Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the \CP-violating parameter \betas using approximately 6500 $\BsJpsiPhi$ decays reconstructed with the CDF\, II detector in a sample of $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV corresponding to 5.2 fb${̂-1}$ integrated luminosity produced by the Tevatron Collider at Fermilab. We find the \CP-violating phase to be within the range $\betas \in [0.02, 0.52] \cup [1.08, 1.55]$ at 68% confidence level where the coverage property of the quoted interval is guaranteed using a frequentist statistical analysis. This result is in agreement with the standard model expectation at the level of about one Gaussian standard deviation. We consider the inclusion of a potential $S$-wave contribution to the $\Bs\to J/\psi K+̂K-̂$ final state which is found to be negligible over the mass interval $1.009

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CP violating phase [beta] j/[Psi][Phi]s is measured in decays of B0s → J/[Psi][Phi]. This measurement uses 5.2 fb-1 of data collected in √s = 1.96 TeV p$\bar{p}$ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF Run-II detector. CP violation in the Bs0-$\bar{B}$s0 system is predicted to be very small in the Standard Model. However, several theories beyond the Standard Model allow enhancements to this quantity by heavier, New Physics particles entering second order weak mixing box diagrams. Previous measurements have hinted at a deviation from the Standard Model expectation value for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] with a significance of approximately 2[sigma]. The measurement described in this thesis uses the highest statistics sample available to date in the Bs0 → J/[Psi][Phi] decay channel, where J/[Psi] → [mu]+[mu]- and [Phi] → K+K-. Furthermore, it contains several improvements over previous analyses, such as enhanced signal selection, fully calibrated particle ID and flavour tagging, and the inclusion of an additional decay component in the likelihood function. The added decay component considers S-wave states of KK pairs in the Bs0 → J/[Psi] K+K- channel. The results are presented as 2-dimensional frequentist confidence regions for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] and [Delta][Gamma] (the width difference between the Bs0 mass eigenstates), and as a confidence interval for [beta]sJ/[Psi][Phi] of [0.02,0.52] U [1.08, 1.55] at the 68% confidence level. The measurement of the CP violating phase obtained in this thesis is complemented by the world's most precise measurement of the lifetime [tau]s = 1.53 ± 0.025 (stat.) ± 0.012 (syst.) ps and decay width difference [Delta][Gamma] = 0.075 ± 0.035 (stat.) ± 0.01 (syst.) ps-1 of the Bs0 meson, with the assumption of no CP violation.

Book excerpt: The B{sub s} meson is an interesting particle to study because a sizable mixing induced CP violation in the B{sub s} -- {bar B}{sub s} system would be an indication for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we present a measurement of the lifetime difference [Delta][Gamma] between the B{sub s} mass eigenstates and the CP violating phase in the decay B{sub s} → J/[psi][phi]. In 1.7 fb−1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron p{bar p} collider we measure [Delta][Gamma] = 0.076{sup +0.059}{sub -0.063} (stat.) ±0.006 (syst.) ps−1, well consistent with the Standard Model prediction, and a mean B{sub s} lifetime of c{sub tau}{sub s} = 456 ± 13 (stat.) ± (syst.) [mu]m. We find no evidence for CP violation.

Book excerpt: The authors measure the mean lifetime, [tau] = 2/([Lambda]{sub L} + [Lambda]{sub H}), and the decay-width difference, [Delta][Lambda] = [Lambda]{sub L} - [Lambda]{sub H}, of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B{sub s}° meson, B{sub sL}° and B{sub sH}°, in B{sub s}° → J/[psi][phi] decays using 1.7 fb−1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} collider. Assuming CP conservation, a good approximation for the B{sub s}° system in the standard model, they obtain [Delta][Lambda] = 0.076{sub -0.063}{sup +0.059}(stat.) ± 0.006(syst.) ps−1 and [tau] = 1.52 ± 0.04(stat.) ± 0.02(syst.) ps, the most precise measurements to date. The constraints on the weak phase and [Delta][Lambda] are consistent with CP conservation.

Book excerpt: In a universe dominated by matter, the source of CP violation may explain one of the greatest mysteries in particle physics: what happened to the antimatter? The Standard Model successfully describes CP violation in the B+ and Bd0 systems, yet insufficiently accounts for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. The Standard Model predicts a small value of CP violation in the Bs0 meson system, which has only recently been experimentally tested. A measurement of large, anomalous CP violation in the Bs0 system would be a clear indication of new physics sources beyond the Standard Model. This dissertation describes a study of CP violation in approximately 2000 Bs0 → J/[Psi][Phi] decays reconstructed in a 2.8 fb-1 data sample collected by the D0 Run II detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This data was provided by p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV delivered by the Tevatron accelerator between April 2002 and August 2007. Flavor-tagged Bs0 → J/[Psi]([mu]+[mu]-)[Phi](K+K-) decays and an angular analysis are used to study the time evolution of the final state angular distributions. From this analysis, we measure the width difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, BsL and BsH , to be [Delta][Gamma]s = 0.19 ± 0.07 and the CP-violating phase [Phi]s = -0.57-0.30+0.24.

We measured the ratio of doubly Cabibbo suppressed or WS (D0 → K+[pi]-) decay rate to Cabibbo favored or RS (D0 → K-[pi]+) decay rate as a function of D0 decay time. We used an integrated luminosity of 4.0 fb-1 of proton anti-proton collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV at the collider detector at Fermilab (CDF II).

This book was released on 2005 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents a measurement of the dipion mass spectrum in the decay X(3872) → J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- using a 360 pb-1 sample of p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. As a benchmark, they also extract the dipion mass distribution for [Psi](2S) → J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- decay. The X(3872) dipion mass spectrum is compared to QCD multipole expansion predictions for various charmonium states, as well as to the hypothesis X(3872) → J/[Psi][rho]0. They find that the measured spectrum is compatible with 3S1 charmonium decaying to J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- and with the X(3872) → J/[Psi][rho]0 hypothesis. There is, however, no 3S1 charmonium state available for assignment to the X(3872). The multipole expansion calculations for 1P1 and 3DJ states are in clear disagreement with the X(3872) data. For the [Psi](2S) the data agrees well with previously published results and to multipole expansion calculations for 3S1 charmonium. Other, non-charmonium, models for the X(3872) are described too. They conclude that since the dipion mass spectrum for X(3872) is compatible with J/[Psi][rho]0 hypothesis, the X(3872) should be C-positive. This conclusion is supported by recent results from Belle Collaboration which observed X(3872) → J/[Psi][gamma] decay. They argue that if X(3872) is a charmonium, then it should be either 1D2± or 23P1++ state, decaying into J/[Psi][pi]+ [pi]- in violation of isospin conservation. A non-charmonium assignment, such as D$\bar{D}$* molecule, is also quite possible.
