Thorne Darktower, Earl of Cliffehaven, stood tall and ominous, resentful of his own existence and plotting against his own family's life-long enemy until he is touched by the heart of an angel and shown the promise of life as she lifts the wool of hatred from his eyes. Aspen Tiller found herself as an unsuspecting pawn in a strategic game of self-preservation. With her innocence and child-like ideals held close to her, she reaches deep within herself to accomplish the impossible, command the respect of those around her, welcome the love of all who knew her and face the wrath of the devil who covets her...And still, embedded in her character, is a courage so noble that it refuses to allow her to give in to defeat as she trudges through the obstacles in her path to emerge anew...But does it destroy the woman so many love?

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,5, University of Göttingen, course: Literature of New Zealand, language: English, abstract: Title: The Concept of the Noble / Ignoble Savage in 20th Century New World Novels: Maurice Shadbolt's Season Of The Jew and Michael Blake's Dances With Wolves Confrontation of civilized Europeans with foreign "primitive" peoples has mostly been disatvantageous for the latter. The easiest way to deal with the strangeness of indigenous people was to regard them in a stereotypical way. Stereotypes such as the "noble" and the "ingnoble savage" were used to deprive such cultures of their humanity and to justify colonization and genocide. These stereotypes also found their way into European literature. In this work, I will analyze how the authors Maurice Shadbolt and Michael Blake deal with such stereotypes in their novels, Season Of The Jew and Dances With Wolves, respectively. I chose to compare these novels because they have many similarities but on the other hand also enough differences to make them an interesting comparison. Both novels are considered to be historical novels but there are some differences in the dealing with stereotypes, which I consider to be an important aspect of historical novels in general. Firstly, I will draw an outline of the history of the terms "noble" and "ignoble savage" and then make a concise definition of the terms. The next step will be a short book portrait of both novels in order to compare them to each other. In the main part of this work I will analyze how the concepts of the "noble savage" and he "ignoble savage" are dealt with in both novels. This will be done in consideration of various aspects which before have been presented in the definition of the terms. Exctract from the main text: d) Behaviour And Further Criteria One thing which astonished many European travellers was the missing idea of property among indigeous people

Download or read book Handel written by David Vickers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology represents scholarly literature devoted to Handel over the last few decades, and contains different kinds of studies of the composer's biography, operatic career, singers, librettists, and his relationship with the music of other composers. Case studies range from recent research that transforms our knowledge of large-scale English works to an interdisciplinary exploration of an individual opera aria. Designed to bring easy and convenient access to students, performers and music lovers, the wide-ranging articles are selected by David Vickers (co-editor of the recent Cambridge Handel Encyclopedia) from diverse sources - not only familiar important journals, but also specialist yearbooks, festschrifts, not easily accessible newsletters, conference proceedings and exhibition catalogues. Many of these represent an up-to-date understanding of modern Handel studies, deal with fascinating biographical issues (such as the composer's art collection, his chronic health problems, and the nature of popular anecdotal evidence), and fill gaps in the mainstream Handelian literature.

Book excerpt: A rollicking tour of the English country home after World War II, when swinging London collided with aristocratic values As the sun set slowly on the British Empire, its mansions fell and rose. Ancient families were reduced to demolishing the parts of their stately homes they could no longer afford, dukes and duchesses desperately clung to their ancestral seats, and a new class of homeowners bought their way into country life. A delicious romp, Noble Ambitions pulls us into these crumbling halls of power, leading us through the juiciest bits of postwar aristocratic history—from Mick Jagger dancing at deb balls to the scandals of Princess Margaret. Capturing the spirit of the age, historian Adrian Tinniswood proves that the country house is not only an iconic symbol, but a lens through which to understand the shifting fortunes of the British elite in an era of monumental social change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1896 in China, once a strong and independent nation with a proud heritage but now a victim of inept government and foreign imperialism. The gap between the rich and the poor is growing. While the wealthy enjoy the trappings of a comfortable life, less fortunate families (comprising a majority of the population) struggle to survive, often resorting to the practice of selling their young daughters into bondage to avoid starvation. Not surprisingly, calls for social reform and civil rebellion are getting louder. Zilan, a young wife and mother in a privileged mandarin family, faces the uncertainty with an outward calm that belies inner conflict. She is torn between her desire to honor the ancient Confucian principles at the core of China's male-dominated society, on one hand, and her concern for the lowly status of females, especially those born into poverty, on the other. In her own quiet way and with initiative that is rare for a woman of her era, she sets out to improve the lot of those around her. She coaches her bonded maids to become self-sufficient and tries to find a way to restore their freedom. Through impromptu history lessons, Zilan helps her young son, Mengfei, understand how the past plays a vital role in shaping the present. Of Noble Heritage gives us a window into life in China, as seen through Zilan's eyes, during the waning years of the Qing dynasty. In her heart, Zilan is a feminist despite being raised in an environment in which women are taught to be subservient. From her lessons with Mengfei, which provide glimpses into Chinese tradition and culture, we can appreciate her wisdom in combining education with independent thinking at a time when women were not expected to be wise or educated or to think independently.
