Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have taken neutrino data with the Narrow Band Beam (NBB) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in the summer and fall of 1985. We are in the process of completing the analysis of the NBB data. In this paper we present preliminary results of this analysis. We observe an anomalous appearance of electron neutrinos above the expected background. 3 refs., 16 figs., 3 tabs.

Book Synopsis Neutrino Oscillations by : Fumihiko Suekane
Download or read book Neutrino Oscillations written by Fumihiko Suekane and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrino oscillation (N.O.) is the only firm evidence of the physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics and is one of the hottest topics in elementary particle physics today. This book focuses on the N.O., from its history to the future prospects, from the basic theories to the experiments. Various phenomena of N.O. are described intuitively with thorough explanations of the fundamental physics behind well-known formulations. For example, while many textbooks start with a discussion of the mixing matrix, this book stresses that N.O. is caused by the transition amplitudes between different neutrino flavors, and that the purpose of N.O. experiments is to measure transition amplitudes and think of its origin. The current understanding of neutrino oscillation is also summarized using the most up-to-date measurements, including the recently measured neutrino mixing angle θ13, and the future prospects of N.O. studies are described as well. The level of this book makes it a bridge between introductory textbooks and scientific papers.
Book Synopsis Experimental Studies of Neutrino Oscillations by : Takaaki Kajita
Download or read book Experimental Studies of Neutrino Oscillations written by Takaaki Kajita and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takaaki Kajita and Arthur McDonald have been jointly awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass". Takaaki Kajita is a Japanese physicist who is well known for neutrino experiments at the Kamiokande and the even more outsized Super-Kamiokande. This volume of collected works of Kajita on neutrino oscillations provides a good glimpse into the rise of Asian research in the frontiers of neutrino physics. Japan is now a major force in the study of the three families of neutrinos. Much remains to be done to clarify the Dirac vs. Majorana nature of the neutrino, and the cosmological implications of the neutrino. The collected works of Kajita and his Super-Kamiokande group will leave an indelible footprint in the history of big and better science. Book Synopsis A Search for Neutrino Oscillations in a Muon Neutrino Beam by : William Patrick Hogan
Download or read book A Search for Neutrino Oscillations in a Muon Neutrino Beam written by William Patrick Hogan and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report on a search for $\nu\sb{\mu}\to\nu\sb{e}$ oscillations using the E776 detector at Brookhaven National Laboratory with Professor T. A. O'Halloran as my advisor. The detector consisted of a large fiducial mass electromagnetic calorimeter followed by a toroidal muon spectrometer and was located 1 km from the target at the AGS. 1.43 $\times$ 10$\sp{19}$ protons on target were collected in the wide band beam with a peak neutrino energy of 1.1 GeV. No evidence for neutrino oscillations was observed. The 90% confidence limits obtained are $\Delta\ m\sp2\leq0.107\ eV\sp2$ for large mixing angle, and sin$\sp2\ 2\theta\leq$ 7.7 $\times$ 10$\sp{-3}$ in the limit of large $\Delta\ m\sp2$.
