Book excerpt: A search for neutral Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) decaying to tau-lepton pairs in pp collisions is performed, using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 24.6 fb−1, with 4.9 fb−1 at 7 TeV and 19.7 fb−1 at 8 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes the case where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a b-quark jet. No excess is observed in the tau-lepton-pair invariant mass spectrum. Exclusion limits are presented in the MSSM parameter space for different benchmark scenarios, mhmax, mhmod+, mhmod-, light-stop, light-stau, [tau]-phobic, and low-mH. Upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for gluon fusion and b-quark associated Higgs boson production are also given.

This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the interaction between the Higgs boson and the top quark is studied with the proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV provided by the LHC at the CMS detector at CERN (Geneva). At the LHC, these particles are produced simultaneously via the associate production of the Higgs boson with one top quark (tH process) or two top quarks (ttH process). Compared to many other possible outcomes of the proton-proton interactions, these processes are very rare, as the top quark and the Higgs boson are the heaviest elementary particles known. Hence, identifying them constitutes a significant experimental challenge. A high particle selection efficiency in the CMS detector is therefore crucial. At the core of this selection stands the Level-1 (L1) trigger system, a system that filters collision events to retain only those with potential interest for physics analysis. The selection of hadronically decaying τ leptons, expected from the Higgs boson decays, is especially demanding due to the large background arising from the QCD interactions. The first part of this thesis presents the optimization of the L1 τ algorithm in Run 2 (2016-2018) and Run 3 (2022-2024) of the LHC. It includes the development of a novel trigger concept for the High-Luminosity LHC, foreseen to start in 2027 and to deliver 5 times the current instantaneous luminosity. To this end, sophisticated algorithms based on machine learning approaches are used, facilitated by the increasingly modern technology and powerful computation of the trigger system. The second part of the work presents the search of the tH and ttH processes with the subsequent decays of the Higgs boson to pairs of τ lepton, W bosons or Z bosons, making use of the data recorded during Run 2. The presence of multiple particles in the final state, along with the low cross section of the processes, makes the search an ideal use case for multivariant discriminants that enhance the selectivity of the signals and reject the overwhelming background contributions. The discriminants presented are built using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, able to capture the correlations amongst the processes involved, as well as the so-called Matrix Element Method (MEM), which combines the theoretical description of the processes with the detector resolution effects. The level of sophistication of the methods used, along with the unprecedented amount of collision data analyzed, result in the most stringent measurements of the tH and ttH cross sections up to date.

The search is performed on proton collision data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid at the Large Hadron Collider. The data corresponds to 4.9 fb-1 of proton collisions at [square root of]s = 7 TeV and 19.5 fb-1 at [square root of]s = 8 TeV. The search is based on di-tau events in which one tau decays into an electron or muon, and the other tau decays into hadrons. The search focuses on Higgs masses between 110 GeV and 145 GeV. The analysis reveals no statistically significant excess in the data over the Standard Model backgrounds. Upper limits on the Higgs production cross section at the 95% confidence level are established. The observed limit is statistically consistent with the expected limit in the background-only hypothesis but does not exclude any Higgs mass.

Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis spans a wide range of experimental particle physics subjects, starting from level-1 trigger electronics to the final results of the search for Higgs boson decay and to tau lepton pairs. The thesis describes an innovative reconstruction algorithm for tau decays and details how it was instrumental in providing a measurement of Z decay to tau lepton pairs. The reliability of the analysis is fully established by this measurement before the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs is considered. The work described here continues to serve as a model for analysing CMS Higgs to tau leptons measurements.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents innovative contributions to the CMS experiment in the new trigger system for the restart of the LHC collisions in Run II, as well as original analysis methods and important results that led to official publications of the Collaboration. The author's novel reconstruction algorithms, deployed on the Field-Programmable Gate Arrays of the new CMS trigger architecture, have brought a gain of over a factor 2 in efficiency for the identification of tau leptons, with a very significant impact on important H boson measurements, such as its decays to tau lepton pairs and the search for H boson pair production. He also describes a novel analysis of HH → bb tautau, a high priority physics topic in a difficult channel. The original strategy, optimisation of event categories, and the control of the background have made the result one of the most sensitive concerning the self-coupling of the Higgs boson among all possible channels at the LHC.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study of the scalar sector in the standard model (SM), as well as various searches for an extended scalar sector in theories beyond the SM (BSM). The first part of the thesis details the search for an SM Higgs boson decaying to taus, and produced by gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, or associated production with a vector boson, leading to evidence for decays of the Higgs boson to taus. In turn, the second part highlights several searches for an extended scalar sector, with scalar boson decays to taus. In all of the analyses presented, at least one scalar boson decays to a pair of taus. The results draw on data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector during proton–proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 or 8 TeV.

