Book excerpt: A search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to top quark and $\tau$ lepton pairs is presented using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. The search is performed using events that contain an electron or a muon, a hadronically decaying $\tau$ lepton, and two or more jets. The observations are found to be consistent with the standard model predictions. Assuming that all leptoquarks decay to a top quark and a $\tau$ lepton, the existence of pair produced, charge -1/3, third-generation leptoquarks up to a mass of 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level. This result constitutes the first direct limit for leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a $\tau$ lepton, and may also be applied directly to the pair production of bottom squarks decaying predominantly via the R-parity violating coupling [lambda]' 333.

The search uses events from a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with [arrow]" = 8 TeV. The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the expected standard model background. Third-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses below 740 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction for the leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. In addition, this mass limit applies directly to top squarks decaying via an R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'333. The search also considers a similar signature from top squarks undergoing a chargino-mediated decay involving the R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'3jk. Each top squark decays to a tau lepton, a bottom quark, and two light quarks. Top squarks in this model with masses below 580 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The constraint on the leptoquark mass is the most stringent to date, and this is the first search for top squarks decaying via [lambda]'3jk.

Book excerpt: A search is performed for third-generation scalar leptoquarks and heavy right-handed neutrinos in events containing one electron or muon, one hadronically decaying tau lepton, and at least two jets, using a $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV pp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.9 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016. The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. A limit is set at 95% confidence level on the product of the leptoquark pair production cross section and beta squared where beta is the branching fraction of leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. Assuming beta=1, third-generation leptoquarks with masses below 850 GeV are excluded at 95 % confidence level. An additional search based on the same event topology involves heavy right-handed neutrinos, N[R], and right-handed W bosons, W[R], arising in a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. In this search, W[R] bosons are assumed to decay to a tau lepton and N[R] followed by the decay of the N[R] to a tau lepton and an off-shell W[R] boson. Assuming the mass of the right-handed neutrino to be half of the mass of the right-handed W boson, W[R] boson masses below 2.9 TeV are excluded at 95 % confidence level. These results improve on the limits from previous searches for third-generation leptoquarks and heavy right-handed neutrinos with tau leptons in the final state.

Events with a signature of two heavy flavor jets and missing energy may indicate the decay of a second (third) generation leptoquark to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutrino. As the data is found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations, mass limits are determined.

First-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses less than 1010 (850) GeV are excluded for [beta] = 1.0 (0.5), where b is the branching fraction of a leptoquark decaying to a charged lepton and a quark. Similarly, secondgeneration scalar leptoquarks with masses less than 1080 (760) GeV are excluded for [beta] = 1.0 (0.5). Furthermore, mass limits are also set for vector leptoquark production scenarios with anomalous vector couplings, and for R-parity violating supersymmetric scenarios of top squark pair production resulting in similar final-state signatures. These are the most stringent limits placed on the masses of leptoquarks and RPV top squarks to date.

We review experimental techniques in b physics, focusing on recent results and highlighting future prospects. Particular attention is devoted to recent results from b decays into a hadron, a lepton and an anti-lepton, that show discrepancies with the SM predictions — the so-called B-physics anomalies — whose statistical significance has been increasing steadily. Book excerpt: This dissertation sets new limits on the mass of the scalar leptoquark from direct searches carried out at the Run II CDF detector using data from March 2001 to October 2003. The data analyzed has a total time-integrated measured luminosity of 198 pb[sup -1] of p[bar p] collisions with [radical]s = 1.96 TeV. Leptoquarks are assumed to be pair-produced and to decay into a lepton and a quark of the same generation. They consider two possible leptoquark decays: (1) [beta] = BR(LQ [yields] [mu]q) = 1.0, and (2) [beta] = BR(LQ [yields] [mu]q) = 0.5. For the [beta] = 1 channel, they focus on the signature represented by two isolated high-p[sub T] muons and two isolated high-p[sub T] jets. For the [beta] = 1/2 channel, they focus on the signature represented by one isolated high-p[sub T] muon, large missing transverse energy, and two isolated high-p[sub T] jets. No leptoquark signal is experimentally detected for either signature. Using the next to leading order theoretical cross section for scalar leptoquark production in p[bar p] collisions [1], they set new mass limits on second generation scalar leptoquarks. They exclude the existence of second generation scalar leptoquarks with masses below 221(175) GeV/c[sup 2] for the [beta] = 1(1/2) channels.
