Book excerpt: “The first book to tell the story of the enterprisers who have personal followings . . . a missing link in the chain of American religious movements.”—Martin E. Marty, author of October 31, 1517: Martin Luther and the Day that Changed the World Written by a Professor Emeritus at Auburn University, this is the first objective history of the great revivals that swept the country after World War II. It tells the story of the victories and defeats of such giants of the revival as William Branham, Oral Roberts, Jack Coe, T. L. Osborn, and A. A. Allen. It also tells of the powerful evangelists who carried on the revival, including Robert Schambach and Morris Cerullo. Those who lived through the great revivals of the 1950s and 1960s will be thrilled to read about those exciting days, and those interested in the religious history of the United States need to read this book to see what has led us up to this present moment in time. “Harrell has obviously attended countless rallies, read sheafs of literature, and personally interviewed many of the principals. He . . . tell[s] the story in a largely biographical format. This makes for lively reading.”—The New York Times Book Review “A book about healing revivalists that takes them seriously and treats them fairly.”—Journal of Southern History “Will be a definitive work for some years to come.”—Reviews in American History “Will attract readers interested in the reasons behind the various fat and lean periods among revivalists.”—Publishers Weekly “Harrell’s book will doubtless be the definitive work on the subject for a long while—who else will wade through Healing Waters and Miracle Magazine with such fastidious care?”—Kirkus Reviews

Book Synopsis The Insanity of Obedience by : Nik Ripken
Download or read book The Insanity of Obedience written by Nik Ripken and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wise Sheep Among the Wolves All Christian disciples have one thing in common: as they carry the gospel across the ocean and across the street, persecution will become the norm for those who choose to follow Jesus. How believers respond in the face of persecution reveals everything about their level of faith and obedience. The Insanity of Obedience is a bold challenge to global discipleship. Nik Ripken exposes the danger of safe Christianity and calls readers to something greater. The Insanity of Obedience challenges Christians in the same, provocative way that Jesus did. This book dares you—and prepares you—to cross the street and the oceans with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Some of Jesus’ instructions sound uncomfortable and are potentially dangerous. We may be initially encouraged by His declaration, “I am sending you out.” But how are we to respond when He then tells us that He is sending us out “like sheep among wolves"? In light of the words of Jesus, how can modern day believers rest comfortably in the status quo? How can we embrace casual faith in light of the radical commands of Jesus which are anything but casual? Ripken brings decades of ministry experience in some of the most persecuted areas of the world to bear on our understanding of faith in Jesus. The Insanity of Obedience is a call to roll up your sleeves . . . and to follow and partner with Jesus in the toughest places on this planet. "We have the high privilege of answering Jesus’ call to go," Ripken says. "But let us be clear about this: we go on His terms, not ours. If we go at all, we go as sheep among wolves." Jesus gives us Himself. And He gives us the tools necessary for those who dare to journey with Him.
Book Synopsis The Magdalene Scrolls by : Barbara Wood
Download or read book The Magdalene Scrolls written by Barbara Wood and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barbara Wood's 1978 debut novel is now back in print in a new edition from Turner Publishing. When the first of the Magdalene Scrolls arrives, Professor Ben Messer is puzzled, intrigued, excited. What scholar of ancient languages wouldn’t be, when he held in his hands something even more astonishing than the Dead Sea Scrolls—a scroll just discovered to contain the life story and last confession of a man who had lived in Jerusalem just after the death of Christ. By the time the second scroll arrives, Ben’s interest has begun to be more than professional. For it seems that David, the writer of the ancient scrolls, is in many ways very much like Ben—and he seems to be speaking directly to Ben, across nearly 2,000 years of history. Before long, the terrifying transformation has begun, and there can be no turning back. What do the words of a Jew who lived 2,000 years ago have to do with today, and with Ben Messer, a man who had forsaken his Jewish identity years ago—or thought he had. And why does David’s life suddenly seem so much more real—and powerful—than Ben’s own? Why does Ben suddenly shut himself off from the beautiful woman he intends to marry and become involved with Judy Golden, a very different kind of woman? And what will happen if Ben surrenders completely to the power of the scrolls? Before long, the terrifying transformation has begun, and there can be no turning back . . .

