Book excerpt: We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into pairs of? leptons in p{bar p} collisions produced by the Tevatron at √s = 1.96 TeV. The analyzed data sample was recorded by the CDFII detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 6.0 fb−1. The search is performed in the final state with one? decaying leptonically and the second one identified through its semi-hadronic decay. Since no significant excess is observed, a 95% credibility level upper limit on the production cross section times branching ratio to the?? final state is set for hypothetical Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV/c2. For a Higgs boson of 120 GeV/c2 the observed (expected) limit is 14.6 (15.3) the predicted value.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson decaying to tau lepton pairs, in the Tevatron proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV. The search is based on approximately 2.3 fb$^{-1}$ of CDF Run II data and is performed by considering the following signal processes: WH($\rightarrow\tau\tau$), ZH($\rightarrow\tau\tau$), qHq'$\rightarrow$q$\tau\tau$q' and gg$\rightarrow$H$\rightarrow\tau\tau$. Events are selected by requiring an hadronic tau and one isolated electron or muon, coming from the leptonic decay of one of the two taus. In addition, at least one calorimeter jet must be present in the final state. We expect 921.8$\pm$48.9 background events in the 1 jet channel and 159.4$\pm$11.6 in the $\ge$ 2 jets channel, while in data we observe 965 and 166 events, respectively. In order to improve the search sensitivity we employ a multivariate technique, based on a set of Boosted Decision Trees trained to get the best sep aration between signal and the dominant sources of background. We observe no evidence for a Higgs boson signal and therefore we set a 95\% confidence level (C.L.) upper limit on the cross section relative to the SM predictions ($\sigma/\sigma_{\mathrm{SM}}$). Results are presented for the Higgs boson mass varying from M$_\mathrm{H}$ = 100 GeV/$c^2$ to M$_\mathrm{H}$ = 150 GeV/$c^2$. For the mass hypothesis of 120 GeV/c$^2$ the observed limit is 27.2, while the corresponding expected value is 23.4$^{+9.8}_{-6.4}$.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in the H --> rr channel is presented. The search is performed on proton collision data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid at the Large Hadron Collider. The data corresponds to 4.9 fb-1 of proton collisions at [square root of]s = 7 TeV and 19.5 fb-1 at [square root of]s = 8 TeV. The search is based on di-tau events in which one tau decays into an electron or muon, and the other tau decays into hadrons. The search focuses on Higgs masses between 110 GeV and 145 GeV. The analysis reveals no statistically significant excess in the data over the Standard Model backgrounds. Upper limits on the Higgs production cross section at the 95% confidence level are established. The observed limit is statistically consistent with the expected limit in the background-only hypothesis but does not exclude any Higgs mass.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study of the scalar sector in the standard model (SM), as well as various searches for an extended scalar sector in theories beyond the SM (BSM). The first part of the thesis details the search for an SM Higgs boson decaying to taus, and produced by gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, or associated production with a vector boson, leading to evidence for decays of the Higgs boson to taus. In turn, the second part highlights several searches for an extended scalar sector, with scalar boson decays to taus. In all of the analyses presented, at least one scalar boson decays to a pair of taus. The results draw on data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector during proton–proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 or 8 TeV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combined results are reported from searches for the standard model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV in five Higgs boson decay modes: gamma pair, b-quark pair, tau lepton pair, W pair, and Z pair. The explored Higgs boson mass range is 110-600 GeV. The analysed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6-4.8 inverse femtobarns. The expected excluded mass range in the absence of the standard model Higgs boson is 118-543 GeV at 95% CL. The observed results exclude the standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 127-600 GeV at 95% CL, and in the mass range 129-525 GeV at 99% CL. An excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed at the low end of the explored mass range making the observed limits weaker than expected in the absence of a signal. The largest excess, with a local significance of 3.1 sigma, is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-600 (110-145) GeV is estimated to be 1.5 sigma (2.1 sigma). More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess.

Book excerpt: A search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons in pp collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns recorded by the CMS experiment. The search uses decays of the Higgs bosons to tau pairs. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum. The resulting upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to tau pairs, as a function of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass, yield stringent new bounds in the MSSM parameter space.

