Book excerpt: Numerical modeling of turbulent flows needs to be accurate yet fast and cost effective for practical applications. For flows with boundary layer separation the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method provides accurate results but the computational cost increases fast with the Reynolds number due to the near wall resolution requirement. To alleviate the cost burden, a statistical (RANS) method can be incorporated in a LES method to build a hybrid model, which applies RANS in the near wall attached flow region (to reduce cost) and LES in the separated flow region (to increase accuracy). In this work, a novel second-moment closure based hybrid RANS-LES model is used to improve the overall accuracy. The new hybrid model coefficients are calibrated in a canonical attached flow and the model is then applied in several other attached and separated turbulent flow cases to evaluate the model performance.Y

Book excerpt: Abstract The goal of the present research is to develop and assess multiscale and hybrid turbulence models in simulation of separated turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers in terms of grid refinement and CPU resources required for a certain level of spectral resolution of the separated flow. These investigated multiscale turbulence models include the DES (Detached Eddy Simulation), hybrid RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes) /LES (Large Eddy Simulation) and PANS (Partially Averaged Navier-Stokes) closure models. These techniques adapt a turbulence model, that function as a RANS model in regions where the grids are highly stretched and the high Reynolds number boundary layer is attached, to function as a sub-grid scale LES type model where the grid is nearly isotropic in the separated flow regions. This accomplished by reducing the turbulence eddy viscosity to promote resolution of more turbulence scales in these regions while still reverting to the original RANS behavior in attached flow and near wall regions. The sensitivity of the computed results to multiscale closure model parameters are compared for three developed formulations of the DES model, one variant of hybrid RANS/LES model, a proposed adaptation of the PANS model and the original multiscale SST-DES model for a number of problems involving unsteady separated high Reynolds number flow. The flow configurations include transonic flow over open cavity, subsonic flow over a back facing step and flow over wall-mounted hump. Simulation predictions are compared with experimental data and also equivalent LES simulations. Simulated results show that these models perform better when there is a distinct demarcation between the attached and separated regions and unsteady shear layers dominate the flow. Computed results show that multiscale methods based on the modification of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate provide the most accurate results and the computed results for the unsteady spectra amplitude and frequency are significantly influenced by the model parameters and the grids. These models provide a useful tool for predicting complex 3-D separated unsteady flows over an expansive dynamic range at high Reynolds number and are comparable to LES predictions at (1/6)th - (1/10)th the corresponding LES CPU resources.

Book excerpt: A dynamic hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling framework has been investigated and further developed to improve the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) prediction of turbulent flow features along with laminar-to-turbulent transitional phenomena. In recent years, the use of hybrid RANS/LES (HRL) models has become more common in CFD simulations, since HRL models offer more accuracy than RANS in regions of flow separation at a reduced cost relative to LES in attached boundary layers. The first part of this research includes evaluation and validation of a dynamic HRL (DHRL) model that aims to address issues regarding the RANS-to-LES zonal transition and explicit grid dependence, both of which are inherent to most current HRL models. Simulations of two test cases—flow over a backward facing step and flow over a wing with leading-edge ice accretion—were performed to assess the potential of the DHRL model for predicting turbulent features involved in mainly unsteady separated flow. The DHRL simulation results are compared with experimental data, along with the computational results for other HRL and RANS models. In summary, these comparisons demonstrate that the DHRL framework does address many of the weaknesses inherent in most current HRL models. Although HRL models are widely used in turbulent flow simulations, they have limitations for transitional flow predictions. Most HRL models include a fully turbulent RANS component for attached boundary layer regions. The small number of HRL models that do include transition-sensitive RANS models have issues related to the RANS model itself and to the zonal transition between RANS and LES. In order to address those issues, a new transition-sensitive HRL modeling methodology has been developed that includes the DHRL methodology and a physics-based transition-sensitive RANS model. The feasibility of the transition-sensitive dynamic HRL (TDHRL) model has been investigated by performing numerical simulations of the flows over a circular cylinder and a PAK-B airfoil. Comparisons with experimental data along with computational results from other HRL and RANS models illustrate the potential of TDHRL model for accurately capturing the physics of complex transitional flow phenomena.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to evaluate a recently proposed dynamic hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling framework that seeks to effectively address issues regarding RANS-to-LES transition and explicit grid dependence inherent in most current hybrid RANS-LES (HRL) models. RANS-to-LES transition in the investigated dynamic HRL (DHRL) model is based on the physical concept of maintaining continuity of total turbulence production using two rigorously separated turbulent stress parameters, where one is obtained from the RANS model and the other from the LES model. Computations of two canonical test cases-two-dimensional turbulent channel flow and backward facing step flow-were performed to assess the potential of the DHRL model for predicting both attached and separated turbulent flows. This investigation attempts to evaluate the ability of the DHRL method to reproduce the detailed physics of attached and separated turbulent flows, as well as to resolve the issues concerning log-layer mismatch and delayed break down of separated shear layers. The DHRL model simulation results are compared with experimental and DNS data, along with the computational results for other HRL and RANS models. In summary, these comparisons demonstrate that the DHRL framework does address many of the weaknesses inherent in most current HRL models.

Modeling and prediction of such statistically unsteady flows are important in many practical AFOSR applications: turbine flows, wake-flows with vortex shedding, etc. Further, many flow control strategies depend upon the knowledge of unsteady turbulence dynamics to achieve the desired objectives. However, our understanding of unsteadily-forced turbulence dynamics or our ability to predict them is inadequate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have demonstrated the applicability of synthetic turbulence coupled with the controlled-forcing method to generate eddies at the interface between RANS and LES in hybrid calculations. We obtained shorter transition regions and improved model accuracy. Realistic turbulence can be generated within 5 boundary-layer thicknesses of the RANS/LES interface even in cases in which the data supplied by the RANS is inaccurate, or the assumptions on which the forcing is based are invalid. We applied this technique in a variety of turbulent flows with uniformly good results. A single-block hybrid calculation was performed in a geometry that, although simple, presented several difficulties. We demonstrated that unless turbulent eddies are artificially generated at the RANS/LES interface, very significant errors appear in the flow statistics even at low order (skin-friction coefficient, mean velocity profile). Establishing realistic turbulent eddies capable to transport momentum, energy and mass, appears to be a critical factor for the accurate prediction of shallow separation by hybrid RANS/LES methods.
