Book excerpt: A search is conducted for both resonant and non-resonant high-mass new phenomena in dielectron and dimuon final states. The search uses 3.2fb-1 of proton-proton collision data, collected at √s = 13TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015. The dilepton invariant mass is used as the discriminating variable. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed; therefore limits are set on the signal model parameters of interest at 95% credibility level. Upper limits are set on the cross-section times branching ratio for resonances decaying to dileptons, and the limits are converted into lower limits on the resonance mass, ranging between 2.74 TeV and 3.36 TeV, depending on the model. As a result, lower limits on the llqq contact interaction scale are set between 16.7 TeV and 25.2 TeV, also depending on the model.

Book excerpt: The associated production of a W boson and a single charm quark (W+c) is the only process in proton-proton collisions that directly probes the strange quark content of the proton. In this thesis, W+charm production is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV, as recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The analysis focuses on the identification of W bosons in their leptonic decay to a muon and a neutrino and charm quarks are tagged via the full reconstruction of D*-Mesons. The measured cross sections of W+c production are used, in combination with other relevant CMS results and the most precise HERA DIS data, in a QCD analysis to determine the strange quark content of the proton. The resulting strange quark distribution and suppression, with respect to the other light sea quarks, are in good agreement with those obtained in neutrino scattering experiments and extend their kinematic reach.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents two searches for new physics characterized by pair-production of strongly interacting particles, each decaying to hadronic jets and a particle that is not detectable. The searches use the full 13 TeV proton-proton collision dataset produced by CERN's Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the CMS detector from 2016 to 2018, with total integrated luminosity 137 fb-1. The presence of particles interacting too weakly to be detected is inferred using imbalance in the transverse momentum of the collision products, and sensitivity to pair-production is enhanced by requiring large values of the kinematic variable MT2 in events with at least two jets. The first search is inclusive, binning events using the total hadronic transverse energy, the total number of jets, the number of jets reconstructed as originating from a bottom quark, and either the value of MT2 in multijet events, or the transverse momentum of the jet in monojet events. The second search extends the first, by requiring the presence of a disappearing track in the event, and adds binning in the length and transverse momentum of the disappearing track. Both searches are sensitive to a variety of extensions to the Standard Model that include dark matter candidates. Of greatest interest, the results set constraints on pair production of squarks and gluinos as predicted by R-parity conserving supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, in which the lightest supersymmetric particle is a neutralino. The first search is sensitive to any decay chain terminating in Standard Model hadrons plus the neutralino, while the second specifically targets, with greatly enhanced sensitivity, decay chains containing an intermediate long-lived chargino. These constraints are the most stringent yet produced by any experiment.

Book excerpt: Supersymmetry, if realized in nature, predicts the existence of new particles, as chargino and neutralino, which might manifest themselves with peculiar signatures. Three leptons and large missing transverse energy in the event could signal their associated production. They report the latest results of the search performed by the CDF Collaboration in {radical}s = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at Tevatron Run II.

Book excerpt: A measurement of the t{bar t} pair production cross section is presented using 162 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the CDF experiment during Run II at the Tevatron. t{bar t} events in the lepton+jets channel are isolated by identifying electrons and muons, reconstructing jets and transverse missing energy, and identifying b jets with a secondary vertex tagging algorithm. The efficiency of the algorithm is measured in a control sample using a novel technique that is less dependent on the simulation. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c{sup 2}, a cross section of {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 5.6{sub -1.1}{sup +1.2}(stat.){sub -0.6}{sup +0.9}(syst.)pb is measured.

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 18.8 inverse femtobarns, at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The event selection requires at least two jets and no isolated leptons. The razor variables are used to quantify the transverse momentum balance in the jet momenta. The study is performed separately for events with and without jets originating from b quarks. The observed yields are consistent with the expected backgrounds and, depending on the nature of the production mechanism, dark matter production at the LHC is excluded at 90% confidence level for a mediator mass scale Lambda below 1 TeV. The use of razor variables yields results that complement those previously published.

