Book excerpt: A search for a massive resonance decaying into a standard-model-like Higgs boson (H) and a W or Z boson is reported. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb–1, collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. Signal events, in which the decay products of Higgs, W, or Z bosons at high Lorentz boost are contained within single reconstructed jets, are identified using jet substructure techniques, including the tagging of b hadrons. This is the first search for heavy resonances decaying in HW or HZ resulting in an all-jet final state, as well as the first application of jet substructure techniques to identify H → WW* → 4q decays at high Lorentz boost. Furthermore, no significant signal is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross section of W' and Z' in a model with mass-degenerate charged and neutral spin-1 resonances.

Book excerpt: In this study, a search for a massive resonance ${\mathrm{W}^{\prime }}$ decaying into a W and a Higgs boson in the $\ell \nu \mathrm{b} \overline{\mathrm{b}} $ ($\ell = \mathrm {e}$, $\mu $) final state is presented. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 $\, \text {fb}^{{-1}}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ $~\text {TeV}$, collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. For a high-mass ($\gtrsim $ 1 $~\text {TeV}$) resonance, the two bottom quarks coming from the Higgs boson decay are reconstructed as a single jet, which can be tagged by placing requirements on its substructure and flavour. Exclusion limits at 95 % confidence level are set on the production cross section of a narrow resonance decaying into WH, as a function of its mass. In the context of a little Higgs model, a lower limit on the ${\mathrm{W}^{\prime }}$ mass of 1.4 $~\text {TeV}$ is set. In a heavy vector triplet model that mimics the properties of composite Higgs models, a lower limit on the ${\mathrm{W}^{\prime }}$ mass of 1.5 $~\text {TeV}$ is set. In the context of this model, the results are combined with related searches to obtain a lower limit on the ${\mathrm{W}^{\prime }}$ mass of 1.8 $~\text {TeV}$, the most restrictive to date for decays to a pair of standard model bosons.

Book excerpt: A search is presented for new massive resonances decaying to WW, WZ or ZZ bosons in l nu quark anti-quark and quark anti-quark quark anti-quark final states. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3-2.7 inverse femtobarns recorded in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. Decays of spin-1 and spin-2 resonances into two vector bosons are sought in the mass range 0.6-4.0 TeV. No significant excess over the standard model background is observed. Combining the results of the l nu quark anti-quark and quark anti-quark quark anti-quark final states, cross section and mass exclusion limits are set for models that predict heavy spin-1 and spin-2 resonances. This is the first search for a narrow-width spin-2 resonance at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for a narrow, high-mass resonance decaying into Z and Higgs (H) bosons is presented. The final state studied consists of a merged jet pair and a ? pair resulting from the decays of Z and H bosons, respectively. This analysis is based on a data sample of proton–proton collisions at a center-ofmass energy of 8 TeV, collected with the CMS experiment in 2012, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. In the resonance mass range of interest, which extends from 0.8 to 2.5 TeV, the Z and H bosons are produced with large momenta, which implies that the final products of the two quarks or the two ? leptons must be detected within a small angular interval. A combination of all possible decay modes of the ? leptons, production cross sections in a range between 0.9 and 27.8 fb are excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on the resonance mass.

Book excerpt: A search is presented for narrow heavy resonances X decaying into pairs of Higgs bosons (H) in proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at sqrt(s)=8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The search considers HH resonances with masses between 1 and 3 TeV, having final states of two b quark pairs. Each Higgs boson is produced with large momentum, and the hadronization products of the pair of b quarks can usually be reconstructed as single large jets. The background from multijet and t-tbar events is significantly reduced by applying requirements related to the flavor of the jet, its mass, and its substructure. The signal would be identified as a peak on top of the dijet invariant mass spectrum of the remaining background events. No evidence is observed for such a signal. Upper limits obtained at 95% confidence level for the product of the production cross section and branching fraction sigma(gg to X) B(X to HH to b-bbar b-bbar) range from 10 to 1.5 fb for the mass of X from 1.15 to 2.0 TeV, significantly extending previous searches. For a warped extra dimension theory with a mass scale Lambda[R] = 1 TeV, the data exclude radion scalar masses between 1.15 and 1.55 TeV.

