Book excerpt: When Mohamed Said Farsi became Mayor of Jeddah in 1972, at a pivotal moment in the Saudi Arabian city's history, he set himself the task of not only creating a modern city, but also to include in the concept a plan for public art. Works were commissioned from world famous artists in a variety of media, including bronze, steel, concrete, marble and stone. Other sculptures were made by artists of the region from historical artifacts and recycled scrap metal, some from cars and planes. This book allows the world a glimpse into a city not easily visited and shows Saudi Arabia as a place of vision and innovation in the arts. Jeddah has grown since 1972 and now, in 2013, some 24 major pieces are being restored and relocated by the Abdul Latif Jameel Foundation and the Municipality of Jeddah in a new Open Air Museum on the sea front, known as the Corniche. As well as telling the story of the restoration and relocation of the 24 sculptures, this book also examines the history of this transformative moment in Jeddah.

Book excerpt: "The ancient Kingdoms of South Arabia have been recognized as the cradle of civilization for the Arabian Peninsula and their contribution to the identity of Arabia cannot be underestimated. For the first time, this volume provides scholars and students a coherent synthesis of South Arabian art, from its origins, to its gradual development in a distinctive local art and, finally, to its decline with the advent of Islam. Each chapter provides a historical summary of the period, a review of representative art and a discussion of the distinctive character, stylistic and iconographic originality of South Arabian art, shaped by a creative interpretation of external influences."--P. 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Documenting the recent studies conducted on a highly original, beautiful, and long-neglected site by excavation teams, this exploration reveals the hidden treasures of a near-eastern civilization. More than 350 art masterpieces, mostly unknown to a foreign public and dating from prehistoric times to modern days, introduce the life and culture of a land of exchanges located at the crossroad of major civilizations--including the Mediterraneans, Mesopotamians, and Indians--which today constitutes Saudi Arabia. The numerous testimonies include the necropolis of Hegra, a smaller version of Petra inscribed on the UNESCO World heritage list; Mecqua, the fortress of Teima, which shows strong Mesopotamian and Egyptian influence; and the Dedan site, which is characterized by monumental sculpture of Ptolemaic inspiration. Precious dishes and jewelry, monumental sculptures, temples, and palaces ornate with frescoes fill the pages of this sumptuous examination.

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of Saudi Arabia through my artists perspective. I am a doctor-turned-artist with a mission to confront with my traditional context, to explore Islamic culture in an era of globalization and to uncover the unofficial histories that have shaped the present. Mapping my journey between Abha, Jeddah, Mecca and Riyadh, this book is both a mid-career survey of my work and a prognosis of the changes forged by and in the Kingdom, and its significance in world religion, culture and geopolitics. From the year of my birth in 1979, when Islamic revolution reconfigured the region, my training as a community doctor on the Saudi/Yemeni border, my rise as the Gulf's most radical young artist, to my insider's role influencing national cultural policy, Prognosis is the story of my artistic journey into my society. In five chapters, Theocracy, Kingdom, Petrocultures, Cities and Mirage, the book incorporates photography, calligraphy, painting, installation and video, to reveal the complexities of Saudi Arabia in the context of wider global narratives. Beyond simple documentation, mine is an art of anthropology, politics, science and activism, tracing and recording the often-neglected histories that inform and structure contemporary life in Saudi Arabia. It is also an urgent prognosis of a society in dramatic transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia evokes images of deserts, camels, and oil, along with rich sheikh in white robes, oppressed women in black veils, and terrorists. But when Loring Danforth traveled through the country in 2012, he found a world much more complex and inspiring than he could have ever imagined. With vivid descriptions and moving personal narratives, Danforth takes us across the Kingdom, from the headquarters of Saudi Aramco, the country’s national oil company on the Persian Gulf, to the centuries-old city of Jeddah on the Red Sea coast with its population of undocumented immigrants from all over the Muslim world. He presents detailed portraits of a young woman jailed for protesting the ban on women driving, a Sufi scholar encouraging Muslims and Christians to struggle together with love to know God, and an artist citing the Quran and using metal gears and chains to celebrate the diversity of the pilgrims who come to Mecca. Crossing the Kingdom paints a lucid portrait of contemporary Saudi culture and the lives of individuals, who like us all grapple with modernity at the dawn of the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: This catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition “Roads of Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia”, presents a historical journey through the trade routes, incense roads and pilgrimage paths of the Arabian Gulf. Following the major themes of the exhibition and highlighting its masterpieces, the book introduces a variety of cultures that inhabited these lands through their statues, funerary monuments, grave goods and daily use objects. Beginning with artifacts from the earliest human settlements to prehistoric times, continuing through to the dawn of Islam and precious religious objects and finally exploring the Middle Ages and the modern period with maps and photographs, the catalogue illustrates the essential connections and networks that the Gulf has always maintained with surrounding regions and civilizations.
