Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope of School Geography Collaboration may have its dangers; but it affords opportunity, of which we have availed ourselves fully, for criticism and argument. Perhaps collaborators feel more free to press their own views than he who merely confers the favour of reading an author's proof. And we may also admit that the subject of the book offers openings for alternative opinions, although we have succeeded in reconciling our own. For geography is a big subject, so big that no man may ever know the whole of it; and we are concerned here not to lay down the boundaries of the whole of it, but only those of an inner circle, to wit, its application to secondary school teaching. Even though our task goes no farther than that, it is necessary to endeavour to fulfil diverse objects. We have, as we take it, firstly to give some indication of the scope of a geography course which seeks to prepare the pupil merely for safe passage through the school certificate examination, and is severely limited in time to two periods per week. But secondly, we are now emboldened to believe that the school certificate is not the be-all and end-all of geography-teaching in secondary schools. Geography has become, or is rapidly becoming, a well-established university subject. But as soon as the school certificate stage is passed, if not even before, geography announces itself as an elastic subject - one in which the course of study may be deliberately led in this direction or that, whether the physical, or the mathematical, or the economic, or the historical elements be chosen. While it presents geographic theory, as whole and for each of its parts, the chief emphasis is on concrete analysis and example rather than on abstraction, an approach which has proven more successful for undergraduate courses than those with a more heavily theoretical bias. The text was extensively re-written for the third edition, which enhanced its clarity and effectiveness, with expanded cartographic coverage.

Book excerpt: "Is geography one, or is it several subjects? More precisely, are physical and political geography two stages of one investigation, or are they separate subjects to be studied by different methods, the one an appendix of geology, the other of history? " --Halford Mackinder in The Scope and Methods of Geography, 1887 The Scope and Methods of Geography was published by Halford Mackinder in 1887 in the "New Monthly Series of the Royal Geographical Society." It was a manifesto for the New Geography, in which he viewed physical geography and human geography as a single discipline. This publication represented the beginning of an illustrious career as an English geographer and academic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear overview of current thinking on the teaching and learning of geography. It is an ideal companion to all students beginning a career in teaching the subject in secondary schools. The chapters are written by experienced teacher educators and bridge both theory and practice. The writers focus on the continuities, whilst setting them in the context of the changing curriculum. The book is divided into four parts. Part One examines the historical context of geography teaching. Part Two looks at issues of course planning, design, syllabuses and programmes of study. Underlying this section is the assumption that geography should not be considered in isolation from other subjects, but rather as part of a whole curriculum. Part Three concentrates on teaching and learning, and includes chapters on the use of maps, field work, IT and first hand experience within a community. The final section covers the issues associated with assessment, across the whole school age range.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses new pedagogies focusing on the use of geospatial technologies and geomedia in the classroom. Today, geospatial technologies are substantially influencing geography teaching and learning, particularly in secondary education. Web-GIS, virtual globes, storytelling, maps and apps for mobile devices are transforming the nature and design of geography curricula, instructional processes, didactics, resources and assessments. Undoubtedly, geography is among those school subjects that have benefited most from the implementation of new technologies in the classroom. Geospatial technologies can be used to develop inquiry-based learning or project-based learning pedagogies and help students to acquire spatial reasoning and spatial citizenship skills in the context of education for sustainable development. This book highlights a range of initiatives, projects and educational practices – from several European countries and settings – related to geospatial challenges in geography education. Given its scope, it will be equally appealing to scientists, students and teachers of geography and other fields using geospatial technologies and geomedia.
