Book excerpt: A search is performed for the standard model Higgs boson in 5.2 fb−1 of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The final state considered is a pair of b jets and large missing transverse energy, as expected from p{bar p} → ZH → [nu]{bar [nu]}b{bar b} production. The search is also sensitive to the WH → l{nu}b{bar b} channel when the charged lepton is not identified. For a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV, a limit is set at the 95% C.L. on the cross section multiplied by branching fraction for (p{bar p} → (Z/W)H) x (H → b{bar b}) that is a factor of 3.7 larger than the standard model value, consistent with the factor of 4.6 expected.

Book excerpt: The analysis described in this thesis is the search for the Higgs boson, decaying into bb pair, in the associated production with a vector boson, in the extreme Higgs boson transverse momentum region where the Higgs boson is reconstructed using the large-R jet technique. The use of the large-R jets allows to add a part of the phase space unexplored so far, which is particularly sensitive to possible new physics. The analysed data have been collected at LHC by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV. The same dataset has been used to perform the differential pp → ZH and pp → WH cross-section measurements used to extract the information on the Higgs couplings and to put limits on Beyond the Standard Model effects. Furthermore the analysis has been re-used to perform a cross-section measurement of the diboson ZZ and WZ processes because the diboson and the Higgs processes have a similar topology. For the first time the ZZ(bb) and WZ(bb) cross-sections are measured at √s = 13 TeV and the observed cross-section measurements are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

Book excerpt: This Thesis describes the first measurement of, and constraints on, Higgs boson production in the vector boson fusion mode, where the Higgs decays to b quarks (the most common decay channel), at the LHC. The vector boson fusion mode, in which the Higgs is produced simultaneously with a pair of quark jets, provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the detailed properties of the Higgs, including the possibility of parity and CP violation, as well as its couplings and mass. It thus opens up this new field of study for precision investigation as the LHC increases in energy and intensity, leading the way to this new and exciting arena of precision Higgs research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery in 2012 of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) represents a milestone for the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Most of the SM Higgs production and decay rates have been measured at the LHC with increased precision. However, despite its experimental success, the SM is known to be only an effective manifestation of a more fundamental description of nature. The scientific research at the LHC is strongly focused on extending the SM by searching, directly or indirectly, for indications of New Physics. The extensive physics program requires increasingly advanced computational and algorithmic techniques. In the last decades, Machine Learning (ML) methods have made a prominent appearance in the field of particle physics, and promise to address many challenges faced by the LHC. This thesis presents the analysis that led to the observation of the SM Higgs boson decay into pairs of bottom quarks. The analysis exploits the production of a Higgs boson associated with a vector boson whose signatures enable efficient triggering and powerful background reduction. The main strategy to maximise the signal sensitivity is based on a multivariate approach. The analysis is performed on a dataset corresponding to a luminosity of 79.8/fb collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run-2 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. An excess of events over the expected background is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.9 (4.3) standard deviation. A combination with results from other \Hbb searches provides an observed (expected) significance of 5.4 (5.5). The corresponding ratio between the signal yield and the SM expectation is 1.01 +- 0.12 (stat.)+ 0.16-0.15(syst.). The 'observation' analysis was further extended to provide a finer interpretation of the V H(H → bb) signal measurement. The cross sections for the VH production times the H → bb branching ratio have been measured in exclusive regions of phase space. These measurements are used to search for possible deviations from the SM with an effective field theory approach, based on anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson. The results of the cross-section measurements, as well as the constraining of the operators that affect the couplings of the Higgs boson to the vector boson and the bottom quarks, have been documented and discussed in this thesis. This thesis also describes a novel technique for the fast simulation of the forward calorimeter response, based on similarity search methods. Such techniques constitute a branch of ML and include clustering and indexing methods that enable quick and efficient searches for vectors similar to each other. The new simulation approach provides optimal results in terms of detector resolution response and reduces the computational requirements of a standard particles simulation.

