Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a systematic account of the effects of globalization on the shipping industry and seafarers' lives. The seafarers' labor market is changing rapidly and this study discusses the challenges encountered in recruitment practices, trade unions, and collective bargaining, as well as training, certification, and fraudulent certification. Wages, contracts, and tours of duty are also investigated, and the book includes in-depth treatment of seafarer safety and hazard exposure. Innovations such as automated engine rooms and the global maritime distress and safety system, the internationalization of ship registrations, multinational crewing and reductions in crewing levels, and the rise in ship management companies have had a profound effect on seafarers' living and working conditions. This perceptive book examines these and future issues for regulation and enforcement.

This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book is of the seafarers, by the seafarers, for the seafarers Seafarers are the core of all maritime trade and their expectations/perspectives alone should be at the centre of all solutions for maritime skills. Taking this standpoint, the editor has explored the issues of maritime skills with critical gaps following a framework of research methodology. The issue of critical gaps in maritime skills is further exacerbated due to the impact on seafarers caused by changes in – the ecosystem, status & relationship with stakeholders, technology, focus on renewable energy, anxiety levels and so forth. Furthermore, stakeholders can no longer ignore the fact that seafarers are leaving a seagoing career after working for only a few years. Therefore, the editor has also explored the need to prepare seafarers for transition into maritime shore jobs to preserve their maritime skills within the maritime industry. This exhaustive book can be used as a guide for further revisions or a revamp of the current STCW Convention. The editor thereafter divided the researched critical gaps in maritime skills into four groups (Jain’s Model for Maritime Skills) – Panoptic, Social Intelligence, Upskilling & Reskilling for onboard vessels skills, and Portable Skills for future shore jobs. Panoptic and Social Skills are core skills required for both on board vessels as well for maritime shore jobs. Thereafter, the editor embarked on a voyage to discover, persuade, collaborate with a number of exceptionally experienced subject-matter experts over many months to collaboratively pursue many mini-research projects across all selected maritime skills, adopting specific methodology to plug these critical gaps. These experts were drawn – (1) from countries such as India, the Philippines, Romania, South Korea, Malaysia, UAE, the UK and Singapore, (2) from both genders, (3) from deck, engine & professionals settled ashore, (4) with current experience in the industry and/or at sea at a fundamental level, and (5) from seafaring-supplying nations, recognising/experiencing the relevant socio-economic circumstances of seafarers. From this book, seafarers will not only find ideas on how to plug gaps in their maritime skills, but also how they can transition with their existing skills to other maritime jobs, such as marine superintendents, marine managers, designated persons ashore, managers supervising new build/second-hand vessels, IT managers in the maritime domain, marine surveyors, marine experts/investigators, marine pilots in ports, maritime arbitrators, managers in shipyards and so forth. The solutions in this book will also resolve the issue of the shortage and retention of seafarers.

Book excerpt: This book is an ethnography that draws upon 25 years of qualitative research and shipboard fieldwork in the merchant cargo shipping sector. It explores the lives and work of seafarers and how these have changed over time. Change over time and the experience of time on board are organising themes throughout the text. They are contextualised with accounts of transformation in the regulation of the shipping industry and technological innovation. The book begins with a unique account of a voyage on a container ship. In this, the author details both the research process and the daily activities and shared thoughts of the seafarers who are on board. The narrative is further enhanced with illustrative examples taken from other voyages to illustrate continuities and change over time. The book will be of value to individuals, scholars, and researchers interested in ethnography of all kinds. Sociologists, anthropologists, maritime studies students, seafarers, ship operators and policy makers will find the text engaging and revealing. It provides a vivid account that will appeal to academics interested in the study of work, workplace change and time. It is accessibly written and will be enjoyed by readers interested in the contemporary shipping industry, and the life and work of seafarers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique and scholarly perspective on a little-studied subject: maritime crime and policing. The seas and oceans cover 70 percent of the earth’s surface and 90 percent of world trade by volume travels by sea. Furthermore, the refugee crisis has produced an inflow of people attempting to find a better life, particularly in Northwest Europe and the UK, which has had an impact on the maritime domains of European ports. While there has been attention paid to the role of maritime policing by scholars in maritime security studies, little attention has been paid by criminologists and policing studies scholars. This book aims to fill this gap. Bringing together a range of international scholars, this book covers a variety of topics pertinent to maritime crime and its policing, such as fraud, piracy and armed robbery at sea, illegal and unregulated fishing, smuggling, people trafficking, illegal immigration, illegal dumping and pollution, arms trafficking, terrorism, and cargo theft. It brings together new perspectives on several key criminological themes such as transnational organised crime, criminalisation, and securitisation and provides a bold new direction for the landlocked discipline of criminology and policing studies. An accessible and compelling read, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of criminology, policing, sociology, politics, migration studies, and all those interested in the policing of the sea.

It draws on archive materials, fieldwork in ports and on cargo ships, and interviews with chaplains in the UK and overseas. The volume presents a detailed picture of seafarers' attitudes to working in mixed faith crews, their understandings of their own faith and its role and negotiation in a life at sea, and their needs with regard to faith and more general welfare support. In addition, it describes the daily life and work of port chaplains, how they understand their roles in relation to their own faith, and how they manage their work in a multi-faith environment. In producing this rich account, the perspectives of relevant stakeholders and the historical underpinnings of port chaplaincy have also been considered, alongside the ways in which port chaplaincy compares with other forms of chaplaincy about which rather more has, hitherto, been known.

Book excerpt: During the COVID-19 pandemic, employees of maritime and logistics sectors have continued their activities both on shore and on board to complete operations and supply continuity of logistics management in hard times. While organizations worked to provide the best services to customers, the shipping industry suffered by the work-life changes brought by the pandemic. Changes have been felt in talent management in new shipping, changing maritime ethics and affecting the maritime industry psychology, employee motivation, importance of seafarers, and employee rights and responsibilities. The Handbook of Research on the Future of the Maritime Industry presents leaders and managers from maritime and logistics industries, sharing their experiences, new paradigms, practices, and strategies. This book provides practical ideas and strategies to cope with the consequences of the “new normal” in the wake of the global pandemic crisis. Covering topics such as employee rights, occupational safety, and psychological effects, this book is an essential resource for senior executives, leaders and managers, HR professionals, lecturers, business clusters, entrepreneurs, researchers, scholars, academicians, and faculty of higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyses maritime decarbonization from various perspectives. It contains unique approaches and tools in four areas: scenarios, value chains, enablers, and partnerships. Decarbonization has become a very important focus in the maritime industry. Anyone that delves into the topic quickly appreciates its breadth and complexity. Minimizing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in maritime practices at large and doing it swiftly is far from simple. The Paris 2015 climate goals and the IMO ambitions may be the industry’s guiding lights. But is this enough? Probably not. At the managerial level a paradigm shift is needed: from a fixed mindset that is calling for compensation to a growth mindset that seeks to capture the benefits of decarbonization. This will require a structured approach in the form of practical frameworks and clear recommendations. In this book 75 scholars and industry and subject matter experts have joined forces to explore different scenarios, value chain designs, decarbonization enablers, and partnership models to develop frameworks and recommendations around how to effectively work and make progress. The books offers a valuable mix of theory, practical tools, and real-life cases.
