Book excerpt: Detecting gravitational waves is just the start of the story; to understand their nature and the systems that emitted them, we develop methods to correctly recover signals and characterize their source properties. This thesis describes three topics in Advanced LIGO gravitational-wave data analysis, each addressing technical challenges in order to improve the detection and measurement of gravitational-wave signals from compact binary coalescences. In the first project, I present a set of numerical relativity simulations that track the coalescences of binary black holes. I describe the methods by which the simulations were performed, as well as the techniques used to evaluate their gravitational waveforms. A comprehensive error analysis concludes that the minimum overlap of numerical relativity waveforms is 99.97%. My second project improves one of Advanced LIGO's detection pipelines by deriving a source-dependent likelihood-ratio ranking statistic to rank incoming compact binary coalescence signals. Results show that using a source-dependent ranking statistic improves the pipeline's sensitive volume-time -- and therefore, its sensitivity -- for binary neutron stars detections by 6-16%. In my final project, I determine the detectability of precessing compact binaries, deriving an analytic model and then estimating quantitatively the fraction of detected events where precession is measurable by gravitational-wave detectors. My model is consistent with the lack of detectable precession from currently observed signals and indicates, in particular, that GW170817 was not emitted by a strongly precessing system.

In developing TIGER, Tjonnie Li shows a large amount of creativity and originality, and his contribution is an important step in the direction of a possible discovery of a deviation (if any) from General Relativity. In another section, Li's thesis deals with cosmology, describing an exploratory study where the possibility of cosmological parameters measurement through gravitational wave compact binary coalescence signals associated with electromagnetic counterparts is evaluated. In particular, the study explores the capabilities of the future Einstein Telescope observatory. Although of very long term-only applicability, this is again a thorough investigation, nicely put in the context of the current and the future observational cosmology.

On 14 September 2015, the LIGO observatory reported the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the merger of a pair of black holes. For a brief fraction of a second, the power emitted by this merger exceeded the combined output of all stars in the visible universe. This has since been followed by another confirmed detection and a third candidate binary black hole merger. These detections heralded the birth of an exciting new field: gravitational-wave astrophysics.

From a theoretical standpoint, the grand-challenge problem of the full evolution of a Binary Black Hole (BBH) system has been solved numerically, and a variety of source simulations are made available steadfastly. On the observational side, the first generation of state-of-the-art GW detectors, LIGO and Virgo, have achieved their design goal, collected data and provided astrophysically meaningful limits. The second generation of detectors are expected to start running by 2015. Inspired by this zeitgeist, this thesis focuses on the detection of potential GW signatures from the coalescence of BBH in ground-based laser interferometers. The LIGO Scientific Collaboration has implemented different algorithms to search for transient GW signatures, targeting different portions of the BBH coalescence waveform. This thesis has used the existing algorithms to study the detection potential of GW from colliding BBH in LIGO in a wide range of source parameters, such as mass and spin of the black holes, using a sample of data from the last two months of the S5 LIGO science run (14 Aug 2007 to 30 Sept 2007). This thesis also uses numerical relativity waveforms made available via the Numerical INJection Analysis project (NINJA). Methods such as the Chirplet based analysis and the use of multivariate classifiers to optimize burst search algorithms have been introduced in this thesis. These performance studies over a wide parameter space were designed to optimize the discovery potential of ground-based GW detectors and defining strategies for the search of BBH signatures in advanced LIGO data, as a step towards the realization of GW astronomy.

The same source is expected to emit strong gravitational radiation, detectable with existing and planned gravitational wave observatories. The focus of this work is to describe a series of searches for gravitational waves (GW) from compact binary coalescence (CBC) events triggered by short gamma-ray burst detections. Specifically, we will present the motivation, frameworks, implementations and results of searches for GW associated with short gamma-ray bursts detected by Swift, Fermi{GBM and the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) gamma-ray detectors. We will begin by presenting the main concepts that lay the foundation of gravitational waves emission, as they are formulated in the theory of General Relativity; we will also brie y describe the operational principles of GW detectors, together with explaining the main challenges that the GW detection process is faced with. Further, we will motivate the use of observations in the electromagnetic (EM) band as triggers for GW searches, with an emphasis on possible EM signals from CBC events. We will briefly present the data analysis techniques including concepts as matched{filtering through a collection of theoretical GW waveforms, signal{to{ noise ratio, coincident and coherent analysis approaches, signal{based veto tests and detection candidates' ranking. We will use two different GW{GRB search examples to illustrate the use of the existing coincident and coherent analysis methods. We will also present a series of techniques meant to improve the sensitivity of existing GW triggered searches. These include shifting background data in time in order to obtain extended coincident data and setting a prior on the GRB inclination angle, in accordance with astrophysical observations, in order to restrict the searched parameter space. We will describe the GW data analysis and present results from a GW search around 12 short gamma-ray bursts detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) between 2006 and 2007. The IPN{detected bursts usually have extended localization error boxes and a search for GW was performed at different sky locations across these error regions. Since no GW detection was made, we set upper limits on the distances to the GRB progenitors; we briefly discuss the implications that two IPN GRBs error regions overlap two nearby galaxies.