Book excerpt: In July 2012, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations announced the discovery of a new particle at a mass of about 125 GeV, compatible with the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model (SM) ofparticle physics. Although all measurements as of Summer 2015 show a full consistency with the SM predictions, the H->bb decay channel has not been seen yet as clearly as the other decay channels. This thesis presents a search for the Higgs boson in the WH->lvbb channel, using proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV taken with the ATLAS detector in the year 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1. This document details in particular one of the contributions made by the author in this search: the additional analysis region with muon events triggered by missing transverse momentum. An excess over the background-only hypothesis has been found with a significance of 1.8 sigma while 1.5 sigma was expected. The observed (expected) upper limit on the cross-section times branching ratio for WH->lvbb at 95% confidence level is found to be 2.35 (1.37) times the SM prediction at mH = 125 GeV. This search highly relies on the identification of jets originating in b-quark fragmentation, so-called b-tagging. In order to improve the H->bb search and other physics analyses using b-tagging in ATLAS, the development of high performance b-tagging algorithms has been performed and is presented also in this thesis. A new b-tagging algorithm, called MV2, is introduced: it improves the b-tagging performance significantly and is now the baseline b-tagging algorithm in ATLAS for the Run-2 analyses.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard model of particle physics provides a detailed description of a universe in which all matter is composed of a small number of fundamental particles, which interact through the exchange of force - carrying gauge bosons (the photon, W{sup ±}, Z and gluons). The organization of the matter and energy in this universe is determined by the effects of three forces; the strong, weak, and electromagnetic. The weak and electromagnetic forces are the low energy manifestations of a single electro-weak force, while the strong force binds quarks into protons and neutrons. The standard model does not include gravity, as the effect of this force on fundamental particles is negligible. Four decades of experimental tests, spanning energies from a few electron-volts (eV) up to nearly two TeV, confirm that the universe described by the standard model is a reasonable approximation of our world. For example, experiments have confirmed the existence of the top quark, the W{sup ±} and the Z bosons, as predicted by the standard model. The latest experimental averages for the masses of the top quark, W{sup ±} and Z are respectively 173.1 ± 0.6(stat.) {+-} 1.1(syst.), 80.399 {+-} 0.023 and 91.1876 {+-} 0.0021 GeV/c2. The SM is a gauge field theory of zero mass particles. However, the SM is able to accommodate particles with non-zero mass through the introduction of a theoretical Higgs field which permeates all of space. Fermions gain mass through interactions with this field, while the longitudinal components of the massive W{sup {+-}} and Z are the physical manifestations of the field itself. Introduction of the Higgs field, directly leads to the predicted existence of an additional particle, the Higgs boson. The Higgs boson is the only particle of the standard model that has not been observed, and is the only unconfirmed prediction of the theory. The standard model describes the properties of the Higgs boson in terms of its mass, which is a free parameter in the theory. Experimental evidence suggests that the Higgs mass has a value between 114.4 and 186 GeV/c2. Particles with a mass in this range can be produced in collisions of less massive particles accelerated to near the speed of light. Currently, one of only a few machines capable of achieving collision energies large enough to potentially produce a standard model Higgs boson is the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider located at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. This dissertation describes the effort to observe the standard model Higgs in Tevatron collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) II experiment in the ZH --> ll−b{bar b} production and decay channel. In this process, the Higgs is produced along with a Z boson which decays to a pair of electrons or muons (Z --> ll−), while the Higgs decays to a bottom anti-bottom quark pair (H --> b{bar b}). A brief overview of the standard model and Higgs theory is presented in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 explores previous searches for the standard model Higgs at the Tevatron and elsewhere. The search presented in this dissertation expands upon the techniques and methods developed in previous searches. The fourth chapter contains a description of the Tevatron collider and the CDF II detector. The scope of the discussion in Chapter 4 is limited to the experimental components relevant to the current ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} search. Chapter 5 presents the details of object reconstruction; the methods used to convert detector signals into potential electrons, muons or quarks. Chapter six describes the data sample studied for the presence of a ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} signal and details the techniques used to model the data. The model accounts for both signal and non-signal processes (backgrounds) which are expected to contribute to the observed event sample. Chapters 7 and 8 summarize the event selection applied to isolate ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} candidate events from the data sample, and the advanced techniques employed to maximize the separation of the signal from background processes. Chapters 9 and 10 present the systematic uncertainties affecting our modeling of the data sample and the results of the search. Chapter 11 presents a discussion of ZH --> l+l−b{bar b} in the context of the overall Tevatron efforts to observe a standard model Higgs signal.