Book excerpt: A search for a standard model Higgs boson decaying into a pair of tau leptons is performed using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 inverse femtobarns at 8 TeV. Each tau lepton decays hadronically or leptonically to an electron or a muon, leading to six different final states for the tau-lepton pair, all considered in this analysis. An excess of events is observed over the expected background contributions, with a local significance larger than 3 standard deviations for m[H] values between 115 and 130 GeV. The best fit of the observed H to tau tau signal cross section for m[H] = 125 GeV is 0.78 +- 0.27 times the standard model expectation. These observations constitute evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying to a pair of tau leptons.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson which decays to a pair of [tau] leptons is presented in this thesis using 35.9 f b−1 of 13 TeV data collected in 2016 by the CMS detector at CERN. The final states considered require that (1) one [tau] lepton decays leptonically while the other decays hadronically ([mu][tau]h or e[tau]h), (2) both taus decay hadronically ([tau]h[tau]h) or (3) one tau lepton decays to an electron while the other decays to a muon (e[mu]). This thesis specifically focuses on the details of the semi-hadronic decay channels ([mu][tau]h and e[tau]h), and presents the results of all channels combined. The signal strength, [mu], relative to the expectation for the SM Higgs boson is measured to be [mu] = 1.09+0.27−0.24. An excess is observed (expected) corresponding to 4.9 (4.7) [sigma] using 2016 data. The observed (expected) significance reaches 5.9 (5.9) [sigma] when combined with 7 and 8 TeV data collected at CMS. Subsequently following the SM search, a search for dark matter (DM) is presented and interpreted in two simplified Higgs-portal models: a baryonic dark matter model and a two Higgs-doublet model. In this thesis, the Higgs boson is required to decay to an opposite- sign tau pair. The tau pair final states considered are e[tau]h, [mu][tau]h, and [tau]h[tau]h. The expected 95% confidence level upper limits are produced and compared with the observed limit. No significant deviations beyond the SM prediction are observed.

Leon Lederman embraces this spirit of inquiry as he moves from the Greeks' earliest scientific observations to Einstein and beyond to chart this unique arm of scientific study. His survey concludes with the Higgs boson, nicknamed the God Particle, which scientists hypothesize will help unlock the last secrets of the subatomic universe, quarks and all--it's the dogged pursuit of this almost mystical entity that inspires Lederman's witty and accessible history.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a 5.5 standard deviation observation of the Higgs boson decaying to fermions using the data collected at the LHC at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy. The studied dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 inverse femtobarns. The best fit signal strength for the H to tau tau process is measured to be mu = 1.24 ^{+0.29}/{-0.27}, consistent with standard model predictions. Unique event categories are used targeting the leading Higgs boson production processes, gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production. This provides signal regions sensitive to Higgs boson couplings to both fermions and vector bosons. These two Higgs boson couplings are measured and are consistent with standard model predictions within one standard deviation. This 5.5 standard deviation observation of the H to tau tau process and the consistency of the Higgs boson couplings with the standard model provide confirmation of the Higgs boson Yukawa couplings to fermions. This is evidence that the Higgs field provides mass for the tau lepton in addition to the vector bosons.

Book excerpt: A search for a very light Higgs boson decaying into a pair of tau leptons is presented within the framework of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model(NMSSM). This search is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 and 2.5 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and 13 TeV respectively. The signal consists of the production of either of the two lightest scalars, h1 or h2, via gluon-gluon fusion and subsequent decay into a pair of the lightest Higgs bosons, a1 or h1. The h1 or h2 boson is identified with the observed state at a mass of 125 GeV. The analysis searches for decays of the a1(h1) states into pairs of tau leptons and covers a mass range for the a1(h1) boson of 4 to 15 GeV. The search reveals no significant excess in data above standard model background expectations, and an upper limit is set on the signal production cross section times branching fraction as a function of the a 1(h1) boson mass.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first direct search for lepton flavor violating decays of the recently discovered Higgs boson. The search is performed in the $H \rightarrow \mu \tau_{e}$ and $H \rightarrow \mu \tau_{h}$ decay channels, where $\tau_{e}$ and $\tau_{h}$ denote the electronic and hadronic tau decay channels respectively. The search is performed using the proton-proton collisions data gathered at the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search uses 19.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV data taken in 2012 as well as 2.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV data taken in 2015. The limits on the branching fraction $B(H\rightarrow \mu\tau)$ are measured, and the existing limits from indirect searches are reduced by an order of magnitude. This thesis also presents a measurement of the differential cross section of a W boson produced in associated with jets. This measurement was performed with 2.5 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and recorded at the Compact Muon Solenoid detector. Cross sections are computed as a function of jet multiplicity, and the results are compared to theoretical predictions from leading order and next-to-leading order Monte Carlo generators.
