The importance of freshwater wetlands to juvenile coho salmon in large river networks is not well known. I studied three wetland sites along the North Thompson River from May 2021 - May 2023 to understand how seasonal variation in wetland connectivity and water quality influence juvenile coho salmon habitat use. I used monthly mark-recapture sampling to estimate juvenile coho salmon abundances. Seasonal dynamics of juvenile coho salmon in wetlands was intertwined with connectivity and abiotic conditions. Juvenile coho salmon recruited as age 0 to wetlands during spring high flows but used wetland habitats year-round. Periods of high density, low oxygen, and high temperatures were associated with lower growth and abundances. This research advances understanding of the importance of wetlands and how they contribute to a mosaic of shifting habitats for juvenile coho salmon.

Book excerpt: Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) rely on unique habitats during the winter season, which may dictate how much individuals may growth and when migration from freshwater rearing habitat to the ocean occurs. Here I analyze movement timing and growth patterns for coho salmon through a field-based study and a literature review. For the field portion, I examined hatchery-stocked juvenile coho salmon across four stream basins in the Russian River watershed, California to determine the relative importance of climate, landscape, and fish size metrics in predicting movement and growth patterns over a winter rearing and spring smolt outmigration time period (December 2014-June 2015). I observed three unique movement strategies: winter parr movement, spring smolt movement, and inter-tributary movement. Movement was predicted in relation to daily temperature and precipitation, followed by in-stream and upslope basin conditions in random forest modeling. Specifically, fish that moved later were associated with basins that contained higher productivity and low-gradient floodplain habitats, while fish that moved earlier came from streams that lacked invertebrate prey and had limited low-gradient rearing habitat. Fish size and timing of movement were the primary predictors of growth, with relatively larger fish in the spring growing faster than fish that were relatively smaller prior to winter. These relationships suggest that hatchery-release fish are still highly influenced by environmental conditions once released, especially in terms of initial seasonal movement, and that watershed conditions should be considered when utilizing hatchery-rearing programs to supplement wild fish populations. In North America, coho salmon populations are distributed from Alaska through California, and may exhibit unique movement and growth patterns in relationship to population-scale vulnerability (Endangered Species Act listing), basin area, and availability and types of rearing habitat. For the second part of my thesis, I conducted a literature review to assess what factors are commonly considered in predicting movement and growth patterns for these fish, as well as the types (season and life stage) and number of movement strategies reported. Eighteen studies were summarized, of which sixteen identified unique movement strategies, ranging from one to four. Despite a wide range of basin areas and latitudes, winter parr and spring smolt movements were commonly observed, with authors primarily relating these behaviors to in-stream habitat and fish size metrics. Additionally, growth was linked positively and primarily with off-channel winter rearing, which may outweigh the importance of fish size in predicting growth when high quality rearing habitats are available during the winter season. Recognizing movement timing diversity and its drivers can help recover threatened coho salmon populations. More widely distributed populations may have unique phenotypic expressions based on localized genetic and environmental interactions, increasing diversity and overall stability across the population, a concept known as the portfolio effect. Understanding fish-habitat relationships can aid recovery efforts by providing a framework of climatic and watershed conditions that support unique behaviors, even in already severely limited populations.

Book excerpt: In large, seasonally dynamic and spatially complex watersheds, the availability and relative importance of various food resources for stream fishes can be expected to vary substantially. While numerous studies have attempted to uncover the trophic linkages that support stream salmonids, much of these efforts have occurred at small scales that disregard variability of food resources inherent in lotic systems. This study aimed to determine large-scale patterns in the contributions of freshwater, terrestrial, and marine-derived food resources to juvenile Chinook and Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and O. kisutch) in the large, glacially influenced Susitna River, Alaska. I quantified diet patterns both spatially, across different macrohabitat types positioned along a 169-km segment of the river corridor, and temporally, from June to October, using stable isotope and stomach content analyses. To further resolve energy pathways from basal carbon sources to juvenile salmon, I determined the relative roles of terrestrial organic matter and freshwater periphyton food sources to aquatic benthic invertebrate diets. The latter analysis showed that invertebrate consumers were more reliant on freshwater periphyton than on terrestrial organic matter. Bayesian stable isotope mixing models indicated that juvenile salmon in the middle Susitna River were, in turn, largely supported by freshwater invertebrate prey regardless of spatial and temporal context. The relative contribution of marine-derived prey (salmon eggs) to juvenile salmon diets was greatest in the fall within tributary mouth and off-channel macrohabitats during both years of the study. Terrestrial invertebrate prey contributions were generally greatest during mid-summer within all macrohabitat types sampled, however this pattern varied across years. No upstream to downstream diet pattern was apparent from the data. These results underscore the importance of freshwater energy pathways for sustaining juvenile Chinook and Coho salmon in the Susitna River and provide further spatial and temporal context for the importance of pulsed marine and terrestrial prey subsidies. As Pacific salmon stocks continue to decline, management and mitigation efforts should operate on knowledge gained from studies that encompass the largescale spatial and temporal variability inherent in riverine landscapes.

Book excerpt: Natural and gabion modified habitats containing coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) were observed and measured seasonally in East Fork Lobster Creek, a fifth order stream in western Oregon. Coho salmon usually inhabited backwater and secondary channel pools in winter. Large wood debris complexes and undercut banks were the primary sources of cover in winter. Beaver activity played a vital role in creating summer and winter habitat. Discharge rates seemed to have more influence than temperature in regulating coho winter hiding behavior. Lower than usual stream discharges of the 1984-85 winter allowed many fish to move out from cover, and a large portion of the coho were found more than 2 meters from cover. Coho were also not as dependent on cover during the low flows of spring and summer, and these low discharges allowed fish to inhabit less complex sites. Study sites with gabions maintained large numbers of fry throughout the spring and summer. Fish were attracted to the gabion-created plunge pools in low stream discharge months but not in high discharge months. During winter high discharges, gabion sites with backwater pool habitat held relatively larger numbers of fish than gabion sites without such habitat.
