Book excerpt: Forget everything you thought you knew about politics. This is Minnesota. Step into the wacky world of Minnesota politics, as magazine editor Dashmagne Grant moves from reluctant hero to star of The Tonight Show, and then on to gubernatorial candidate and national celebrity. Along the way, he falls in love twice-only to lose both women-as fate hurtles him from Minnesota to Dallas, with stops in Hollywood and the Florida Keys. All of this wouldn't be so bad if not for the moderately insane people who surround Dash. There's the clueless Minnesota governor with three last names and a political platform based on Mass Confusion. A shady best friend with a talent for picking up radio signals by grinding his teeth. And then there's the sexy super model who adores him, and an eccentric Texas billionaire who wants to make him famous. Is it any wonder Grant's normally serene life has come to a screeching halt?

Book excerpt: Eggs of all animals contain mRNAs and proteins that are supplied to or deposited in the egg as it develops during oogenesis. These maternal gene products regulate all aspects of oocyte development, and an embryo fully relies on these maternal gene products for all aspects of its early development, including fertilization, transitions between meiotic and mitotic cell cycles, and activation of its own genome. Given the diverse processes required to produce a developmentally competent egg and embryo, it is not surprising that maternal gene products are not only essential for normal embryonic development but also for fertility. This review provides an overview of fundamental aspects of oocyte and early embryonic development and the interference and genetic approaches that have provided access to maternally regulated aspects of vertebrate development. Some of the pathways and molecules highlighted in this review, in particular, Bmps, Wnts, small GTPases, cytoskeletal components, and cell cycle regulators, are well known and are essential regulators of multiple aspects of animal development, including oogenesis, early embryogenesis, organogenesis, and reproductive fitness of the adult animal. Specific examples of developmental processes under maternal control and the essential proteins will be explored in each chapter, and where known conserved aspects or divergent roles for these maternal regulators of early vertebrate development will be discussed throughout this review. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melanie Gibson was an independent woman with a good job, multiple college degrees, and a condo in the trendy part of town. She also had a few mental illnesses, a minor substance abuse problem, and rotten relationship skills. She was a high-functioning crazy who needed a good kick in the pants, literally and metaphorically. In early 2013, as a last desperate means to save her sanity, Melanie turned to a nearly forgotten childhood activity: the Korean martial art of taekwondo. As if the universe were listening, she discovered her West Texas childhood taekwondo instructors’ Grandmaster operated a taekwondo school a few miles from her home in Fort Worth, Texas—and she decided to start her training over as a white belt. In taekwondo, Melanie felt like she had a fresh start in more ways than one. She found an inner peace she’d never known before, a sense of community, a newfound confidence, and a positive outlook on life. The kicking and screaming she was doing in class quieted the long-term kicking and screaming in her mind. Funny and frank, Kicking and Screaming: A Memoir of Madness and Marital Arts is the story of Melanie’s life-changing journey from troubled, lost soul to confident taekwondo black belt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A member of the 101st Airborne’s Glider Infantry recalls WWII, from the horror of D-Day to the despair of Nazi captivity, in this compelling memoir. As World War II broke out, Robert Bowen was drafted into Company C, 401st Glider Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. Soon afterwards, he found himself storming Utah Beach amid the chaos of D-Day, through unfamiliar terrain littered with minefields and hidden snipers. Bowen was wounded during the Normandy campaign but went on to fight in Holland and the Ardennes, where he was captured. That’s when his “trip through hell” truly began. In each of Bowen’s campaigns, the 101st “Screaming Eagles” spearheaded the Allied effort against the Nazi occupation of Europe. At Bastogne, they stood nearly alone against the onslaught of enemy panzers and grenadiers. His insights into life behind enemy lines after his capture provide as much fascination as his exploits on the battlefield. Written shortly after the war, Bowen’s narrative is immediate and compelling. An introduction by the world’s foremost historian of the 101st Airborne, George Koskimaki, further enhances this classic work.

Book excerpt: When we whisper a prayer here on earth, God resounds with the answer from Heaven in the form of the thundering voice of our heavenly Father. I know that heaven resounds with the voice of God when we talk to Him in prayer. He waits for us to understand the power of our words. And then He can begin to operate within the spiritual realm to bring about the answers to the prayers that are whispered to Him. God is always ready and able to intercede when we take the time to tell Him about our situation and the situations of others. Have you heard The Thundering Whisper? Prayer is the most powerful tool we have. But like any tool, it must be used properly to get the desired results. Do you forget to pray on a daily basis? Are your prayers self-serving and full of material wants? Is prayer a rushed chore for you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then join Reverend Gary Hamer in The Thundering Whisper as he shows us how to properly use prayer. By praying correctly, we speak directly to God and share our innermost thoughts with Him. We can fully understand God's intent just by praying to Him the right way! Reverend Hamer will guide you on how to appropriately pray and thus to a better understanding of prayer, yourself, and God in The Thundering Whisper.

Book excerpt: A deep dive into Joe Biden’s history and the origins of his political values Yesterday’s Man exposes the forgotten history of Joe Biden, one of the United States’s longest-serving politicians, and one of its least scrutinized. Over nearly fifty years in politics, the man called “Middle-Class Joe” served as a key architect of the Democratic Party’s rightward turn, ushering in the end of the liberal New Deal order and enabling the political takeover of the radical right. Far from being a liberal stalwart, Biden often outdid even Reagan, Gingrich, and Bush, assisting the right-wing war against the working class, and ultimately paving the way for Trump. The most comprehensive political biography of someone who has tried for decades to be president, Yesterday’s Man is an essential read for anyone interested in knowing the real Joe Biden and what he might do in office.