Book excerpt: The existence of gravitational waves was first predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity a century ago. However gravitational waves have not yet been directly detected1. Their direct detection will open a new observational window allowing one to listen to the Universe for the first time. Einstein's gravitational spectrum spans from extremely low frequencies, with wave periods comparable to the age of the Universe, to the audio band, with frequencies roughly between 10 Hz and several kilohertz. The subject of this thesis is the direct detection of gravitational waves in two different frequency bands: a) the audio band observed by terrestrial laser interferometers; b) the nanohertz band surveyed by pulsar timing arrays. Ground-based interferometers, such as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), are primarily searching for signals from binary coalescences of neutron stars and black holes. As the two objects orbit around each other, they lose energy through the emission of gravitational waves. As the orbital period decreases, the gravitational wave frequency and amplitude increase until the binary merges, emitting copious amounts of gravitational waves. Advanced LIGO detectors, which came online in September 2015, are expected to detect tens of such events each year after they reach design sensitivity in around 2019.In addition to those individually detectable events, a gravitational wave background exists as a result of the combined emission of numerous sources throughout the Universe. This provides another promising target for advanced detectors. Modelling such a background signal and predicting its detection prospects is the subject of the first part of this thesis. We present a comprehensive study on the gravitational wave background from compact binary coalescences throughout the Universe. It improves on previous work by using observation-based source distributions and realistic gravitational waveforms. We show that advanced detectors are likely to detect this signal assuming a realistic coalescence rate. We also investigate if subtracting the contribution of individually detectable events can potentially unmask the highly sought primordial signals.Pulsar timing arrays target gravitational waves at the lower nanohertz band. This is achieved through performing long-term radio timing observations of a spatial array of millisecond pulsars. In the second part of this thesis we focus on detection and sky localization of single sources by pulsar timing arrays, in particular signals expected from individual supermassive binary black holes. We have developed two independent coherent methods for this purpose. The first technique is fast and robust, which is adapted from network analysis methods used by ground-based detectors. We demonstrate its effectiveness for three types of sources: circular binaries, eccentric binaries and bursts. To test its robustness, we apply it to realistic synthetic data sets that include effects such as uneven sampling, heterogeneous data spans and measurement precision. With the second technique, we perform an all-sky search for continuous waves in the recent Parkes Pulsar Timing Array data set. Although no statistically significant signals were detected, the quality of the data allows us to set the best limit on the gravitational wave amplitude in the nanohertz regime. With this data set we could detect gravitational waves from supermassive binary black holes with masses higher than one billion solar mass out to a luminosity distance of about 100 Mpc.1Note added - It was announced on 11 February 2016 that a signal from the coalescence of two black holes was detected by two LIGO detectors on 14 September 2015 (Abbott et al. 2016).

Book excerpt: Orbiting compact binaries - such as binary black holes, binary neutron stars and neutron star-black hole binaries - are among the most promising sources of gravitational waves observable by ground-based interferometric detectors. Despite numerous sophisticated engineering techniques, the gravitational wave signals will be buried deep within noise generated by various instrumental and environmental processes, and need to be extracted via a signal processing technique referred to as matched filtering. Matched filtering requires large banks of signal templates that are faithful representations of the true gravitational waveforms produced by astrophysical binaries. The accurate and efficient production of templates is thus crucial to the success of signal processing and data analysis. To that end, the dissertation presents a numerical technique that calibrates existing analytical (Post-Newtonian) waveforms, which are relatively inexpensive, to more accurate fiducial waveforms that are computationally expensive to generate. The resulting waveform family is significantly more accurate than the analytical waveforms, without incurring additional computational costs of production. Certain kinds of transient background noise artefacts, called "glitches", can masquerade as gravitational wave signals for short durations and throw-off the matched-filter algorithm. Identifying glitches from true gravitational wave signals is a highly non-trivial exercise in data analysis which has been attempted with varying degrees of success. We present here a machine-learning based approach that exploits the various attributes of glitches and signals within detector data to provide a classification scheme that is a significant improvement over previous methods. The dissertation concludes by investigating the possibility of detecting a non-linear DC imprint, called the Christodoulou memory, produced in the arms of ground-based interferometers by the recently detected gravitational waves. The memory, which is even smaller in amplitude than the primary (detected) gravitational waves, will almost certainly not be seen in the current detection event. Nevertheless, future space-based detectors will likely be sensitive enough to observe the memory.

We assume the knowledge of General Relativity theory, though we will concentrate on the physics and often omit mathematically strict derivations. We provide references to already existing literature where possible, this helps us to see a broad picture, skipping the details. The uniqueness of this book is in that it covers three frequency bands and three major world-wide efforts to detect gravitational waves. The LIGO and Virgo scientific collaboration has detected first gravitational waves and the merger of black holes become now almost a routine. We do expect many discoveries yet to come, especially in the joined gravitational and electromagnetic observations. LISA, the space-based gravitational wave observatory, will be launched around 2034 and will be able to detect thousands of GW sources in the milli-Hz band. Pulsar timing array observations have accumulated 20-years' worth of data and we expected detection of GWs in the nano-Hz band within the next decade. We describe the gravitational wave sources and data analysis techniques in each frequency band.
