Book excerpt: An apparently contiguous stock of American lobsters, Homarus americanus, is concentrated along the outer continental shelf margin and slope from Corsair Canyon westward and southward to the region of Baltimore Canyon. Between April 1968 and May 1971 we captured, tagged, and released a total of 7, 326 lobsters at 52 localities between Corsair Canyon and Baltimore Canyon. As of December 1972, 945 recaptures (12.9% recovery) had been reported, providing a basis for interpretation of seasonal and long-term movements, as well as measurements of growth rate and moult frequency. A classification scheme is developed and applied to distinguish between apparently directed seasonal movements (migrations), localized movements of less than 10 nautical miles (18.5 km), and long-period (>120 days) dispersions of 10 miles or more. This last category includes point to point tracks that cannot be objectively resolved in terms of directionality and may represent random dispersal, a summation of seasonally directed tracks, or both. We conclude from the track analyses that at least 20% of the offshore lobsters annually engage in directed shoalward migrations in spring and summer with return to the shelf margin and slope in fall and winter. This conclusion is reinforced by independent analysis of the time/depth/temperature associations of tagged lobsters at recapture which, of itself, suggests that an even larger proportion of the offshore lobsters annually effect directed migrations in response to seasonal temperature variations.

Book excerpt: This study examined American lobster (Homarus americanus) habitat and movements within Minas Basin and Minas Passage in advance of turbine installations at the FORCE test facility in Minas Passage, Bay of Fundy. Prior environmental assessment data, modeled current speeds and biogeophysical data from seafloor grab samples and seafloor video footage taken during the CCGS Hudson scientific cruise 2013-13 were used to prepare lobster habitat suitability maps for the Minas Basin, Minas Passage and Minas Channel. Although habitat quality varied spatially, most of the surveyed region represented good lobster habitat; less suitable areas were found with localized harsh conditions, e.g. scoured seafloor or high bottom drag. Vemco acoustic telemetry tags and VR2w receivers were used to track seasonal movements of lobster. Strategically deployed acoustic receivers were used to test the hypothesis that lobster move outward from Minas Basin through the FORCE test area in Minas Passage during late fall and inward in spring. A total of 125 adult lobsters were sourced from commercial catches in 2011 and 2012, fitted with Vemco acoustic transmitters and numbered disc tags, and released in Minas Basin. A total of 40-tagged lobsters (34 from 2011, 6 from 2012) were detected in Minas Passage, including FORCE and/or Minas Basin. More females than males were detected in Minas Passage; within both sexes, movement rates were variable. Although seasonal outward movement was detected for some lobsters, it appears that a portion of the population overwinters in Minas Basin. This conclusion is supported by two years of lobster tracking and interviews with six LFA 35 lobster fishers.

Book excerpt: Ovigerous American lobsters, Homarus americanus, undertake seasonal migrations thought to maximize temperature experienced by their embryos. Using satellite tags, we tracked two ovigerous females from Grand Manan between September 2013 and July 2014. The tags surfaced near Beaver Harbour, NB and Port George, NS, 33 and 123 km from the tagging location, respectively. Recorded depth and temperature for both lobsters were remarkably similar, reflecting shallow-to-deep and deep-to-shallow migrations in the fall and spring, respectively. A change in water temperature appeared to trigger fall movements, but probably not spring movements. An individual-based model indicated that our lobsters experienced higher temperatures than virtual lobsters moving randomly or not at all, but lower than the maximum possible. This study provides novel insights into the nature and function of these seasonal migrations, which represents an essential first step in our ability to predict lobster movements and hatch location in a rapidly changing ocean.

Book excerpt: The American lobster is one of the most valuable commercial species in the coastal waters of southern Nova Scotia. An understanding of their distribution and migration is therefore essential to management of the stock, yet little is known of their geographic discreteness. As part of an ongoing series of tagging studies of Nova Scotia lobsters, this study determined if there was lobster movement between the east and west side of the Cape Sable area, and the mid- and offshore areas, and whether lobsters make seasonal deep-shallow movements. Lobsters were tagged in the midshore and inshore areas to take advantage of fishing effort occurring in offshore areas (more than 92 km from the coast), mid- and inshore areas in obtaining recoveries. A total of 9,254 lobsters ranging from 20-173 mm carapace length (CL) were tagged and released at 5 locations from 1983-87. A reward of up to $5 was paid for tag returns with information on recapture date, location, depth and CL. Data from tag returns up to March 31, 1988 were analyzed in this study.

Grant This hands-on approach provides guidance to the step-by-step applications of systems analysis and simulation to questions about ecological systems. At the same time, it explains general principles without requiring that readers have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Chapter 1 traces the development of systems ecology introducing basic concepts, while Chapters 2 through 5 present the four phases of systems analysis: conceptual model formulation, quantitative specification of the model, model validation, and model use. 1986 (0 471-89236-X) 338 pp. Bioeconomic Modelling and Fisheries Management Colin W. Clark Discusses the management of commercial marine fisheries and the relationship between the economic forces affecting the fishing industry and the biological factors that determine the production and supply of fish in the sea. Topics focus on methods of preventing overfishing and overcapitalization, economically effective and practical forms of regulation, management of developing fisheries, natural fluctuations of fish stocks, and complexities of marine ecosystems. 1985 (0 471-87394-2) 291 pp. Methods in Marine Zooplankton Ecology Makoto Omori and Tsutomu Ikeda Encompassing basic principles, procedures, and research problems, this book serves as a complete guide to current methods used in the study of marine zooplankton. The techniques are equally applicable to small organisms and to the larval stages of larger, commercially important organisms. Chapters start with a brief, but well-summarized introduction to zooplankton, followed by field sampling strategies and laboratory methods, and then conclude with estimates of productivity and analysis of community structure. Each method is described in detail, including a discussion of the problems inherent in using it. 1984 (0 471-80107-0) 322 pp.

Book excerpt: The overarching goal of this thesis was to enhance our understanding of the implications of benthic movements by American lobster Homarus americanus to the species' ecology and demography. The first chapter discusses the use of an ultrasonic telemetry system to track juvenile lobsters in nature for the first time. Juveniles were highly active and mobile, and they behaved as "central place foragers", which kept them on productive but patchy nursery grounds despite the extensive movements they displayed. Juveniles did not display an increase in time spent outside of shelter or average daily home range with increasing body size, as was predicted in the literature. The second chapter discusses the use of two complimentary ultrasonic systems to simultaneously track juvenile, adolescent and adult lobster for the first time. This study confirmed some of the observations made in Chapter 1, such as lobsters being very active, displaying diurnal activity rhythms (more active at night than during the day), and behaving as central place foragers, as well as juveniles not demonstrating an increase in activity with increasing body size. It did, however, reveal ontogenetic changes in behavior over the expanded size range, with daily home range increasing gradually with increasing body size, and study length displacements being markedly greater for adolescents/adults than for juveniles. The third chapter re-analyzed data from an extensive mark-recapture study conducted in the southern Gult of St. Lawrence between 1980-1996 to estimate, for the first time, the relative contribution of benthic movements and larval dispersal to demographic connectivity in lobster. Estimates of pelagic and benthic movements were comparable, when accounting for the fact that adults can disperse over the course of several years while larvae disperse over a single season only. This novel finding, along with the fact that benthic movements are not constrained by currents the way pelagic dispersal is, and that lobsters move relatively little in our study area compared to other parts of the species' range, suggest strongly that more consideration should be given to the contribution of benthic movements to connectivity and stock structure in the management of the American lobster.