Book excerpt: A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two Z bosons with subsequent decay into a final state containing two quark jets and two leptons, H to ZZ(*) to q q-bar l-l+ is presented. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. In order to discriminate between signal and background events, kinematic and topological quantities, including the angular spin correlations of the decay products, are employed. Events are further classified according to the probability of the jets to originate from quarks of light or heavy flavor or from gluons. No evidence for the Higgs boson is found, and upper limits on its production cross section are determined for a Higgs boson of mass between 130 and 600 GeV.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the nature and principles of the universe and our place in it is the driving force of science since Mesopotamian astronomers glanced for the first time at the starry sky and Greek atomism has been formulated. During the last hundred years modern science was able to extend its knowledge tremendously, answering many questions, opening entirely new fields but as well raising many new questions. Particularly Astronomy, Astroparticle Physics and Particle Physics lead the race to answer these fundamental and ancient questions experimentally. Today it is known that matter consists of fermions, the quarks and leptons. Four fundamental forces are acting between these particles, the electromagnetic, the strong, the weak and the gravitational force. These forces are mediated by particles called bosons. Our confirmed knowledge of particle physics is based on these particles and the theory describing their dynamics, the Standard Model of Particles. Many experimental measurements show an excellent agreement between observation and theory but the origin of the particle masses and therefore the electroweak symmetry breaking remains unexplained. The mechanism proposed to solve this issue involves the introduction of a complex doublet of scalar fields which generates the masses of elementary particles via their mutual interactions. This Higgs mechanism also gives rise to a single neutral scalar boson with an unpredicted mass, the Higgs boson. During the last twenty years several experiments have searched for the Higgs boson but so far it escaped direct observation. Nevertheless these studies allow to further constrain its mass range. The last experimental limits on the Higgs mass have been set in 2001 at the LEP collider, an electron positron machine close to Geneva, Switzerland. The lower limit set on the Higgs boson mass is m{sub H}> 114.4 GeV/c2 and remained for many years the last experimental constraint on the Standard Model Higgs Boson due to the shutdown of the LEP collider and the experimental challenges at hadron machines as the Tevatron. This thesis was performed using data from the D0 detector located at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. Final states containing two electrons or a muon and a tau in combination with missing transverse energy were studied to search for the Standard Model Higgs boson, utilizing up to 4.2 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. In 2008 the CDF and D0 experiments in a combined effort were able to reach for the first time at a hadron collider the sensitivity to further constrain the possible Standard Model Higgs boson mass range. The research conducted for this thesis played a pivotal role in this effort. Improved methods for lepton identification, background separation, assessment of systematic uncertainties and new decay channels have been studied, developed and utilized. Along with similar efforts at the CDF experiment these improvements led finally the important result of excluding the presence of a Standard Model Higgs boson in a mass range of m{sub H} = 160-170 GeV/c2 at 95% Confidence Level. Many of the challenges and methods found in the present analysis will probably in a similar way be ingredients of a Higgs boson evidence or discovery in the near future, either at the Tevatron or more likely at the soon starting Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Continuing to pursue the Higgs boson we are looking forward to many exciting results at the Tevatron and soon at the LHC. In Chapter 2 an introduction to the Standard Model of particle physics and the Higgs mechanism is given, followed by a brief outline of existing theoretical and experimental constraints on the Higgs boson mass before summarizing the Higgs boson production modes. Chapter 3 gives an overview of the experimental setup. This is followed by a description of the reconstruction of the objects produced in proton-antiproton collisions in Chapter 4 and the necessary calorimeter calibrations in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 follows with an explanation of the phenomenology of the proton-antiproton collisions and the data samples used. In Chapter 7 the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson using a di-electron final state is discussed, followed by the analysis of the final states using muons and hadronic decaying taus in Chapter 8. Finally a short outlook for the prospects of Higgs boson searches is given in Chapter 9.

The analysis is performed on data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The samples used for this search were collected in 2012 and correspond to integrated luminosities in the range 19.5-20.3 fb-1. The MSSM Higgs bosons are searched for in the [tau] [tau] final state. No significant excess over the expected background is observed, and exclusion limits are derived for the production cross section times branching fraction of a scalar particle as a function of its mass. The results are also interpreted in the MSSM parameter space for various benchmark scenarios.

Book excerpt: The work presented in this thesis spans a wide range of experimental particle physics subjects, starting from level-1 trigger electronics to the final results of the search for Higgs boson decay and to tau lepton pairs. The thesis describes an innovative reconstruction algorithm for tau decays and details how it was instrumental in providing a measurement of Z decay to tau lepton pairs. The reliability of the analysis is fully established by this measurement before the Higgs boson decay to tau lepton pairs is considered. The work described here continues to serve as a model for analysing CMS Higgs to tau leptons measurements.

Book excerpt: The searches for a Beyond Standard Model (BSM) heavy CP-odd Higgs boson A decaying to Zh in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDM), and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) neutral Higgs bosons H/A decaying to a tau pair are presented. The search for the heavy CP-odd Higgs boson, A, is conducted through the A -> Zh -> ll T[subscript]lep T[subscript]had decay channel using 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass of 8 TeV. The search for the neutral MSSM H/A decaying to a tau pair in the T[subscript]lep T[subscript]had b-veto final state is done using 3.2 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass of 13 TeV. The observed data agrees with the Standard Model background prediction, and upper limits are set on cross-section times branching ratio of neutral BSM Higgs bosons.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model predicts the existence of one neutral scalar Higgs boson, which is a remnant of the mechanism that breaks the SU(2)[sub L]xU(1)[sub Y] electroweak symmetry and generates masses for the heavy vector bosons and fermions. Many extensions to the Standard Model predict two or more Higgs doublets, resulting in a larger spectrum of Higgs bosons including a charged Higgs boson (H[sup [+-]]). For a light charged Higgs boson mass, the top decay into a charged Higgs boson and bottom quark might occur. This thesis presents results of a direct search for this top quark decay mode via the charged Higgs decay to a tau lepton and tau-neutrino, using the hadronic decays of the tau leptons. The search data consist of 100 pb[sup -1] of Run 1 data collected between 1992-1995 at the CDF detector, from p[anti p] collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV produced at Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator. A total of seven events are observed in two search channels with an expected background contribution of 7.4[+-]2.0 events coming from fake taus (5.4[+-]1.5), heavy vector boson decays with jets (1.9[+-]1.3) and dibosons(0.08[+-]0.06). Lacking evidence for a signal, we set limits on charged Higgs production at the 95% confidence level in the charged Higgs mass plane versus tan[beta](a parameter of the theory) for a top quark mass of 175 GeV/c[sup 2] and for top production cross sections ([sigma][sub t[anti t]]) of 5.0 and 7.5 pb, assuming the Type-II Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model. For large tan[beta], this analysis excludes a charged Higgs boson of mass below 147(158)GeV/c[sup 2] for [sigma][sub t[anti t]]=5.0(7.5)pb. Using the Standard Model measured top quark cross section from CDF, this limit increases to 168 GeV/c[sup 2] and we also exclude a branching fraction of top decays via this charged Higgs mode of greater than 43% for charged Higgs masses below 168 GeV/c[sup 2].
