Book excerpt: Second harmonic generation and sum frequency generation are increasingly being used as in situ surface probes. These techniques are coherent and inherently surface sensitive by the nature of the mediums response to intense laser light. Here we will review these two techniques using aqueous corrosion as an example problem. Aqueous corrosion of technologically important materials such as Fe, Ni and Cr proceeds from a reduced metal surface with layer by layer growth of oxide films mitigated by compositional changes in the chemical makeup of the growing film. Passivation of the metal surface is achieved after growth of only a few tens of atomic layers of metal oxide. Surface Second Harmonic Generation and a related nonlinear laser technique, Sum Frequency Generation have demonstrated an ability to probe the surface composition of growing films even in the presence of aqueous solutions. 96 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: The Fourth USA-USSR Symposium. on The Physics of Optical Phenomena and Their Use as Probes of Matter, was held in Irvine, California, January 23-27, 1990. Participating in the Symposium were 22 scientists from the USSR and 29 from the USA. In addition, to provide an international dimension to this Symposium without, however, compromising significantly its essentially binational character, 7 non-US and non-USSR scientists were invited to take part in it. The present volume is the proceedings of that Symposium, and contains all manuscripts received prior to August 1, 1990, representing. scientific contributions presented. A few manuscripts were not received, but for completeness the corresponding abstract is printed.. Three previous USA/USSR Binational Symposia on related topics have been held, viz. "Theory of Light Scattering in Condensed Matter" (Moscow, 1975), "Light Scattering in Solids" (New York, 1979), and "Laser Optics of Condensed Matter" (Leningrad, 1987). These meetings were evaluated by the participants as highly successful and provided invaluable oppor tunities for researchers to exchange information and to initiate colla borative work which led to research visits by US physicist to Soviet laboratories, and vice versa, and which continue to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second harmonic generation (SHG) has now been well established as a versatile surface-sensitive probe. It has been used to study electrochemical processes at electrode surfaces, molecular adsorption and desorption at metal and semiconductor surfaces, orientational phase transition of molecular monolayers on water, surface reconstruction and epitaxial growth, and so on. More recently, it has been employed as a tool to monitor monolayer polymerization and other surface reactions, to probe polar order of molecules at interfaces, and to measure molecular nonlinearity. While most surface techniques are restricted to the solid/vacuum environment, SHG is applicable to nearly all interfaces as long as the interfaces are accessible by light. In addition, SHG has the advantages of being capable of in-situ measurements with high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, optical properties of the unique atomic and molecular structures of materials have drawn great scientific interest. Linear optical properties of materials such as metals, metal oxides, magnetic oxides, and organic materials are based on energy transfer and find applications in wastewater treatment, forensic science, biomedical science, photovoltaics, nuclear technology, and LED displays. Nonlinear optical properties of materials are based on the nonlinear medium and find more advanced applications in frequency mixing generations and optical parametric oscillations. This book presents the underlying principles, implementation, and applications of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of materials and has been divided into two parts emphasizing these properties. The first part of the book, Linear Optics, discusses bimetallic nanoparticles in dielectric media and their integration to dye molecules to detect trace amounts of heavy metals at the nanometer level, as well as to enhance luminescence and image contrasts in forensic inspection and biomedical diagnosis. It shows how the integration of bimetallic nanoparticles into a ZnO matrix promotes broadening of the absorption spectrum from the ultraviolet to the visible wavelength. It explains the role of surface adsorption and photocatalytic degradation in dye-removal kinetics by Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles under pulsed white light. It also discusses the double-layer shielding tank design to safely store radioactive waste and photon propagation through the multilayer structures of a human tissue model. The second part of the book, Nonlinear Optics, presents general concepts such as electromagnetic theory, nonlinear medium, and wave propagation, as well as more advanced concepts such as second harmonic generation, phase matching, optical parametric interactions, different frequency generation, sum frequency generation, tunable laser, and optical resonant oscillator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Nonlinear Optics encompasses a broad spectrum of nonlinear phenomena from second-harmonic generation to soliton formation. The wide use of nonlinear optical phenomena in laboratories and commercial devices requires familiarity with the underlying physics as well as practical device considerations. This text adopts a combined approach to analyze the complimentary aspects of nonlinear optics, enabling a fundamental understanding of both a given effect and practical device applications. After a review chapter on linear phenomena important to nonlinear optics, the book tackles nonlinear phenomena with a look at the technologically important processes of second-harmonic generation, sum-frequency and difference-frequency generation, and the electro-optic effect. The author covers these processes in considerable detail at both theoretical and practical levels as the formalisms developed for these effects carry to subsequent topics, such as four-wave mixing, self-phase modulation, Raman scattering, Brillouin scattering, and soliton formation. Consistently connecting theory, process, effects, and applications, this introductory text encourages students to master key concepts and to solve nonlinear optics problems—preparing them for more advanced study. Along with extensive problems at the end of each chapter, it presents general algorithms accessible to any scientific graphical and programming package. Watch the author speak about the book.

