Book Synopsis Search for the Higgs Boson by : John V. Lee
Download or read book Search for the Higgs Boson written by John V. Lee and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Higgs boson is an undiscovered elementary particle, thought to be a vital piece of the closely fitting jigsaw of particle physics. Like all particles, it has wave properties akin to those ripples on the surface of a pond which has been disturbed; indeed, only when the ripples travel as a well defined group is it sensible to speak of a particle at all. In quantum language the analogue of the water surface which carries the waves is called a field. Each type of particle has its own corresponding field. The Higgs field is a particularly simple one -- it has the same properties viewed from every direction, and in important respects in indistinguishable from empty space. Thus physicists conceive of the Higgs field being "switched on", pervading all of space and endowing it with "grain" like that of a plank of wood. The direction of the grain in undetectable, and only becomes important once the Higgs' interactions with other particles are taken into account. for instance, particles call vector bosons can travel with the grain, in which case they move easily for large distances and may be observed as photons - that is, particles of light that we can see or record using a camera; or against, in which case their effective range is much shorter, and we call them W or Z particles. These play a central role in the physics of nuclear reactions, such as those occurring in the core of the sun. The Higgs field enables us to view these apparently unrelated phenomenon as two sides of the same coin; both may be described in terms of the properties of the same vector bosons. When particles of matter such as electrons or quarks (elementary constituents of protons and neutrons, which in turn constitute the atomic nucleus) travel through the grain, they are constantly flipped "head-over-heels". this forces them to move more slowly than their natural speed, that of light, by making them heavy.
Book Synopsis Particle Physics and Cosmology by : Howard E. Haber
Download or read book Particle Physics and Cosmology written by Howard E. Haber and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the lecture courses conducted at the School of the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (TASI, Colorado, USA) on Elementary Particle Physics in 2002. In this School, three series of lectures are presented in parallel in the area of phenomenology, TeV-scale physics, and astroparticles physics. The phenomenology lecture series covered a broad spectrum of standard research techniques used to interpret present day and future collider data. The TeV-scale physics lecture series focused on modern speculations about physics beyond the Standard Model, with an emphasis on supersymmetry and extra-dimensional theories. The lecture series on astroparticle physics treated recent developments in theories of dark matter and dark energy, the cosmic microwave background, and prospects for the upcoming era of gravitational wave astronomy. Contents: Phenomenology Lecture Series: Neutrinos (Y Grossman); Precision Electroweak Physics (K Matchev); Effective Field Theories (I Z Rothstein); Bottom Quark Physics and the Heavy Quark Expansion (M Luke); The Top Quark, QCD and New Physics (S Dawson); Tevatron Physics (J Womersley); TeV-Scale Physics Lecture Series: Non-Perturbative Sypersymmetry (J Terning); New Directions for New Dimensions: KaluzaOCoKlein Theory, Large Extra Dimensions and the Brane World (K R Dienes); New Ideas in Symmetry Breaking (M Quiros); Extra Dimensions and Branes (C Csaki); Astroparticle Physics Lecture Series: Introduction to Cosmology (M Trodden & S M Carroll); Dark Matter (K A Olive); Gravitational Waves from the Early Universe (A Buonanno). Readership: Researchers, academics and graduate students in high energy physics, mathematical physics and astrophysics."

Book Synopsis Heavy Neutral Particle Decays to Tau Pairs by : Michail Bachtis
Download or read book Heavy Neutral Particle Decays to Tau Pairs written by Michail Bachtis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis spans a wide range of experimental particle physics subjects, starting from level-1 trigger electronics to the final results of the search for Higgs boson decay and to tau lepton pairs. The thesis describes an innovative reconstruction algorithm for tau decays and details how it was instrumental in providing a measurement of Z decay to tau lepton pairs. The reliability of the analysis is fully established by this measurement before the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs is considered. The work described here continues to serve as a model for analysing CMS Higgs to tau leptons measurements.
Book Synopsis Tau Lepton Physics - Proceedings Of The Second Workshop by : K K Gan
Download or read book Tau Lepton Physics - Proceedings Of The Second Workshop written by K K Gan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-04-08 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The II International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics was held in Ohio, USA in September 1992. Its purpose is to gather the experts on tau lepton physics to examine the current understanding of the tau lepton physics and to assess future prospects. A particular emphasis of the Workshop was a detailed examination of the '1-prong problem': the discrepancy between the inclusive measurement of one-charged-particle decay branching ratio and the sum of the exclusive decays. The Workshop also stimulated new ideas on tests of the Standard Model using the third generation lepton and assessed the future prospects of the lepton physics.
