However, this synergy is hard to develop because the techniques required to be a successful researcher are so different from the skills required to be an outstanding physician. Harold R. Roberts, M.D., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is an example of a physician-researcher who has benefited from having his feet in both the world of patient care and the world of the laboratory: he has let clinical problems direct his basic research effort and conversely has adopted research advances in his care of patients. Dr. Roberts's long and continuing career has included many research and clinical advances. He was part of the first group to determine the amino acid sequence of the important thrombin inhibitor hirudin and part of the group that prepared the first cryoprecipitates which were the first alternative to plasma as therapy in hemophilia A. Dr. Roberts has made significant advances in understanding the protein chemistry behind hemophilia B; he was among the first researchers to identify some patients as not being completely deficient but instead as having measurable levels of protein and subsequently demonstrated that this protein was dysfunctional. But how and when did such issues come to be established and accepted sources of knowledge about the body in medical culture? How are the specialized techniques and codes of these imaging techniques determined, and whose bodies are studied, diagnosed and treated with the help of optical recording devices? "Screening the Body" traces the unusual history of scientific film during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, presenting material that is at once disturbing and engrossing. Lisa Cartwright looks at films like "The Elephant Electrocution". She brings to light eccentric figures in the history of the science film such as William P. Spratling who used Biograph equipment and crews to film epileptic seizures, and Thomas Edison's lab assistants who performed x-ray experiments on their own bodies. Drawing on feminist film theory, cultural studies, the history of film, and the writings of Foucault, Lisa Cartwright illustrates how this scientific cinema was a part of a broader tendency in society toward the technological surveillance, management, and physical transformation of the individual body and the social body. She frequently points out the similarities of scientific film to works of avant-garde cinema, revealing historical ties among the science film, popular media culture and elite modernist art and film practices. Ultimately, Cartwright unveils an area of film culture that has rarely been discussed, but which will leave readers scouring video libraries in search of the films she describes.

This was the Academy’s ninth meeting devoted to glaucoma and consisted of formal lectures, round table discussions, and workshop presentations. The New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology maintains a strong tradition of providing the ophthalmologist with a venue for learning from exceptional mentors and innovative leaders. Inspection of the list of Academy meetings pertaining to glaucoma will highlight the fact that we have been privileged to have outstanding contributors and notable repeat performers (Appendix 1). The first symposium of this Academy was held in 1952 and, with its focus on glaucoma, the contributors were Sir Stewart Duke-Elder, Paul A. Chandler, MD, and Peter C. Kronfeld, MD. The first three lectures from that 1952 meeting were presented by Sir Stewart Duke-Elder and are published for the first time, from a copy of the original transcript, in this collection of papers. I think you will find his discussion of ‘simple’ and ‘congestive’ glaucoma enlightening and instructive. The Program Committee chairpersons, Claude F. Burgoyne, MD and Katherine Loftfield, MD, were instrumental in putting together a strong assembly of contributors and a well-balanced meeting. Special acknowledgment for their hard work in organizing this symposium goes to committee members Rameish Ayyala, MD, Annemarie Etienne, MD, Kenneth Haik, MD, Jill B. Koury, MD, and Daniel A. Long, MD, and to executive secretaries, Emily Busby and Amber Howell. Book excerpt: A historical and theoretical investigation of the unexpected ways screen-based media protect and excite viewers’ fears and anxieties of the world In this brilliant contribution to contemporary media studies, acclaimed theorist Francesco Casetti advances a provocative hypothesis: instead of being prostheses that expand or extend our perceptions, modern screen-based media are in fact apparatuses that shelter and protect us from exposure to the world. Rather than bringing us closer to external reality, dominant forms of visual media function as barriers or enclosures that defend against the apparent threats and dangers that seem increasingly to surround us. Working with an original historical overview that begins with the Phantasmagoria of the late eighteenth century, then the shared interior spaces of the movie theater in the early to mid-twentieth century, and finally the solitary digital milieus of the present, Casetti traces the outlines of the protective “bubbles” that disconnect us from our immediate surroundings. To be provided with a shield of immunity to the hazards and uncertainties of the world while experiencing them at a safe remove might seem a positive development.
