Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selection and Seasoning of Wood Wood, to combine all the strength and durability of which its species is capable, should be taken from a tree which has reached maturity. A tree is not necessarily mature because it has attained such and such dimensions, but when it has passed through the two first periods of its existence, already alluded to, viz., that in which it increases in height, and that in which its woody tissue is strengthened, then it is mature. Thus, for example, there are upright yellow-woods which having been always overtopped by adjacent trees, have reached an advanced age without having attained a greater diameter than 8 or 9 inches. They are mature, and if converted into poles would prove very durable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seasoning of Timber The wood next to the bark contains the most water. In the species which do not form heartwood the decrease toward the pith is gradual, but where this is formed the change from a more moist to a drier condition is usually quite abrupt at the sap wood limit. In Longleaf Pine, the wood of the outer 1 inch of a disk may contain 50 per cent of water, that of the next, or second inch, only 35 per cent, and that of the heartwood only 20 per cent. In such a tree the amount of water in any one sec tion varies with the amount of sapwood, and is therefore greater for the upper than the lower cuts, greater for the limbs than stems, and greatest of all in the roots. Different trees, even of the same kind and from the same place, differ as to the amount of water they contain. A thrifty tree contains more water than a stunted one, and a young tree more than an old one, while the wood of all trees varies in its moisture relations with the season of the year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seasoning Hickory Lumber and Handle Blanks Hickory (carya sop.) has earned the reputation of being one of the world's toughest woods. In shock resistance it has no equal. The reputation earned by hickory is based on the performance of high quality material in products requiring a high degree of strength and toughness. Today, a limited quantity of high-grade hickory is available and its value and scarcity are well recognized by the wood-using industries. There is, however, a large volume of low-grade hickory that was bypassed when loggers cut our hard wood forests, and many land managers are troubled by the increasing amount of growing space occupied by it. Although this low-grade hickory does not possess the quality or properties required in many products, it is a potentially valuable wood for many uses. A conference of federal, state, university, and industrial representatives was held in Clemson, S. C. In April 1953, and the Hickory Task Force was organized to promote the utilization of hickory. Accomplishment of this objective will be reached through research and publication of known information. The Southeastern Forest Experiment Station has assumed the responsibility to edit, publish, and distribute reports containing information which will be develop ed under this program. MM. Bouquet de la Grye, Conservator of Forests, and A. E. Dupont, Naval Construction Engineer, have had logs weighed to ascertain the quantity of water Oak retains. The experiments were made at Toulon on Oak from Bourgogne, and the following averages have been determined: --Density of wood on arrival, or at leaving immersion basin, after remaining in store 1 year 2, 4 5., 6.. 10 It is the custom at Toulon to exclusively employ Oak timber for the ribs of ships which has been at least 10 years in store. At the expiration of that time the timbers are cut up, and allowed to dry a whole summer in the sun. Then they are worked and adjusted under a covered shed, where they remain from 4 to 6 years, the bolt holes bored and open. t From this it is seen that in receiving wood when no special understanding has been established on this point, it is well to wait...

At the present rate of production there is over a cen tary's supply within this comparatively limited area in California. Paradoxical as it may seem, America's oldest tree is the least known and the last to be put to extensive use in the service of mankind. It was not until 1850 that any Redwood was cut for the market. In any study of the utilization of California black oak the drying, therefore, becomes an important consideration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Paul Nabhan takes the reader on a vivid and far-ranging journey across time and space in this fascinating look at the relationship between the spice trade and culinary imperialism. Drawing on his own family’s history as spice traders, as well as travel narratives, historical accounts, and his expertise as an ethnobotanist, Nabhan describes the critical roles that Semitic peoples and desert floras had in setting the stage for globalized spice trade. Traveling along four prominent trade routes—the Silk Road, the Frankincense Trail, the Spice Route, and the Camino Real (for chiles and chocolate)—Nabhan follows the caravans of itinerant spice merchants from the frankincense-gathering grounds and ancient harbors of the Arabian Peninsula to the port of Zayton on the China Sea to Santa Fe in the southwest United States. His stories, recipes, and linguistic analyses of cultural diffusion routes reveal the extent to which aromatics such as cumin, cinnamon, saffron, and peppers became adopted worldwide as signature ingredients of diverse cuisines. Cumin, Camels, and Caravans demonstrates that two particular desert cultures often depicted in constant conflict—Arabs and Jews—have spent much of their history collaborating in the spice trade and suggests how a more virtuous multicultural globalized society may be achieved in the future.
