Book excerpt: The Sparidae, commonly known as breams and porgies, is a family of fishes of the order Perciformes, and includes about 115 species of mainly marine coastal fish of high economic value, exploited and farmed for human consumption, as well as for recreational purposes. This landmark publication brings together a huge wealth of information on the biology and culture of gilthead sea bream and other Sparidae species. Commencing with an overview of the current status of aquaculture of Sparidae, the book continues with comprehensive coverage of the family’s phylogeny, evolution and taxonomy, stress and welfare issues, and reproduction and broodstock management. Further chapters include coverage of early development and metabolism, production systems, nutrition, quality, and health management. A final cutting-edge chapter looks at genomic-proteomic research in Sparidae and its application to genetic improvement. With contributions from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australasia and North America, carefully drawn together and edited by Professor M. Pavlidis and Dr C. C. Mylonas, themselves well known for their work in this area, Sparidae is an essential purchase for anyone working with this important family of fishes. Fish biologists, fish farmers, aquaculture researchers, and fisheries managers will all find much of great use and interest within this book’s covers. All universities and research establishments where biological sciences, aquaculture and fisheries science are studied and taught should have copies of this excellent book on their shelves.

Kapetsky and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this document is to illustrate the ways in which Geographical Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and mapping can play a role in the development and management of marine aquaculture. The perspective is global. The approach is to employ example applications that have been aimed at resolving many of the important issues in marine aquaculture. The underlying purpose is to stimulate the interest of individuals in the government, industry and educational sectors of marine aquaculture to make more effective use of these tools. A brief introduction to spatial tools and their use in the marine fisheries sector precedes the example applications. The most recent applications have been selected to be indicative of the state of the art, allowing readers to make their own assessments of the benefits and limitations of use of these tools in their own disciplines. Also published in Chinese and Spanish.

This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005 the CoastGIS symposium and exhibition was once again held in Aberdeen, Scotland, in the UK, the second time that we have had the privilege host this international event in the city of Aberdeen. This was the 6th International S- posium Computer Mapping and GIS for Coastal Zone Management, a collabo- tion between the International Cartographic Association’s (ICA) Commission on Marine Cartography, and the International Geographical Union’s (IGU) Comm- sion on Coastal Systems. The theme for 2005 was: De ning and Building a Marine and Coastal Spatial Data Infrastructure. As a major coastal event, the CoastGIS series of conferences always attracts an international audience of coastal researchers, managers, and pr- titioners who use one or more of the geospatial technologies (e. g. GIS, GPS, digital mapping, remote sensing, databases, and the Internet) in their work. The CoastGIS series is fundamentally an international event which over the years has gained a strong following attracting delegates from around the globe. Hosted by the University of Aberdeen – at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) – once again CoastGIS 2005 provided an opportunity to communicate the results of a wide range of innovative scienti c research into coastal and marine applications of the geospatial technologies, including remote sensing, Geograp- cal Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), databases, data models, the Internet and online mapping systems.

Book Synopsis Fish atlas of the Celtic Sea, North Sea, and Baltic Sea by : Henk J.L. Heessen
Download or read book Fish atlas of the Celtic Sea, North Sea, and Baltic Sea written by Henk J.L. Heessen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atlas presents a unique set of abundance data to describe the spatial, depth, size, and temporal distribution of demersal and pelagic fish species over an extensive marine area, together with accounts of their biology. A large number of pictures, graphs and distribution maps illustrate the text. By largely avoiding - or at least explaining - scientific terms and providing extensive references, the book should be useful for both laymen and scientists. The quantitative information on some 200 fish taxa is derived from 72,000 stations fished by research vessels during the period 1977-2013. The area covers the northwest European shelf from west of Ireland to the central Baltic Sea and from Brittany to the Shetlands. Although the surveys extend beyond the shelf edge, only taxa reported at least once in waters less than 200 m are included. Typical deep-water species and typical fresh-water species are excluded. We hope this publication will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the ocean ecosystems.

Book Synopsis Climate Development and History of the North Atlantic Realm by : Gerold Wefer
Download or read book Climate Development and History of the North Atlantic Realm written by Gerold Wefer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global environment is changing rapidly under the impact of human activities, and an important element of this change is related to global c1imate modification. Can the study of c1imate and history help in devising strategies for coping with this change? What might be the type of information most useful in this context? What are the pitfalls awaiting the unwary? These are the kinds of questions that led us to bring together experts from the natural and social sci ences with a strong interest in history, to promote discussion between workers in different disciplines by focussing on a common topic of great interest to society. The meeting was arranged in the framework of a "Hanse Conference" within the interdisciplinary program of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, a foundation set up to promote interdisciplinary studies in collaboration between the universities ofBremen and Oldenburg. The aim ofthe Hanse Conferences in general is to provide opportunities for experts from different fields of the sciences and humanities to come together and explore the larger framework oftopics of common interest. What unites the partici pants is their desire to look over the fence to neighboring disciplines. Young colleagues who wish to build an interdisciplinary career are particularly welcome. In the Hanse Conference on Climate and History, we have endeavoured to build bridges between the c1imate sciences and the sociological sciences concemed with environmental impacts on human activities. The geological sciences, we feIt, are especially well suited to the purpose because they al ready comprise historical aspects.