Book excerpt: Search for ZH → [mu]+[mu]-b$\bar{b}$ is presented, using a Run 2 dataset with an integrated luminosity of 9.7 fb-1 collected by the DØ detector. Selected events contain at least two reconstructed jets and a Z candidate reconstructed with two opposite-sign charged muons. Random forests of decision trees are trained to distinguish between signal and background events in two orthogonal b-tag samples. The ZH → [mu]+[mu]-b$\bar{b}$b analysis is then combined with ZH → e+e-b$\bar{b}$ analysis. For the combined results of ZH → l+l-b$\bar{b}$b, no Higgs signal is observed, limits are set on the ZH cross-section BR(H→ b$\bar{b}$) for different Higgs masses, from 90 to 150 GeV. For a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV, the observed cross-section limit is 7.1 times the SM cross-section with an expected sensitivity of 5.1 times the SM cross section. The result of ZH → l+l-b$\bar{b}$b channel has been combined with searches in other Higgs decay channels at the Tevatron, which led to the first evidence of H → b$\bar{b}$.

Book excerpt: The search for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson in the diphoton final state is performed with 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ data taken at $\sqrt{s} = $7 TeV in 2011 and 5.9 fb$^{-1}$ data taken at $\sqrt{s} = $8 TeV from March to June in 2012. An excess of diphoton events at around 126.5 GeV, with a statistical significance of 4.5 $\sigma$, is observed. This excess, combined with excesses observed in the search for SM $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(\star)} \rightarrow 4l$ and the search for SM \lvlv, leads to an excess at around 126 GeV in the combination of SM Higgs boson searches with a statistical significance of 5.9 $\sigma$ that establishes the discovery of a new boson announced by the ATLAS collaboration in July, 2012. With the full LHC data sample taken in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ data at $\sqrt{s} = $7 TeV and 20.7 fb$^{-1}$ data at $\sqrt{s} = $8 TeV, the statistical significance of the diphoton excess reaches 7.4 $\sigma$. The observation in the diphoton final state by itself can establish the discovery of the new boson. The mass of the new boson measured in the diphoton final state is 126.8 $\pm$ 0.4(stat.) $\pm$ 0.8(syst.) GeV, and the signal strength of this excess is 1.57 $^{+0.32}_{-0.28}$ times the SM Higgs boson expectation at 126.8 GeV. The mass of the new boson measured from a combination of the $H \rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ channel and $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(\star)} \rightarrow 4l$ channel is 125.5 $\pm 0.2$ (stat) $^{+0.5}_{-0.6}$ (sys) GeV, and the signal strength of $H \rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ measured at this mass is $1.55 ^{+0.33}_{-0.28}$ times the SM Higgs boson expectation.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the stand-alone discovery and measurement of the Higgs boson in its decays to two W bosons using the Run-I ATLAS dataset. This is the most precise measurement of gluon-fusion Higgs boson production and is among the most significant results attained at the LHC. The thesis provides an exceptionally clear exposition on a complicated analysis performed by a large team of researchers. Aspects of the analysis performed by the author are explained in detail; these include new methods for evaluating uncertainties on the jet binning used in the analysis and for estimating the background due to associated production of a W boson and an off-shell photon. The thesis also describes a measurement of the WW cross section, an essential background to Higgs boson production. The primary motivation of the LHC was to prove or disprove the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2012, CERN announced this discovery and the resultant ATLAS publication contained three decay channels: gg, ZZ, and WW.
