Book excerpt: Seasonal, monthly, weekly, and hourly sea level variability at Monterey, California is described and the oceanic and atmospheric processes which cause these variations are examined. Monthly mean sea level anomalies at Monterey are significantly correlated with those observed at tide stations as distant as Prince Rupert, Canada and Callao, Peru, indicating that these anomalies are related to large scale rather than to strictly local atmospheric or oceanic changes. Multiple regression analysis indicates that monthly anomalies of atmospheric pressure, sea surface temperature, and meridional wind stress account for much of the observed monthly sea level variability. Sea level elevations at Monterey, when adjusted for the atmospheric pressure (barometric) effect, show a seasonal high in winter and a minimum in spring. These seasonal variations are in phase with those of nearby steric height observations. There is also good agreement between weekly mean sea level and steric height observations in a time-series sense. Because of the close agreement between sea level and steric height, and the high correlation of Monterey sea level with that at nearby tide stations, steric height and sea level variations both must be related to variations in the geostrophic current flow. Book excerpt: A method was devised by which short-term deviations from the astronomical tides at Monterey, California were detected and measured in the absence of the predicted tides at Monterey. This was accomplished by comparing the observed tides at Monterey with the predicted tides at San Francisco. The sealevel deviations, or anomalies, that can be found using this method range in duration from several hours to two or three days. The sea-level variations that were detected during a six-month period at Monterey had magnitudes ranging between +0.9 and -0.8 of a foot and durations ranging from 3.5 to 39.5 hours. The largest anomalies found are attributed to sea breezes that were unaccompanied by any appreciable atmospheric pressure variations. On the other hand, pressure changes accompanying frontal passages appear to be the dominant cause of other anomalies in spite of wind effects. Time lags in the response of sea level to weather phenomena were as long as three hours. (Author).

Book excerpt: Tide gauges show that global sea level has risen about 7 inches during the 20th century, and recent satellite data show that the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating. As Earth warms, sea levels are rising mainly because ocean water expands as it warms; and water from melting glaciers and ice sheets is flowing into the ocean. Sea-level rise poses enormous risks to the valuable infrastructure, development, and wetlands that line much of the 1,600 mile shoreline of California, Oregon, and Washington. As those states seek to incorporate projections of sea-level rise into coastal planning, they asked the National Research Council to make independent projections of sea-level rise along their coasts for the years 2030, 2050, and 2100, taking into account regional factors that affect sea level. Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present, and Future explains that sea level along the U.S. west coast is affected by a number of factors. These include: climate patterns such as the El Niño, effects from the melting of modern and ancient ice sheets, and geologic processes, such as plate tectonics. Regional projections for California, Oregon, and Washington show a sharp distinction at Cape Mendocino in northern California. South of that point, sea-level rise is expected to be very close to global projections. However, projections are lower north of Cape Mendocino because the land is being pushed upward as the ocean plate moves under the continental plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. However, an earthquake magnitude 8 or larger, which occurs in the region every few hundred to 1,000 years, would cause the land to drop and sea level to suddenly rise.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to study the temporal pattern of vertical land movements at selected Pacific Coast tide stations. The relative motion of the land at these stations is indicated by the relationship between monthly mean sea levels measured at pairs of stations. Examination of historical monthly mean sea level data by means of graphical and spectral analysis led to the use of an anomaly filter which adjusts for mean monthly differences. A cumulative analysis procedure of Wyss (1977) was adopted to the study of the relative movement of seven tide stations. Determination of the type of vertical movement between pairs of stations, the date of sudden movement, and the station responsible can be determined from analysis of the cumulative curve of monthly sea level difference. Results of the cumulative analysis show that tide stations, whether separated by short or long distances, experience frequent changes in relative elevation. Whether these are caused by land movements or changes in station datum, or both, is not known. (Author).
