The search is performed in the ll′ = e? and?? final states. No evidence for this process has been found in data samples of approximately 400 pb−1. The domain in the [M({bar t}1), M({bar {nu}})] plane excluded at the 95% C.L. is substantially extended by this search.

Book excerpt: The ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is a particle physics experiment to study fundamental particles and their interactions at very high energies. Supersymmetry is a theory of new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. A search for directly produced pairs of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark was performed using 20 fb^-1 of proton--proton collision data at a centre of mass energy of 8 TeV taken in 2012. The search targeted a model where the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (``scalar top'') decays via the supersymmetric partner of the tau lepton (``scalar tau'') into the supersymmetric partner of the graviton (``gravitino''). Scalar top candidates were searched for in pp collision events with either two hadronically decaying taus, two light leptons (electrons or muons), or one hadronically decaying tau and one light lepton. The numbers of events passing the analysis selection criteria agree with the Standard Model expectations. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level were set as a function of the scalar top and scalar tau masses. Depending on the scalar tau mass, ranging from the 87 GeV limit set by the LEP experiments to a few GeV below the scalar top mass, lower limits between 490 GeV and 640 GeV were placed on the scalar top mass within the model considered.

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents a search for Supersymmetry carried out in a particular scenario arising from the Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry breaking mechanism that assumes a massless gravitino as lightest supersymmetric particle, a scalar tau lepton as next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and the top squark as the lightest among the quark superpartners. The analysis is performed using the data collected by ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 8 TeV during 2012 data taking, for a total of 20.3 fb−1 of integrated luminosity of proton-proton collisions. Scalar top quark candidates are searched for in events with either two light leptons, one hadronically decaying tau and one light lepton or two hadronically decaying taus in the final state. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is found and the results are interpreted as 95% confidence lower limits not top squark and scalar tau masses. Depending on the scalar tau mass, lower limits between 490 and 650 GeV are placed on the top squark mass within the model considered. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the top quark mass (m{sub t}) in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV using t{bar t} events with two leptons (ee, e? or??) in the final state in 4.3 fb−1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We analyze the kinematically underconstrained dilepton events by integrating over the neutrino rapidity distributions. We reduce the dominant systematic uncertainties from jet energy calibration using a correction obtained from t{bar t} → l + jets events. We also correct jets in simulated events to replicate the quark flavor dependence of the jet response in data. In combination with our previous analysis, we measure m{sub t} = 174.0 ± 2.4(stat) ± 1.4(syst) GeV.

The data sample, collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb−1. Candidate events are selected by requiring two or more jets and a large imbalance in the transverse momentum. To enhance the analysis sensitivity, at least one of the jets is required to be identified as originating from a charm quark using an algorithm specifically designed for this analysis. The selected events are in good agreement with standard model predictions. In the case of large mass splitting between the scalar top quark and the neutralino we exclude a scalar top quark mass below 180 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

The search uses events from a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with [arrow]" = 8 TeV. The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the expected standard model background. Third-generation scalar leptoquarks with masses below 740 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction for the leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. In addition, this mass limit applies directly to top squarks decaying via an R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'333. The search also considers a similar signature from top squarks undergoing a chargino-mediated decay involving the R-parity violating coupling [lambda]'3jk. Each top squark decays to a tau lepton, a bottom quark, and two light quarks. Top squarks in this model with masses below 580 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The constraint on the leptoquark mass is the most stringent to date, and this is the first search for top squarks decaying via [lambda]'3jk.

The data sample corresponds to 19.7 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The search targets $ \tilde{t}_1 \to \mathrm{b} \tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_1$ and $ \tilde{t}_1 \to \mathrm{t}^{(*)} \tilde{\chi}^0_1$ decay modes, where $\tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_1$ and $\tilde{\chi}^0_1$ are the lightest chargino and neutralino, respectively. The reconstructed final state consists of jets, b jets, missing transverse energy, and either one or two leptons. Leading backgrounds are determined from data. No significant excess in data is observed above the expectation from standard model processes. The results exclude a region of the two-dimensional plane of possible $ \tilde{t}_1 $ and $\tilde{\chi}^0_1 $ masses. The highest excluded $ \tilde{t}_1 $ and $ \tilde{\chi}^0_1$ masses are about 700 GeV and 250 GeV, respectively.

Book excerpt: Supersymmetric partners of top quarks, stops, will be pair produced at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s= 1.8TeV if kinematically accessible. Within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, the stop quarks are assumed to decay into a lepton, a bottom quark and a supersymmetric neutrino, sneutrino. Thus the experimental signature of stop presence in the data would be two opposite electric charge leptons, hadronic jets and substantial energy imbalance in the detector due to the escaping, undetected sneutrinos. We searched a total of ∫ Ldt = 107.2 pb-1 of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment. No evidence of a stop signal has been found which allows us to calculate a 95% con dence level upper limit on the number of stop-originated events in the data of this size. We have translated this into a 95% con dence level exclusion region in the stop versus sneutrino mass plane.

Book excerpt: We present a search for a new heavy particle M produced in association with a top quark, p{bar p} → t(M → {bar t}q) or p{bar p} → {bar t}({bar M} → t{bar q}), where q stands for up quarks and down quarks. Such a particle may explain the recent anomalous measurements of top-quark forward-backward asymmetry. If the light-flavor quark (q) is reconstructed as a jet (j), this gives a {bar t}+j or t+j resonance in t{bar t}+jet events, a previously unexplored experimental signature. In a sample of events with exactly one lepton, missing transverse momentum and at least five jets, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb−1 collected by the CDF II detector, we find the data to be consistent with the standard model. We set cross-section upper limits on the production (p{bar p} → Mt or {bar M} {bar t}) at 95% confidence level from 0.61 pb to 0.02 pb for M masses ranging from 200 GeV/c2 to 800 GeV/c2, respectively.