Book excerpt: Directed toward physicists and engineers interested in the device applications enabled by nonlinear optics, this text is suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Its content is presented entirely on a classical basis and requires only an elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics. The authors demonstrate how real laboratory situations can diverge from ideal theory, acquainting readers with the kinds of problems common to construction of a nonlinear device. They also offer a detailed discussion of the practical problems and characteristics of nonlinear materials, as well as the selection procedures necessary to ensure the use of good material. Their treatment begins with an introduction to the theories of linear and nonlinear optics, along with the basic ideas behind them. Succeeding chapters explore phase matching and nonlinear materials, followed by detailed treatments of second-harmonic generation, parametric up-conversion, and optical parametric amplification and oscillation. Appendixes offer a comprehensive list of materials and their properties; the text concludes with references and an index.

Book excerpt: Second Harmonic (SHG) and Sum-Frequency Generation (SFG) have enabled the investigation of the physical and chemical properties of aqueous interfaces, yielding new information and considerable insight into the structure and dynamics at a molecular level. Novel behavior has been observed and valuable new methodologies have been developed. IR-Visible SFG has enabled the behavior of distinct chromophores within a molecular species at an aqueous interface to be monitored for the first time. An unexpected phase transition was observed at the liquid/vapor interface of aqueous solutions of acetonitrile. The structural change is manifested by shifts in the vibrational frequency and in the polarization of the SFG signal of the interfacial acetonitrile. This transition is analogous to those observed for monolayers of long chain amphiphilic species, also monitored for the first time with chromophore sensitivity. These results provide direct evidence that head and tail groups of amphiphilic molecules can orient independently, and a challenging picture of the nature of phase transitions in two dimensional molecular assemblies. Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation (EFISHG), a novel probe of charged interfaces, has been developed and applied to the study of the silica/aqueous interface and charged amphiphilic monolayers. Fundamental chemical quantities, such as the pKa of interfacial molecules, have been measured. In general, the interfacial acid-base equilibrium is shifted, with respect to the bulk, in a direction that favors the neutral species. Studies of the acid-base equilibrium of the silica/aqueous interface revealed two silanol sites whose acidity and thermodynamic parameters were determined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes fundamental theory and recent advances of sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. SFG spectroscopy is widely used as a powerful tool of surface characterization, although theoretical interpretation of the obtained spectra has been a major bottleneck for most users. Recent advances in SFG theory have brought about a breakthrough in the analysis methods beyond conventional empirical ones, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of SFG spectroscopy allows for simultaneous understanding of observed spectra and interface structure in unprecedented detail. This book explains these recently understood theoretical aspects of SFG spectroscopy by the major developer of the theory. The theoretical topics are treated at basic levels for undergraduate students and are described in relation to computational chemistry, such as molecular modeling and MD simulation, toward close collaboration of SFG spectroscopy and computational chemistry in the near future.