Book Synopsis On the Road: The Original Scroll by : Jack Kerouac
Download or read book On the Road: The Original Scroll written by Jack Kerouac and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-08-16 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary 1951 scroll draft of On the Road, published word for word as Kerouac originally composed it Though Jack Kerouac began thinking about the novel that was to become On the Road as early as 1947, it was not until three weeks in April 1951, in an apartment on West Twentieth Street in Manhattan, that he wrote the first full draft that was satisfactory to him. Typed out as one long, single-spaced paragraph on eight long sheets of tracing paper that he later taped together to form a 120 foot scroll, this document is among the most significant, celebrated, and provocative artifacts in contemporary American literary history. It represents the first full expression of Kerouac’s revolutionary aesthetic, the identifiable point at which his thematic vision and narrative voice came together in a sustained burst of creative energy. It was also part of a wider vital experimentation in the American literary, musical, and visual arts in the post-World War II period. It was not until more than six years later, and several new drafts, that Viking published, in 1957, the novel known to us today. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of On the Road, Viking will publish the 1951 scroll in a standard book format. The differences between the two versions are principally ones of significant detail and altered emphasis. The scroll is slightly longer and has a heightened linguistic virtuosity and a more sexually frenetic tone. It also uses the real names of Kerouac’s friends instead of the fictional names he later invented for them. The transcription of the scroll was done by Howard Cunnell who, along with Joshua Kupetz, George Mouratidis, and Penny Vlagopoulos, provides a critical introduction that explains the fascinating compositional and publication history of On the Road and anchors the text in its historical, political, and social context.

Book Synopsis The Scrolls of Apollonia by : Atlas Porter
Download or read book The Scrolls of Apollonia written by Atlas Porter and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-10-18 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scrolls of Apollonia transform history into the stuff of legend, and legend into the stuff of prophecy. --W. A. Roberts Time Is the Real Monster When it was first reported that a team of archaeologists had discovered cursed scrolls written in a time before history, most scholars were skeptical, to say the least. The story is that a shepherd, who, while praying in a cave near the southern coast of Mygdonia, found a bronze basket with seven large scrolls in it. Not knowing what to make of his discovery, he brought the basket to his pastor in Thessalonica. Shortly thereafter, both men ended up dead. This was the first sign that there was something in this alluring basket of words that was not supposed to get out. The first scroll of Apollonia tells the story of how a civil war became a world war and how a world war destroyed a magical land of immense art and wealth, where fairy-tale lives were the norm and dreams were a reality. The world was divided between the gods Apollo and Artemis, who represented the Sun and Moon respectively. When Dominique La Celeste, the daughter of the Fletcher of Dantea, fell in love with her "enemy," Rexel Lightborn, the son of the Bowmaster of Apollonia, the end of Time itself was set into motion. Theirs is a timeless story of tragedy and betrayal that can only be described as monstrous. Because of the calamities presented in these scrolls and the subsequent tragedies that have occurred since their rediscovery, some audacious scholars continue to make the claim that these scrolls are cursed, and that reading them could put one's life in peril. Obviously, claims such as these cannot be substantiated. Nevertheless, here is a warning: if you do choose to read these scrolls, please do so very carefully.

Book Synopsis My Rhyming Poetry Scroll by : Eden W. E. Thrower
Download or read book My Rhyming Poetry Scroll written by Eden W. E. Thrower and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-17 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Rhyming Poetry Scroll, from start to finish as it does unroll, shows my poems in their variety, all in order chronologically, from when I was age twenty-seven to about sixty, from days of mental stability through bipolarism (manic-depression) back to mental stability. I hope on you it makes a good impression. My poems run from being serious to being lighthearted and humorous. They reveal most of my thinking through years of experience and reading. I've written about what's bad or quite great, things important to my heart, soul and mind (pate). I write about rhyme and its absence from today's verse, and write about bad psychiatrists who could not be worse. Some poems are couplets, one's an hour long, but all are in rhyme, and some approach song. My scroll shows my development, from where I was to where I went, my life's sweetness and bitterness, my strength and feebleness, my simplicity and complexity, my criticism and whimsy, my sarcasm and sympathy, my opinion and philosophy, my love and my hate, culminating in what I have written of late. In my scroll you will find my joy, sadness, thankfulness, ire, and as I write here now, I hope you like my work, entire.
