accountability deficit. Investigating the conduct of the IOC from an international legal perspective, the book moves beyond a critique of the IOC to explore potential avenues for reform, means of improving democratic procedures and increasing accountability. If the Olympics are to continue to be our most celebrated sporting event, those who organise them must be answerable to the citizens that they can potentially harm as well as benefit. Full of original insights into the inner workings of the IOC, this book is essential reading for all those interested in the Olympics, sport policy, sport management, sport mega-events, and the law.

Book Synopsis Autonomy of Sport in Europe by : Jean-Loup Chappelet
Download or read book Autonomy of Sport in Europe written by Jean-Loup Chappelet and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the impact that successive court rulings have had on the organisation of the sports movement in the past 15 years, the autonomy of non-governmental sports organisations has become a highly topical concern in Europe. It is also closely related to the issue of governance, the subject of previous Council of Europe studies. The Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) decided to explore the concept of autonomy in greater depth by studying the conceptual, political, legal, economic and psycho-sociological aspects of the subject. This study was carried out at the request of the EPAS by the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP) on the basis of a questionnaire sent to public authorities in charge of sport and to national and international umbrella sports organisations. In addition to an analysis of the data obtained, documents produced by public authorities and sports organisations on this emerging issue are presented. This study contributes to a better understanding of the concept of autonomy and offers a clear picture of the issues involved.

Book excerpt: The Evaluation Commission Report is presented in three parts: a video, a written report and a series of annexes. The video describes the value proposition of the two candidatures and highlights key features of each proposal. The written report provides an assessment of essential elements for planning and delivering successful Games, grouped within four broad categories: Games concept, Games experience, sustainability and legacy and Games delivery. Unless otherwise noted, all assessments in the report apply to both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games. A section on the Paralympic Games covers issues not addressed in the rest of the report. In keeping with Olympic Agenda 2020, this assessment identifies opportunities and challenges in each city. In many cases, there are few or no challenges - this is primarily because the three-stage process encouraged adjustments that resolved potential challenges before the report was finalised. The report and the video complement each other. The annexes include photographs of and key information on proposed competition and non-competition venues in each candidate city, as well as additional details on a wide range of issues that the Evaluation Commission considered. This section of the report provides reference material for IOC members and other interested individuals who want more detail on a particular aspect of the candidature or want to see technical data on the wide range of issues considered by the Commission.
