Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Found in public spaces and parks, art galleries and university buildings, along riverbanks as well as in city squares, private gardens and even underwater, Canadian sculpture encompasses a range of materials and styles from traditional bone and bronze to postmodern multimedia installations. As this book demonstrates, artistic intentions among the nation's sculptors, whether political, social, theoretical or aesthetic, are as diverse as Canada itself. The distinguished cultural historian Maria Tippett begins this richly illustrated study of Canadian sculpture in 13,000 BCE by examining a handcrafted shard found in the Bluefish Caves of the Yukon and proceeds to consider Inuit and First Nations sculptural practices alongside those of Euro-Canadians. Dr. Tippett begins with traditional forms such as totem poles and liturgical carvings before moving along to the landmark EXPO 67 exhibition and other significant events, concluding with the postmodern artists who, with "a relentless striving for the new" work within new technological realms such as 3D modelling and virtual reality spaces. Dr. Tippett's survey evinces an avid interest in the logistics of sculpture, exploring the ways in which the medium demands more space, time, money and material to produce and exhibit than disciplines like drawing and painting. The result is that in Canadian sculpture, more than in other artistic practices, complex social, economic and cultural forces have interacted with the pure inspiration of artists in their studios. Sculpture in Canada is a groundbreaking work that will have a profound impact in introducing readers to the underappreciated wealth of this most public of Canadian arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably, public art is experienced daily by more people than most offerings in galleries, yet our notion of what constitutes public art is surprisingly limited. Public Art in Canada broadens the critical discussion by exploring public art's varied means of engaging with public space and the public sphere. Annie Gérin and James S. McLean have assembled contributions from new and established Canadian scholars, curators, and artists. Each contributor enlivens our understanding of public art as a practice and its place in the social and aesthetic formation of which it is a part. As a result, the book provides an overview of the current debates in the field of public art that are informed by the theories and critical literature of art history, communication studies, cultural studies, sociology, and urban studies. The rigorous essays and original works of art collected in this volume present a compelling demonstration of the strategies, aesthetic and otherwise, used by artists to elicit intellectual, sensual, or emotional responses that can only be obtained through artistic practices in public places. Public Art in Canada is a major contribution to the study of Canadian art and culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Painting and Sculpture in Canada For several decades in the early creation of Canadian art there were no native painters. There was no impulse to paint, no school in which to study, and few buyers when the work was done. Occasional wan dering painters arrived, pausing a while; others came and made Canada their home. Paul Kane, one of the first of these, was an Irishman whose father came to Toronto about 1818, and opened a wine shop. The youth travelled and studied art for four years in Europe, chiefly 1n Italy, returning in 1845. Interested in Indian life, due to his contact with the Mississaugas around Toronto in boyhood, Kane spent three years in the North and West of Canada, following the Indians and painting them in their lodges, hunting buffaloes with them, and living their primitive life generally The result was a large collection of pictures, often fantastic in drawing, but usually faithful in dramatic quality, and now of permanent value as records of aboriginal life. Many of these pictures are possessed by the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Few contemporary artists have worked in the sheer variety of styles that Joe Fafard has perfected -- and won such acclaim for their efforts. Born in 1942 in a remote farming hamlet in Saskatchewan, the idiosyncratic artist early on chose a radically different direction from the prevailing modernistic aesthetic of the early 1960s, boldly exploring new media and new imagery. Gaining fame initially as a ceramic sculptor of oversize animals and people, in the early 1980s he turned to laser-steel and bronze work, along the way adding painting to his repertoire. This dual biography and critical study features a wealth of illustrations from Fafard's long career, generously sampling both the monumental sculptures done as public and private commissions, and the more intimate studies of people and prairie that reside in museums worldwide and in the private collections of Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, and others.