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the production cross section for ZW and ZZ boson pairs in final states with a pair of charged leptons, from the decay of a Z boson, and at least two jets, from the decay of a W or Z boson, using the full sample of proton-antiproton collisions recorded with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to 8.9 fb(̂-1) of integrated luminosity. We increase the sensitivity to vector boson decays into pairs of quarks using a neural network discriminant that exploits the differences between the spatial spread of energy depositions and charged-particle momenta contained within the jet of particles originating from quarks and gluons. Additionally, we employ new jet energy corrections to Monte Carlo simulations that account for differences in the observed energy scales for quark and gluon jets. The number of signal events is extracted through a simultaneous fit to the dijet mass spectrum in three classes of events: events likely to contain jets with a heavy-quark decay, events likely to contain jets originating from light quarks, and events that fail these identification criteria. We determine the production cross section to be 2.5 +2.0 -1.0 pb (

Book excerpt: The author presents a search for anomalous kinematics of t$ar{t}$ dilepton events in p$ar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV using 193 pb-1 of data collected with the CDF II detector. They developed a new a priori technique designed to silate the subset in a data sample revealing the largest deviation from Standard Model expectations and to quantify the significance of this departure. In the four-variable space considered, no particular subset shows a significant discrepancy and they find that the probability to obtain a data sample less consistent with the Standard Model than what is observed is 1.0-4.5%.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for a fundamental theory of matter and forces in the universe has ever since attracted the interest of physicists. The large success of the gauge theories in the description of low-energy phenomena nourishes the hope that gauge symmetries are the clue to a unified description of all fundamental processes at high energy scales. Particle collision experiments of the past decades have probed the structure of matter with increasing resolution. The phenomena observed in collision experiments at current energy scales are described with a large precision by the Standard Model of particle physics. Nevertheless, many open questions in the Standard Model suggest that it is an effective low-energy theory of a more fundamental theory: the numbers of free parameters of the model, the numbers of generations, the hierarchy between the electroweak scale and the Planck scale, the pending integration of gravity and the evolution of the strengths of the fundamental forces at large energy regimes. In addition, recent cosmological data suggest that the density of ordinary matter which is described by the Standard Model, corresponds only to a small fraction of the matter density in the universe. Many of the above mentioned problems are addressed by an extension of the Standard Model that is based on an additional internal symmetry, the Supersymmetry (SUSY) of fermions and bosons. It predicts the existence of a partner for each known fundamental particle with the same quantum numbers but different spin. Supersymmetry must be broken at the energy regime of present collider experiments which leads to different masses of Standard Model particles and their super-partners. Low-mass supersymmetric partners are expected to be produced at a sufficient rate at present or future collider experiments. In the analysis performed in this thesis, it is assumed that SUSY particles decay into their Standard Model partners and the stable lightest supersymmetric particle, which is only weakly interacting, carrying away energy and momentum and leading to detector signatures with large missing energy. Supersymmetric particles have been searched for at the electron-positron collider LEP up to the kinematic limit. No evidence for these particles has been observed which results in lower limits on their masses. Additional constraints stem from precision measurements of quantities, which are sensitive to corrections from SUSY particles and from the search for dark matter in cosmological experiments. The search for SUSY particles beyond the reach of LEP is continued at larger energy regimes at present and future hadron colliders. In its second phase of data taking (Run II), the center-of-mass energy of the proton-antiproton collider Tevatron at Fermilab has been raised and the luminosity has been increased considerably. The D0 experiment, one of the two Tevatron experiments, has been upgraded accordingly. The Tevatron collider allows to probe a substantial SUSY mass range beyond the LEP limits. The search will be continued at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which is presently being constructed at the European Research laboratory for particle physics CERN in Geneva. At hadron colliders the supersymmetric partners of quarks and gluons are copiously produced in strong interactions, provided they are light enough. Within most of the established SUSY models, these particles are too heavy to be produced at a sufficient rate at the Tevatron collider and the production of the lighter super-partners of the Higgs and gauge bosons, the charginos and neutralinos, becomes an important source of SUSY particles. Decays of these particles result in final states with leptons or hadrons and large missing energy. Leptonic final states can be separated more easily from the large background of hadronic Standard Model processes. A search for the associated production of the lightest chargino and the second lightest neutralino has been performed in final states with two electrons, an additional lepton and large missing transverse energy using data collected with the D0 detector from April 2002 to July 2004. The results are interpreted stand-alone and in combination with other leptonic channels in the framework of constraint supersymmetric models.