Book excerpt: A search for massive resonances decaying to a Z boson and a photon is performed in events with a hadronically decaying Z boson candidate, separately in light-quark and b quark decay modes, identified using jet substructure and advanced b tagging techniques. Results are based on samples of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 2.7 inverse femtobarns, respectively. The results of the search are combined with those of a similar search in the leptonic decay modes of the Z boson, based on the same data sets. Spin-0 resonances with various widths and with masses in a range between 0.2 and 3.0 TeV are considered. No significant excess is observed either in the individual analyses or the combination. The results are presented in terms of upper limits on the production cross section of such resonances and constitute the most stringent limits to date for a wide range of masses.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our search for new resonances decaying to WW, ZZ, or WZ is presented. Final states are considered in which one of the vector bosons decays leptonically and the other hadronically. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 recorded in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Techniques aiming at identifying jet substructures are used to analyze signal events in which the hadronization products from the decay of highly boosted W or Z bosons are contained within a single reconstructed jet. Upper limits on the production of generic WW, ZZ, or WZ resonances are set as a function of the resonance mass and width. We also increase the sensitivity of the analysis by statistically combining the results of this search with a complementary study of the all-hadronic final state. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the bulk graviton production cross section in the range from 700 to 10 fb for resonance masses between 600 and 2500 GeV, respectively. These limits on the bulk graviton model are the most stringent to date in the diboson final state.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a search for new heavy resonances decaying to a pair of Higgs bosons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016--2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. Resonances with a mass between 0.8 and 4.5 TeV are considered using events in which one Higgs boson decays into a bottom quark pair and the other into final states with either one or two charged leptons. Specifically, the single-lepton decay channel $\mathrm{HH} \to \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} \mathrm{WW}^* \to \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} \ell \nu \mathrm{q}\bar{\mathrm{q}}$ and the dilepton decay channels $\mathrm{HH} \to \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} \mathrm{WW}^* \to \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} \ell \nu \ell \nu$ and $\mathrm{HH} \to \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} \tau\tau \to \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}} \ell \nu \nu \ell \nu \nu$ are examined. The signal is extracted using a two-dimensional maximum likelihood fit of the $\mathrm{H}\to\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}$ jet mass and HH invariant mass distributions. No significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed in data. Model-independent exclusion limits are placed on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for narrow spin-0 and spin-2 massive bosons decaying to HH. The results provide the most stringent limits to date for $\mathrm{X}\to\mathrm{HH}$ signatures with final-state leptons and at some masses provide the most sensitive limits of all $\mathrm{X}\to\mathrm{HH}$ searches.

Book excerpt: This paper describes the search for a high-mass narrow-width scalar particle decaying into a Z boson and a photon. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 2.7 inverse femtobarns, respectively. Book excerpt: A search is performed in proton–proton collisions at √s=8 TeV for exotic particles decaying via WZ to fully leptonic final states with electrons, muons, and neutrinos. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1. No significant excess is observed above the expected standard model background. Upper bounds at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of a W' boson as predicted by an extended gauge model, and on the W'WZ coupling. The expected and observed mass limits for a W' boson, as predicted by this model, are 1.55 and 1.47 TeV, respectively. Stringent limits are also set in the context of low-scale technicolor models under a range of assumptions for the model parameters.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the LHC proton-proton collision data at an energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector, this analysis searches for the production of a new particle W' with a yet-to-be-probed mass in the top quark plus bottom quark decay channel. The boosted and hadronically decaying top-quark is reconstructed as a large-radius jet and identified using jet substructures. A secondary-vertex finding algorithm identifies small-radius jets originating from a bottom quark. After the identification stage, the main background events come from the Quantum Chromodynamical production of multi-jet, which is estimated by a data-driven approach. The statistical data analysis searches for a resonant peak in the invariant mass distribution of the system with a jet associated with the top quark and another with the bottom quark. The consistency between data and the background prediction is found in the invariant mass range between 1 TeV to 7 TeV, and an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on the production cross-section times branching ratio for a W' boson with right-handed chirality decaying to a top quark and a bottom quark. A lower limit on the W' mass is set at 4.4 TeV accordingly.
