Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A never-before-seen volume of poetry by the preeminent poet laureate Herman Hesse--a beautiful companion to Seasons of the Soul and the author's better-known prose work. Organized into four parts--spring, summer, autumn, and winter--The Seasons of Life relates the transitions in nature to the organic progressions of human life from birth through death. From the mundane to the sublime, the spiritual to the political, and private feeling to expressed opinion, Hesse touches on the range of human experience, inviting the reader to consider both the beauty and what Hesse called the "adversities of life." Beloved by readers as a wise and open friend, Hesse offers in this never-before-translated volume an honest portrayal of a whole life: its lessons and mysteries, its glories and despairs. The poet's voice--so treasured in his novels among a worldwide English-speaking audience--can now be enjoyed through this new translation in the follow-up to Seasons of the Soul.

The author uses various poetic styles, as well as colorful images, personification, and flights of fantasy to write about trees and their transformations throughout the seasons. In this book, you will read about tree swings and sweet figs, spring blossoms switching on like light bulbs and autumn leaves shaped like lemon drops and paper lanterns. You'll read of blood-thirsty dinosaur trees hovering over a quiet street and yogi trees saluting the morning sun, standing dead trees in Yellowstone Park and jet black, gothic forests on an alien world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Voice from the Soul of Trees Even before you read the first poem in this collection, I would like to set the stage for what the book is about. The book provides a contrast of nature and life, their parallel collage; their montage; and a voice that blends life together. Life, as we all experience it, does not have a singular dimension. Neither does this collection of poetry. But what is does provide is a focus on our collective entities; you, I, us, and mankind; embracing, and living life as one; beyond boundaries. First, we are one with self; and secondarily, we are one with the world in which we live together; especially our loved ones. The resonant analogy is with nature, man, and living. The dominate figure in this collection is the tree; nature; and how nature and life work together. Trees have always intrigued me. They represent how life can comingle, and how they can create their own palette just as sisters and brothers, uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, co-workers, acquaintances; people that challenge you; people that protect you, and people that love you; a universal tree. My initial inspiration came from this strong pecan tree that was in the backyard of my homestead. The tree was strong, stout, and sturdy; hovering limbs, knotty branches, and deep roots. This tree represented life on so many levels. It was more than a tree that provided spending money in her season of bounty or a tree that represented the toil of having to rack her abundant leaves. This tree represented wisdom; life; living; being grounded; strength of mankind, shelter, and unity. So with this frame of reference, I look to all trees to provide the same lessons. I can ride along the countryside, and see a tree, and become inspired by its beauty. I can feel the life that emits from her roots; her branches; her strength and her spirit. I see trees comingling together; oftentimes a unique family relies on the natural order of life to dictate their unique place. Reminiscent of life, our distinctive styles of living, and our sometimes disjointed realities, I look to the soul of the tree. It is from this perspective that I have penned this collection of poetry and prose. The uniqueness of the tree; in varying seasons, bless us with their flowers or their fruit. In varying seasons, the fruit is bountiful. In varying seasons, they lie dormant; bearing the harshness of cold winters. In varying seasons, we only see the stumps of their existence. In the spring of their season, they give us new trees strong enough to bear strong branches, knotty limbs, and deep roots. Celestine McMullen Allen

Book excerpt: n Kelly DuMar's girl in tree bark, the past, especially the life of the family of origin, acts as a kind of sap that provides nutrients for the photosynthesis that charges the poems. But the poems send their salubrious nourishment down to the past, which becomes transformed with the poem-making. The effect of the past on the present, and vice-versa, is not static; it is a reciprocally kinetic symbiosis, played out in fluent, daring narratives, in language keen with insight and liquid with sumptuous musicality. In almost every poem, a coupling of devastation and healing works a remarkable magic. -- Tom Daley, author of House You Cannot Reach

Book excerpt: My love of poetry pulls me back to my pen and paper for there seems to be no end to the things I want to write about. Life is poetic in many ways, the happy times and even sad events in life inspire me as they did to write my first book Memories Forgotten. I hope poetry lovers all over will enjoy reading my second book of poems, The Poem Reaper, as much as I enjoyed writing it. My writing is about real life and imaginary things. It is also inspirational as well as funny, including poems that children and older ones alike will enjoy. Life is like a field that is ready for harvest and I gather all the events around us and put them in poetic form. So if you enjoy reading about life and the life around us then you will enjoy the reaping of the seasons of life as I see it and wrote about in this book The Poem Reaper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This never-before-seen collection of poems offers the lyrical insights and spiritual wisdom of the Nobel Prize-winning author of Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and The Glass Bead Game—who inspired millions as he forged cultural bridges between the East and West. Vowing at an early age “to be a poet or nothing at all,” Hermann Hesse rebelled against formal education, focusing on a rigorous program of independent study that included literature, philosophy, art, and history. One result of these efforts was a series of novels that became counterculture bibles that remain widely influential today. Another was a body of evocative spiritual poetry. Published for the first time in English, these vivid, probing short works reflect deeply on the challenges of life and provide a spiritual solace that transcends specific denominational hymns, prayers, and rituals. The Seasons of the Soul offers valuable guidance in poetic form for those longing for a more meaningful life, seeking a sense of homecoming in nature, in each stage of life, and in a renewed relationship with the divine. Extensive quotations from his prose introduce each theme addressed in the book: love, imagination, nature, the divine, and the passage of time. A foreword by Andrew Harvey reintroduces us to a figure about whom some may have believed everything had already been said. Thoughtful commentary throughout from translator Ludwig Max Fischer helps readers understand the poems within the context of Hesse’s life.
