Book excerpt: In July 2012, CERN announced the discovery of the Higgs boson, the last missing piece of the Standard Model (SM). The Higgs boson was observed in different channels. Precise measurement of its properties is now very important to investigate for possible deviations from the SM. This thesis presents a search for the Higgs boson produced in association with top quarks and decaying to a b quark pair, the ttH(H→bb) channel, using proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. This document details in particular the full reconstruction of the ttH(H→bb) system and the discrimination between signal and the main background, tt+jets. The ttbb is a subset of the tt+jets backgrounds recent studies show that there is a large fraction of ttbb events with jets containing two b-hadrons. A new algorithm has been developed to discriminate such jets from single b-hadrons jets. The description of this tool is presented in this thesis.

Book excerpt: In July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations announced the discovery of a new particle at a mass of about 125 GeV, compatible with the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model (SM) ofparticle physics. Although all measurements as of Summer 2015 show a full consistency with the SM predictions, the H->bb decay channel has not been seen yet as clearly as the other decay channels. This thesis presents a search for the Higgs boson in the WH->lvbb channel, using proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV taken with the ATLAS detector in the year 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1. This document details in particular one of the contributions made by the author in this search: the additional analysis region with muon events triggered by missing transverse momentum. An excess over the background-only hypothesis has been found with a significance of 1.8 sigma while 1.5 sigma was expected. The observed (expected) upper limit on the cross-section times branching ratio for WH->lvbb at 95% confidence level is found to be 2.35 (1.37) times the SM prediction at mH = 125 GeV. This search highly relies on the identification of jets originating in b-quark fragmentation, so-called b-tagging. In order to improve the H->bb search and other physics analyses using b-tagging in ATLAS, the development of high performance b-tagging algorithms has been performed and is presented also in this thesis. A new b-tagging algorithm, called MV2, is introduced: it improves the b-tagging performance significantly and is now the baseline b-tagging algorithm in ATLAS for the Run-2 analyses.

Book excerpt: We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with an electroweak vector boson in events with no identified charged leptons, large imbalance in transverse momentum, and two jets where at least one contains a secondary vertex consistent with the decay of b hadrons. We use ≈1 fb−1 integrated luminosity of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron. We find 268 (16) single (double) b-tagged candidate events, where 248 ± 43 (14.4 ± 2.7) are expected from standard model background processes. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section for several Higgs boson masses ranging from 110 GeV/c2 to 140 GeV/c2. For a mass of 115 GeV/c2 the observed (expected) limit is 20.4 (14.2) times the standard model prediction.

Current theoretical and experimental constraints lead to a Higgs boson mass between 114.4 and 158 GeV with 95% confidence level. Moreover, Tevatron has recently excluded the mass ranges between 100 and 109 GeV, 158 and 175 GeV with 95% confidence level. These results gives a clear indication to search for a Higgs boson at low mass. The D0 detector is located near Chicago, at the Tevatron, a proton-antiproton collider with an energy in the center of mass of 1.96 TeV. The topic of this thesis is the search for a Higgs boson in association with a Z boson. This channel is sensitive to low mass Higgs boson (135 GeV) which has a branching ratio H → bb varies between 50% and 90% in this mass range. The decay channel ZH → v$ar{v}$b$ar{b}$ studied has in the final state 2 heavy-flavor jets and some missing transverse energy due to escaping neutrinos. The heavy-flavor jets identification ('b-tagging') is done with a new algorithm (SLTNN) developed specifically for semi-leptonic decay of b quarks. Book excerpt: Abstract: The algorithms used by the ATLAS Collaboration during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider to identify jets containing b-hadrons are presented. The performance of the algorithms is evaluated in the simulation and the efficiency with which these algorithms identify jets containing b-hadrons is measured in collision data. The measurement uses a likelihood-based method in a sample highly enriched in tt ̄ events. The topology of the t→Wb decays is exploited to simultaneously measure both the jet flavour composition of the sample and the efficiency in a transverse momentum range from 20 to 600 GeV. The efficiency measurement is subsequently compared with that predicted by the simulation. The data used in this measurement, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 80.5 fb−1, were collected in proton-proton collisions during the years 2015-2017 at a centre-of-mass energy s√= 13 TeV. By simultaneously extracting both the efficiency and jet flavour composition, this measurement significantly improves the precision compared to previous results, with uncertainties ranging from 1 to 8% depending on the jet transverse momentum

Book excerpt: We present two searches for the Higgs boson in {radical}s = 1.96 TeV p{bar p} collisions using data taken with the D0 detector during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The first study is a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with bottom quarks. The cross sections for these processes are enhanced in many extensions of the standard model (SM), such as in its minimal supersymmetric extension at large tan {beta}. The results of our analysis agree with expectations from the SM, and we use our measurements to set upper limits on the production of neutral Higgs bosons in the mass range of 90 to 150 GeV. The second study is a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with the Z boson. We study the p{bar p} {yields} ZH {yields} {nu}{bar {nu}}b{bar b} channel, which is one of the most sensitive ways to search for light Higgs bosons at the Tevatron. We select multijet events with large imbalance in transverse momentum and two b-tagged jets. Then we search for a peak in invariant mass distribution of two b-tagged jets. After subtracting the backgrounds, we set the 95% C.L. upper limits on the {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} ZH {yields} {nu}{bar {nu}}) x BR(H {yields} b{bar b}) for Higgs masses between 105 and 135 GeV.

This theory is a priori valid for arbitrarily high energy scales and does not require an ultraviolet completion. Yet, when trying to apply the concrete knowledge of quantum field theory to actual LHC physics - in particular to the Higgs sector and certain regimes of QCD - one inevitably encounters an intricate maze of phenomenological know-how, common lore and other, often historically developed intuitions about what works and what doesn’t.
