Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author argues that the bureaucratization of schooling has interfered with the process of education. The costs, complexity, and rigidity of the educational edifice leaves it unresponsive to parental concerns and reluctant to measure its own inadequacies such as illiteracy and high dropout rates among students. The author identifies two conceptual bases for action to address this problem: public choice theory and agency theory, discusses the issue of identity in its relation to education, and then makes the case for charter schools in Canada, stressing definitions of community, parental rights, and the need to combat bureaucratic tendencies. Two discussants respond to the author's analysis, one amplifying his call for charter schools and the other arguing that the basis for demanding reform is less clear than the author claims.

Book excerpt: Education reform has become part of a political imperative in a number of developed countries around the world. The simultaneous movement to reform schooling and the administrative structures which deliver educational services therefore needs to be studied in order to lay bare its fundamental assumptions. This movement has been labelled "restructuring" and "reform", although the words carry different meanings in different countries.; The authors question why this reconstruction occurred at the same time in different places. What common themes are emerging in the restructuring movement? And in the 1990s, where will the movement lead schooling and what essential changes will it effect? They explore these questions by examining developments in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Book excerpt: Early in this century, most empirically oriented psychologists believed that all motivation was based in the physiology of a set of non-nervous system tissue needs. The theories of that era reflected this belief and used it in an attempt to explain an increasing number of phenomena. It was not until the 1950s that it became irrefutably clear that much of human motivation is based not in these drives, but rather in a set of innate psychological needs. Their physiological basis is less understood; and as concepts, these needs lend themselves more easily to psycho logical than to physiological theorizing. The convergence of evidence from a variety of scholarly efforts suggests that there are three such needs: self-determination, competence, and interpersonal relatedness. This book is primarily about self-determination and competence (with particular emphasis on the former), and about the processes and structures that relate to these needs. The need for interpersonal relat edness, while no less important, remains to be explored, and the findings from those explorations will need to be integrated with the present theory to develop a broad, organismic theory of human motivation. Thus far, we have articulated self-determination theory, which is offered as a working theory-a theory in the making. To stimulate the research that will allow it to evolve further, we have stated self-determination theory in the form of minitheories that relate to more circumscribed domains, and we have developed paradigms for testing predictions from the various minitheories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this work critically analyses the competing claims about alternative arrangements for schooling. It does so in light of major popularly understood agendas for social and political purpose, and of the troubled and much less clearly understood assumptions and issues behind them. The book examines closely four generic types of arrangements for schooling in light of a comprehensive framework for understanding the publicness or privateness of schools, and the relationships between social and educational purpose. The book poses key questions about the meaning and purpose of schooling in the rapidly evolving social, demographic and technological realities of the time. It also probes fundamental assumptions, values and beliefs behind educational and public policy-making. In doing so, it offers a way to make sense of unorthodox arrangements for the provision and funding of schools.

Book excerpt: In The Sociology of Education in Canada Professor Terry Wotherspoon traces the historical development and organization of Canadian education, and describes sociological theories and analysis of education. Using a critical perspective, the author examines schooling and its impact on children and youth in Canada; the roles of teachers and teaching, and how these have and have not changed over the years; the relationship between education and employment; how education succeeds - and fails - in its task of social reproduction; and contemporary challenges and proposed reforms in provinces across Canada, where a secular multicultural society has created new demands on an institution formed in an earlier, more homogeneous Canada.
