Book excerpt: Unlike past conflicts, which were characterized by major naval battles in the open ocean, present day threats are mostly associated with rogue nations and terrorist cells. These threats may strike at unsuspected times and locations. The United States Navy may operate from a Sea Base that protects power ashore through the use of surface and air assets. These assets must transit from the Sea Base in the blue water through the littoral region to reach the objective area. Total ship system designs that include high-speed littoral combat ships (LCS) are required that are capable of operating in these regions and defending the Sea Base, the surface, and air assets from an asymmetric threat. With a modular design and the ability to carry multiple helicopters and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV), the SEA SWAT LCS concept can be quickly employed as a force multiplier capable of operating as an Air Warfare or Undersea/Mine Warfare mission platform. With the addition of the core and Surface Warfare sensors and weapons to one of these modular mission packages, the SEA SWAT LCS concept for sea base defense will ensure air, surface, and subsurface superiority during conflict. An advanced electrical power system in conjunction with an integrated propulsion system and zonal power distribution provides sustained combat capability against multiple asymmetric threats. Its enclosed super-structure allows for high survivability in a CBR environment. The paper covers the following topics: analysis of alternatives for ship number, combat systems, and hull design; the design process; propulsion and electrical systems, hydrostatics, combat systems, damage control, CBR systems, manning and habitability, and environmental concerns; signatures, cost, and weight analyses; and threats, including mines, torpedoes, submarines, small boats, unconventional vessels, cruise missiles, UAVs, SAMS, and unguided missiles. Extensive appendixes. (72 tables, 109 figures)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater Acoustic Modeling and Simulation, Fourth Edition continues to provide the most authoritative overview of currently available propagation, noise, reverberation, and sonar-performance models. This fourth edition of a bestseller discusses the fundamental processes involved in simulating the performance of underwater acoustic systems and emphasizes the importance of applying the proper modeling resources to simulate the behavior of sound in virtual ocean environments. New to the Fourth Edition Extensive new material that addresses recent advances in inverse techniques and marine-mammal protection Problem sets in each chapter Updated and expanded inventories of available models Designed for readers with an understanding of underwater acoustics but who are unfamiliar with the various aspects of modeling, the book includes sufficient mathematical derivations to demonstrate model formulations and provides guidelines for selecting and using the models. Examples of each type of model illustrate model formulations, model assumptions, and algorithm efficiency. Simulation case studies are also included to demonstrate practical applications. Providing a thorough source of information on modeling resources, this book examines the translation of our physical understanding of sound in the sea into mathematical models that simulate acoustic propagation, noise, and reverberation in the ocean. The text shows how these models are used to predict and diagnose the performance of complex sonar systems operating in the undersea environment.

Book excerpt: The conception of real-time control networks taking into account, as an integrating approach, both the specific aspects of information and knowledge processing and the dynamic and energetic particularities of physical processes and of communication networks is representing one of the newest scientific and technological challenges. The new paradigm of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) reflects this tendency and will certainly change the evolution of the technology, with major social and economic impact. This book presents significant results in the field of process control and advanced information and knowledge processing, with applications in the fields of robotics, biotechnology, environment, energy, transportation, et al.. It introduces intelligent control concepts and strategies as well as real-time implementation aspects for complex control approaches. One of the sections is dedicated to the complex problem of designing software systems for distributed information processing networks. Problems as complexity and specific instruments for modeling and control are also presented in a group of papers which identifies a large opening towards the new generation of CPS. The book is structured so as to ensure a good equilibrium between conceptual and applicative aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titan is practically a planet in its own right, with a diameter similar to that of Mercury, methane rainstorms, organic soot and ethane seas. All of the most detailed knowledge on the moon's geology, volcanology, meteorology, marine sciences and chemistry are gathered together here to paint a factually accurate hypothetical future of early human colonization on this strange world. The views from Titan’s Mayda Outpost are spectacular, but all is not well at the moon's remote science base. On the shore of a methane sea beneath glowering skies, atmospherics researcher Abigail Marco finds herself in the middle of murder, piracy and colleagues who seem to be seeing sea monsters and dead people from the past. On the Shores of Titan’s Farthest Sea provides thrills, excitement and mystery – couched in the latest science – on one of the Solar System’s most bizarre worlds, Saturn’s huge moon Titan. "This riveting story, set against a plausibly well integrated interplanetary space, carries us along with its bright and interesting characters. We feel absolutely transported to a hauntingly beautiful and alien Titan through Carroll's masterful weaving of art and science." – Jani Radebaugh, Professor of Planetary Sciences, Titan dune expert, BYU "It's a fun read! Really makes Titan come alive, literally..." – Astrophysicist and author Ralph Lorenz "Michael Carroll's new novel "On the Shores of Titan's Farthest Sea" (Springer) is a gripping, good-vs-evil tale that sparkles with imagination. It's set on the shores of Kraken Mare, the vast methane sea found high in the northern latitudes of Saturn's moon, Titan, in a future when humanity has spread throughout the solar system. The villains are wicked, the heroes are scientists (Thanks, Mike!), the story is convincing, the dialogue snappy, and the scenery is right out of our catalog of findings on this cold, hazy and alien world. If you fancy skipping forward 250 years and checking out how humankind might be navigating the very geography and landforms we have uncovered in our years touring Saturn, this book is for you!" --Carolyn Porco, leader of the Cassini Imaging Science team and the Director of the Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for Operations (CICLOPS) at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado

Book excerpt: Defending Freedom chronicles Ensign Tom Grahams journey of faith as he encounters various trials following his graduation from the Naval Academy and reporting to his first ship, the USS Russell, an Aegis destroyer based in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. And Paul, a naval aviator, shows Tom through his lifes example what it means to discover freedom from sin through a life centered on Jesus Christ. Two women enter Toms life and show him the true meaning of love: Elle, his girlfriend whom he meets during his initial training in Newport Rhode Island, and Terri, his best friend Pauls fiance. Written for his teenage sons by a retired Navy Commander and 88 graduate of the Naval Academy, author Robert Carlisles first novel takes you on a journey around the world following the events of 9/11. Defending Freedom sheds light on the hardships of life in the Navy during this difficult time in our nations history. But it also contains a message of hope to those suffering through lifes difficult circumstances and a treatise on why Christians should always be ready to defend the freedom found in Christ. Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2)
