Book Synopsis The Sculpture of Francis Derwent Wood by : Matthew Withey
Download or read book The Sculpture of Francis Derwent Wood written by Matthew Withey and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final volume in the British Sculptors and Sculpture series addresses the work of the important but neglected British sculptor Francis Derwent Wood RA (1871-1926). A student of Edouard Lanteri at the Royal College of Art, Derwent Wood's early artistic career was distinguished. His reputation grew rapidly and a period as Director of Modelling at the Glasgow School of Art saw him working on public commissions with many of the city's most important architects. Simultaneously, he built his London practice, perfecting the art of the rapidly executed, observationally astute portrait bust, and becoming a well-connected member of the Chelsea set. He exhibited at the Royal Academy every year from 1895 until his death in 1926, becoming a full Academician in 1920. During the First World War he carried out pioneering work in the field of facial prosthetics. He was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art in 1918, where Henry Moore was amongst his many pupils. Derwent Wood's Machine Gun Corps memorial at Hyde Park Corner in London, completed in the year of his death, is amongst the best-known and most consistently reviled sculptures in Britain. Matthew Withey offers readers a subtle and layered interpretation of the career that led up to this iconic and misunderstood work, together with a comprehensive catalogue of Derwent Wood's diverse body of work.

Book excerpt: Master Wood Sculptor, Bill Heynen, shares five decades of sculpturing "Dynamic Creations" from exotic and domestic woods primarily using hand tools in this richly illustrated collection of more than 240 colored photographs which have never before been published. His innovative style ranges from intimate smaller pieces in Avocado Wood to tremendous Walnut Wood Burl sculptures. This unique visual portfolio reveals one-of-a-kind sculptures in eight chapters: Animal Sculptures (41), Human Sculptures (22), Relief Carvings (35), Freeform Sculptures (19), and Functional Sculptures (14), including mirrors, tables, serving bowls, trans and cradles. The works of art exhibit a range from representational to abstract, artful realism to simplified minimalism. Photos of the artist at work accompany selected sculptures during the various step-by-step phases from design to finishing. The "process" chapter uses clarifying text and descriptive photos to answer questions commonly asked about working with wood to create works of art from wood selection, design, wood storage, dry vs.wet wood, wood working equipment, carving tools and sharpening techniques, to fixing wood cracks, sanding, finishing, and displaying. This illustrated volume is a fine reference for Wood Sculptors, Artists, Wood Carvers, and Wood Workers; it will appeal and be valued by Art Teachers, Sculptors, and Students. Book Synopsis Polychrome Sculpture by : Johannes Taubert
Download or read book Polychrome Sculpture written by Johannes Taubert and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades since its initial publication in German in 1978, Polychrome Sculpture has come to be widely regarded as a watershed text on the making and meaning of European medieval and Baroque painted wood sculpture. An early proponent of interdisciplinary research, Johannes Taubert played a pioneering role in combining the rigorous scientific analysis of materials with a fuller understanding of form and function, an approach that has led to the development of technical art history as practiced today. Many of the essays in this volume apply such scientific techniques as microscopic analysis to an art-historical understanding of Romanesque and late Gothic wood sculpture, revealing that, far from serving a merely decorative function, the painted surface of these works was intricately connected to their meaning. The paint layers on the sculptures, for example, which the author spent years documenting through close examination and analysis, were intended to impart a heightened sense of reality to the life-sized sculptures, thereby enhancing the viewer’s experience of worship. Taubert believed it was crucial for conservators to understand this context before undertaking any treatments. No other book offers such a focused, subtle, and interdisciplinary examination of the subject as Polychrome Sculpture. This influential work is now available in English for the first time, in a meticulous translation enhanced and updated by new color illustrations, annotations to the original text, and a new introduction.
